Sonata [piano reduction] The Sonata for Bass Trombone is one of the most popular works for this instrument*, written and first performed in 1962 at the Eastman School of Music. It is a tonal work set in three movements, "Allegro Non Troppo", "Andantino", and "Vivace". The outside movements display the versatility of the bass trombone with their use of technique and range, while remaining melodic. The middle (slow) movement displays the instrument's lyrical qualities. This work has been recorded by Jeff Reynolds, bass trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, on Crystal Records. *A recent survey published in the Winter 1999 ITA Journal shows that the McCarty Sonata was the second most popular bass trombone solo performed, based on an analysis of faculty & student recital programs published since 1971. The first movement was performed on National Public Radio's program "From The Top" by then 17 year old Louis Bremer. Click Here to hear Mr. Bremer's performance.

Maurerische Trauermusik, K.477 (Thurlow) Translates to "Masonic Funeral Music." Written in 1785, about the same time as Marriage of Figaro, for the commemoration of two important Masons. This setting retains the solemn march feel of the original orchestration. Since Mozart always used the horn in his Masonic music, this setting features the horn in a melismatic part, with the trumpets playing the cantus firmus.

Crimson Collop, The [bass trombone duet] Crafted in classic Tommy Pederson style, Crimson Collop* takes full advantage of the professional bass trombonist's range and skill. Starting with a 3 measure staccato 16th note octave unison, the duet settles into a twisted waltz, then a 2/4 "chase" up and down the range, and finally into a tricky 6/8 march. Fun to play, musically interesting and challenging. * a Collop is a small slice.

Dances (16) (1685) (Miller) [211.01, 203.00 or 212.00] The Fuenffstimmigte blasende Musik (5-Part Wind Music) is perhaps Johann Pezel's (1639-1694) most well known collection, having been transcribed for 5-part brass ensemble several times. This edition is the only one to offer all 16 Dances in one set, and for a lower price than other edition's combined multiple volumes. In transcribing this set for brass quintet (2 trumpets in C, F horn, and 2 trombones), Donald Miller has left the invidual parts clean, with no editorial markings. In this manner, performing musicians may add their own markings to create their own performances. Like the 12 Sonatas of Pezel, a Suite of Dances can easily be created by programming a selection from within the collection.

Sonatas (12) (1670) (Miller) [211.01, 203.00 or 212.00] These twelve Sonatas are taken from Johann Pezel's (1639-1694) Hora Decima, a collection of works for wind instruments published in Leipzig, Germany, in 1670. These transcriptions for brass quintet (2 trumpets in C, F horn, and 2 trombones) by Donald Miller represent one of the first bodies of transcribed literature to be made available for that ensemble. As written, the Sonatas are all fairly short, running from 40 to 80 measures in length, not counting repeated sections. They are cleanly printed, allowing the musician to insert his or her own ornamentation as desired. A Pezel Suite can easily be created by programming a set of contrasting Sonatas from within the collection.

Mr. Miller has provided substitute parts so that the collection may be performed with 1 trumpet-3 trombones; 2 trumpets-2 trombones; or trumpet, horn, and 2 trombones. The entire collection is comprised of sonatinas & fugues, each a self-standing musical work in and of itself. But, like much music of this time, a combination of several contrasting selections into a Reiche Suite can be created for concert performance.

It is scored for a wind nonet consisting of 2 Bb clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 2 horns in Eb, and 2 trombones (in tenor clef). Sonatas (2) (Miller) [103.00 or 202.00] Daniel Speer, 1636-1707, who is perhaps better known today for his Sonata for Four Trombones, was a writer of many works for instrumental ensemble. These two Sonatas, taken from Das Erbe deutscher Music, v.14, have been set and edited for moden brass quartet by Donald Miller. (They are different Sonatas from those in ENS015 above). The preferred instrumentation is 103.00, but there is a substitute trumpet part to make the ensemble 202.00. Although the bottom part could be performed on tuba, the octave is high enough to perhaps be inappropriate for such a substitution. The trumpets part (in C) ranges from g1 to a2. The first trombone part stays above the staff most of the time, ranging from g to a1. The third trombone does not requie a trigger, having a range of G to c1.

These two Sonatas, taken from Das Erbe deutscher Music, v.14, have been set and edited for the moden brass quintet by Donald Miller. The preferred instrumentation is 203.00, but there is a horn substitute part to make the ensemble 213.00. Tuba could perform the bottom part instead of trombone. The two trumpets parts are in C, and have a combined range of f1 to a2. The first trombone part stays above the staff for both pieces, but never exceeds hi a1. The third trombone requires a trigger for only two notes (low D).

Sonatas (6) (Miller) [103.00, 202.00 or 112.00] This collection of quartets has been transcribed by Donald Miller from the orginal instrumentation (1 zink and three trombones) to that of a modern brass quartet. Mr. Miller has provided substitute parts so that the collection may be performed with 1 trumpet-3 trombones; 2 trumpets-2 trombones; or trumpet, horn, and 2 trombones. The trumpet parts call for C trumpet for trumpet 1, and Bb trumpet for trumpet 2. The transcriptions are all of medium difficulty, with the top trumpet occasionally ranging as high as concert B (1 ledger) above the staff. Although most of the writing for the bottom trombone part is in the staff, it should be performed on a trigger tenor or bass trombone to facilitate the occasional trigger note and several final low C's.

Festfanfare (DePaolo) [12 trombones & tympani] Written in 1960 for the opening of the World Eucharist Congress held in Munich, Germany, this fanfare was originally set for seven part mixed brass choir. It has been transcribed and arranged here for 12 trombones in two 6-part antiphonal choirs with optional tympani. Festfanfare is cast in one continuous movement, with alternating fanfare and chorale sections. Set in E flat, the entire piece is powerful and rousing, the coda section especially so with its Strauss-like layered rhythms and blazing finale. Due to its strong compositional integrity, it can readily be used as an opener or a closer, as well as anywhere within a program, Although tympani is called for in the score, it is not absolutely necessary, and if desired can be covered by performing cues within the trombone choir.
