What If They Made a Movie...

What If They Made a Movie...

2nd National Company: street scene

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I still don't know who to cast! Email me with any suggestions and I'll add them to this page.

It's been a long time since I last updated this page, but here it is, finally. Keep writing in with suggestions.  It just might take a few months before you see them on this page.

Valjean, Javert, Marius, Eponine, Fantine, Thenardier, Mme. Thenardier, Cosette, Enjolras

Valjean: I want to cast movie stars, but who can sing this part? Colm is getting a bit old and he's not known outside of the theater world. I was thinking Mandy Patinkin, but his voice may be too sweet for the role, and I don't know if he looks strong enough (Don't forget that Valjean is supposed to have almost superhuman strength!) Someone has suggested Michael Crawford as Valjean. He definitely has the voice for it! I also got a suggestion of Michael Burgess (Canada) I got another suggestion of Sean Connery. I think he's a little old for the role (I know people are going to disagree with me on that point) and can he sing? At least he's famous, an important quality for the star of a movie. Gary Morris (Complete Symphonic Recording), Craig Schulman (Broadway, touring companies), Gabriel Byrne, Tim Curry, Liam Neeson (Valjean in the recent non-musical Les Miserables movie), Robert Marien (Paris cast, Broadway 10th anniversary cast), Kevin Kline, Terrence Mann (Javert, OBC), Antonio Banderas (Evita - the movie), Gregory Calvin Stone (current Third National Company Valjean), Douglas Sills (the Scarlet Pimpernel), and Anthony Warlow have also been suggested. It seems that people keep putting the same people who have been suggested earlier into different roles (Check out the suggestions for Javert and Thenardier)!

For those actors who received more than one vote, here's the breakdown.

Javert: Maybe Kevin Kline (He can sing! Check him out in the movie Pirates of Penzance), but he might be too silly. Of course my first choice is Philip Quast, even though he's not known by most people. Those reading my page also seem to be big Quast fans. However, I also received suggestions of Christopher Innvar (Broadway 10th anniversary cast), Jack Nicholson, George Harrison (a former Beatle, I believe...), Sean Connery, Jonathan Pryce (Miss Saigon- London, Evita - the movie), Michael Crawford, and Tim Curry.

Marius: How about Chris O'Donnell with Michael Ball's voice dubbed in? (I know, it's more than a bit insulting to dub a role in a through-sung musical!) I need serious help on this one! Many people have suggested Michael Ball, but he really is getting a little old for the role. Steve Barton (Phantom of the Opera, London cast recording), Brent Schindele (current touring company of West Side Story), Ricky Martin, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Duncan Sheik, Steven Brennan, Chris Isaak , Gilles Chiasson (the Scarlet Pimpernel), Morissey, and Thomas James O'Leary (current Phantom on Broadway) have also been suggested.

Michael Ball was the only actor to receive multiple votes. He was suggested by 8 people.

Eponine: Well, Debbie Gibson is pretty famous and she has performed the role on Broadway, but I'm not sure if she's right. Does anyone know of any actresses who can sing? Lea Salonga and Frances Ruffelle are still popular choices. Lea's work in Aladdin might qualify her as a star, which is a plus. If Robin Williams was cast as Thenardier, they'd have half of the Aladdin cast in Les Miz. Sarah Uriarte Berry (current Broadway Eponine), Jennifer Love Hewitt (see my mention of her as a possible Cosette), Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting), Tori Amos , Jessica Snow-Wilson, and Kate Winslet have been suggested as well.

Fantine: Madonna, for star power. We already know she's a pretty good singer. It's been suggested to me that maybe Michelle Pfeiffer could play this role (She sings in "The Fabulous Baker Boys"). I also received votes for Madonna, Olga Talyn (current touring company of Phantom of the Opera), Christine Andreas, (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn.

Thenardier: Robin Williams! It's an easy role to sing, he's not bad in Aladdin, and he's a big star! All the "Dream Cast" fans tend to pick Alun Armstrong, but I also got suggestions of Mark Calking (current touring company of Phantom of the Opera), Meat Loaf, Gary Beach (Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast OBC) and Tim Curry.

Mme. Thenardier: Rosie O'Donnell could be good, but she might be too nice. Or maybe Glenn Close. She can sing, and after seeing her in 101 Dalmations, I'm convinced she can do anything. I also got a suggestion of Madonna in this role, but somehow I can't imagine her ever taking a part like this (But then again, this is a fantasy movie cast, right?) I heard that she's been signed to a role in the movie version of the musical Chicago. Maybe this is her genre now. Recently, I have gotten many suggestions for this role, including Debbie Harry (Blondie), Patricia Hurd (current touring company of Phantom), Judy Kaye, Jenny Galloway (10th Anniversary concert), Kathy Kinny (The Drew Carey Show), Kathy Bates (Misery), and Marcia Lewis.

Cosette: We could probably get away with a young unknown in this small role. Who's been playing this role on Broadway lately? The first suggestion I got was Rebecca Caine. If you've read other sections of this page, you may know that she's not exactly my favorite Cosette, in addition to the fact that she played the role over ten years ago and is much too old to play an 18-yr-old. Many people have suggested Judy Kuhn. I actually had people suggest Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five) for this role and later for Eponine, and I really think she'd be a good choice. She is a good singer and actress and she's the right age for either role. Christianne Noll (Jekyll & Hyde, Broadway cast recording), Susan Owen (current touring company of Phantom), Samantha Lasch (current touring company of West Side Story), Jennifer Dawn Stillings (current touring company of Phantom), Mariah Carey, Alison Lory (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Drew Barrymore, Sarah Rice, and Kate Winslet (I know people love Titanic and all... but can she even sing?) have also been mentioned. I also got two suggestions for young Cosette: Theresa Davis and Kirstin Dunst (Interview with the Vampire).

The vote breakdown is:

Possible Cosettes Judy Kuhn Kate Winslet Jennifer Love Hewitt

Enjolras: Charles Dance, Michael Maguire (OBC, 10th Anniversary Concert), Gary Mauer, Antonio Banderas, Paul McGann, and Anothony Warlow (Australia, Commplete Symphonic Recording) have been suggested. I love Warlow, but I still think he's too old now!

Michael Maguire was the only actor to receive multiple votes. He was suggested by 7people.
