The Carolina Jazz Society, the oldest continuous jazz club east of the Mississippi, is a society of lovers of traditional jazz, also known as Dixieland or New Orleans jazz--an original American art form. The club gathers every first Sunday of the month at the senior center in Maxcy Gregg Park in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, to hear the house band--all musicians with long experience playing traditional jazz--and usually a guest soloist. In the past, these have included jazz luminaries such as Milt Hinton, Billy Butterfield, Maxine Sullivan, Bob Haggert, Ernie Carson, Kenny Deavern, and Bill Allred. Members hear great traditional jazz every month and receive The Cat's Meow, a monthly newsletter featuring news about the Society and items of interest to jazz fans. Non-members may attend the concerts for $6.00. |
