What Else Have They Been In?

Frances Ruffelle as Eponine

If you've ever been listening to a Les Miz recording and wondered if a certain performer on the CD is on any other albums, wonder no longer! However, I'm not completely sure if this list is complete. For the most part, it only includes recordings that I have heard. You can check individual performers' links, some of which are provided on this page, for additional information

Valjeans, Javerts, Marius, Eponines, Fantines, Cosettes, Enjolras, Note on Imports

Valjeans

Colm Wilkinson (London, Broadway, 10th Anniversary Concert)
1) Evita: original cast (Che) - For die-hard Colm fans only. His performance isn't that great, and some of the old lyrics are atrocious! (Do we really want to hear Colm singing about insecticide?)
2) Phantom of the Opera: Canadian cast (Phantom) - Nothing new here, just another Phantom recording. I prefer Michael Crawford, but this is a good recording for any Colm fan to own.
3) Highlights from Jekyll & Hyde (Jekyll/Hyde) - This is a good album of a great show. Colm never seems to get really into the material, and many of the best songs are not here; but it's still good, and Linda Eder is incredible.
4) Stage Heroes (solo recording) - It contains songs from old shows like Camelot, West Side Story, and Man of La Mancha; as well as newer shows like Phantom, Les Miz, and Chess. My personal favorites are "Pity the Child" from Chess and "The Man of La Mancha," both of which are the best versions of those songs I've heard.
"COLM WILKINSON'S HOMEPAGE"

Gary Morris (Complete Symphonic Recording) - He is a country singer with several albums, none of which I've heard (sorry!).

Javerts

Terrence Mann (Broadway)
1) Beauty and the Beast: Broadway (Beast) - This is like the film soundtrack plus some new songs. Mann is excellent, especially in "If I Can't Love Her," a wonderful solo that's only on this recording.
2) Cats: Broadway cast (Rum Tum Tugger)
This is the version of Cats that I grew up with, and I always liked his songs. But if you're not already a Cats fan you probably shouldn't buy this just for Mann since his role is pretty small.
3) RAGS - He's in it, and that's all I know.
Terrence Mann

Philip Quast (CSR, 10th Anniverary)
1) The Secret Garden: Australian cast (import) (Neville) - Be warned that he's only on one song, "Lily's Eyes," a duet with Anthony Warlow. It's very expensive ($25 for just 8 tracks!), but It's great for a Warlow fan.
2) There are several recordings that feature Quast singing "Stars," but if you already have the CSR or 10th Anniversary, it's just plain silly to buy another.

Marius

Michael Ball (London, CSR, 10th Anniversary)
1) West Side Story (Tony) - How could it be bad?! This is the best version of the show that I've heard.
2) Aspects of Love (Alex) - He's great, as usual, in this Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, despite a ridiculous plot and equally absurd lyrics (How can you sing a line like "Shall I get, some coffee?").
3) Michael Ball: The Musicals (import) - He sings a lot of the same songs that everyone else does on their albums, including many Andrew Lloyd Webber standards, but he's so good that he gives them new life. He also does an interesting rendition of "Show Me" from My Fair Lady. And he sings duets by himself! ("All I Ask of You" and "Last Night of the World")
4) Michael also has several pop albums, including a greatest hits album. I think the stuff is pretty boring (Even Michael can't save it!), but my dad likes it. (all imports)

Eponines

Frances Ruffelle (Broadway, London)
1) Starlight Express (Dinah) (CD is out of print) - This show is horrible, the worst $45 I ever spent! I know that some people like this show, but I just thought it sounded like bad 80s pop music.
2) Michael Crawford Sings Andrew Lloyd Webber - Ruffelle sings the duet "Only You" (the only good song in Starlight Express) with Crawford. The album's pretty good, but don't buy it unless you like Crawford too.

Lea Salonga (10th Anniversary)
1) Miss Saigon: London (Kim) - The show is great, she's great, and if you don't already own it, get it!
2) Aladdin (Jasmine's singing voice) - I think that everyone already knows the song "A Whole New World." It's a cute movie, but Salonga isn't doing much here.
3) Lea Salonga (solo album) - This album is a waste of her talents. It's nothing but dull pop music.

Fantines

Patti Lupone (London)
1) Evita: Premiere American Recording (Eva) - This is the best version of Evita. Lupone has never been better, and Mandy Patinkin is very good as Che.
2) Sunset Boulevard: World Premiere Recording (Norma) - I don't like her voice on this recording, but it's still the best Sunset recording (although the changes made in the transition to Broadway aren't there).

Ruthie Henshall (10th Anniversary)
1) Miss Saigon: Complete Symphonic Recording (Ellen) - She's great here, but virtually indistinguishable from Claire Moore on the London recording.

Cosettes

Judy Kuhn (Broadway, 10th Anniversary)
1) Chess (Florence) - This is a good show, and Kuhn is at her best here. Highlights include "Someone Else's Story" and "I Know Him So Well"
2) Pocahontas (Pocahontas' singing voice) - This isn't the best Disney soundtrack, but Kuhn is featured heavily and she sounds great on "Colors of the Wind."
3) RAGS - I don't know anything about it, but I hear that she's in it.
4) Sunset Boulevard: Broadway (Betty) - This is a very small role and doesn't really give her a chance to shine.
5) solo album (I don't know the title) - It's all jazz (Jules Styne), and what I've heard from it isn't very good, but I don't particularly like jazz.

Rebecca Caine (London)
1) Phantom of the Opera: Canadian cast (Christine) - She's alright as Cosette, but in my opinion, she almost ruins this recording. Her voice sounds extremely nasal, and I always skip her songs.

Enjolras

Anthony Warlow
1) Jekyll & Hyde: The Complete Work (Jekyll/Hyde) - I love the show, and Warlow makes it even better! This version is far superior to Colm's, and I recommend it to anyone.
2) The Secret Garden: Australian cast (import) (Archibald) - Once again, the show's great and so is he. However this very short CD costs $25 - If you're interested in the show, buy the broadway cast with Mandy Patinkin.
3) Patience (import) - He plays a leading role in this Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Sorry, I've never heard it.
4) He has several solo recordings, all show tunes, including a greatest hits album. The two best are Center Stage and On the Boards. Coincidence?: Half the songs on Colm's solo album are also on Center Stage. (all imports)
