1975 console photos for the curious.

Original console that I designed and constructed for my own studio back in 1975.

There wasn't a whole lot of affordable pro recording gear available in 1975. You could have bought something simple like a Tascam 5B mixer or a seriously expensive "real console". The console above had 16 modular inputs with fully parametric EQ on each and had 8 output busses for a Tascam 80-8. The mike preamps evolved into a balanced, transformerless design using high slew rate, for the time, LM318 op-amps. All console outputs had hi-current, discrete buffers for driving low impedance lines. The metering was done with 24 multiplexed, peak reading led displays. The sunken patch bay could access almost every circuit module for some major configuration flexibility.
As you can see from the bottom view, the design eventually grew past it's original 40" x 65" housing and I had to start fitting in new circuitry and wiring where I could. The console was retired in 1987 and is currently resting here at the Genesis Trigger Systems' electronics shop.

Thankfully today, there is a wide choice of affordable, high quality recording gear readily available!
