Prayers For Vartan Hakobyan
Vartan V. Hakobyan, Jr., was in a public minivan riding
home on February 2, 1999. He never made it. The car crash threw him out
of the van causing severe head injuries. He has been in a coma ever since.
On February 21, 1999, Vartan turned 17. He is in the department of
reanimation at Erebuni hospital in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia.
The problems the family has encountered are, of course, the financial
problems and a lack of medical knowledge in his country to deal with his
injuries. Vartan does not receive any specialized treatment, there are
no brain injury facilities in Armenia, no equipment, no medications, no
rahabs at all.
Vartan's Aunt, Gayane Hagopian writes, " Vartan had a surgery on May
4th, a visiting doctor installed a shunt, and he never visited again.
Local doctors think that the shunt doesn't operate, it must be either
removed or replaced. Also, they are going to discharge Vartan from the
hospital by the end of the month without any further recommendations.
Vartan is still on a g-tube, and a trach which is not good. It's just a
pierced throat, an open wound without isolation, with that plastic tube
sticking out of the wound. The doctors say he needs a surgery......
