Sculpture
Portfolio
of
Gerard Bowles

Welcome to examples of my sculpture. My art interests did not start out in sculpture. My interest grew from the influences of sculptor Pierre DuFayet, sculpture instructor Freda Sohn, and my love of nature. I worked for Dufayet as his assistant for two years, helping to build and install over 30 sculptures in Columbia, Baltimore, and New York. I wanted my MFA in design but, the Penland Scholarship was for sculpture. I have not been a constant working and exhibiting sculptor. The realities of earning a living dictated a mass-communications career. Therefore, all of these pieces are very old. I include them in my portfolio only to demonstrate my three-dimensional eye, and my wide knowledge of sculpture materials. For the latter reason I have chosen work in a variety of materials. I have taught sculpture courses at College of the Potomac, Majorie Webster College, and Wilkes Community College. I do love sculpture though, and I hope some relief in my recent career change will allow me time for more work, and I'll be able to add additional pieces to this page. Thank you for coming.

"Red Sculpture," Plantamal series.
Materials are epoxy and polyester resins covering a polystyrene form.

"Steel Figure," material is torch-carved steel

The above and below are part of the Plantamal series.
Materials are epoxy and polyester resins, with epoxy-impregnated
pigments, covering a polystyrene form.

This sculpture was created with a combination of casting cement, and cement carving via a process I invented. Al Varanna and other sculptors still use my cement-carving process.

This is cast aluminum, and part of the Plantamal series. The piece was formed in polystyrenes, textured with wax, and then the polystyrene and wax were burned out and cast in aluminum with a sand casting process. The patina is very tough, a combination of acid treatments and a finish made by combining pigments and epoxy. The finish is translucent so the metal shows through and retains an important part of the visual effect.

I will soon photograph and add additional pieces to this page. Within a year I should be able to add new sculpture.
