With the tubes removed she softly kissed him on the lips for the last time.  "I love you," she whispered softly, totally aware of the whirring, beeping, and clicking of the machines in the background.  One last tear rolled down her cheek as she held his hand and nodded to the doctor.  Expecting nor feeling any response, she gently held his hand until she no longer felt life there.  Her life shared with him now over, she stated, "You are free now darling."  Then Mr. Robert Lovesmith's widow slowly rose and left the room. © 1997-1998 Elaine Dantzler
