On a Receipt Roll for Bounty of Recruits. Enlisted March 3, 1862 at Americus, Sumter Co.
Georgia, by Lt. M.E. Sparks(?) for what appears to be a $50.46 bounty.
Name contained in "Register of Officers and Soldiers of the Army of the Confederate States
who were killed in battle, or who died of wounds or disease." This register says deceased May 12,
1862 at Camp Winder. Received June 20, 1863. Certificate number 77. In print, at the bottom
it says "This register appears to have been compiled in the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office
from returns furnished by Hospitals and by Regimental and Company Officers." However,
every other family record we have of William G. Lane, including his tombstone at the Hunter
Cemetery in Brooks Co., says that he died December 25, 1883.
.....although not contained in Henderson's "Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia,
1861-1865", this name was added on the above information submitted by a descendant, Casey Lane,
in 2001.
