Costa Rica,  for the first time, . . .or the next!

It seems that many of the articles, books, and even a website I've read about Costa Rica, were written by people who were here for a relatively short visit. Many times they've included a lot of wrong information and omissions. Some writers seem to recommend hotels that they hear about or stay in, without asking the owner or manager about their "gay policy." While putting together a printed gay map and directory in 1996, I discovered a number of owners of hotels listed in various printed gay guides, claimed they had no knowledge of their inclusion. With more questions, I discovered that some wanted the "gay money," but did not want gay people acting in the same manner that is considered appropriate for non-gay people, - in the public areas like the swimming pool. Even a few of the gay-owned hotels (with mixed clientele) had this double standard. Other times, the information is simply old, rates have changed, or businesses have been bought and sold.

Having lived here since '96, I'm certainly no authority, but I can usually direct people to accurate sources of information. One of my favorites to recommend, is the Tico Times "Exploring Costa Rica" guide. It is published every year by the largest English language newspaper in Central America. The Tico Times newspaper comes out every Friday, and is available at many newsstands and bookstores. Costa Ricans have adopted the affectionate nickname of "Tico." North Americans, (and sometimes Europeans), are called "Gringos," with the same affection, . . . as long as the Gringos are not trying to invade the region like William Walker attempted in 1856.

My first trip to Costa Rica was in August of 1986. My one month stay was divided between the capital city of San José, and the Peninsula de Osa. I returned in the spring of '96 with the intention to stay. My first year was spent managing a small gay hotel in the Pacific resort area of Manuel Antonio/Quepos, then moved to San José in April '97. Comparing my first trip to the present, I have good news and really good news. The good news is that San José has changed a lot, while the Osa Peninsula hasn't really changed at all. The virgin rainforest in Corcovado National Park on the Osa is still virginal. Researchers are still discovering new species of plants and animals every day. The giant tropical trees which characterize a primary rainforest are perhaps a few feet taller.

San José has grown also. Five major shopping malls have sprung up, - including Mall San Pedro, a very uniquely designed, four & eight floor shopping/office center, (the largest mall in Central America), is just east of downtown. The fifth & sixth floor has "Planet Mall," The largest disco in Central America.  The smaller malls are nice too, like Plaza del Sol in Curridabat, (eastern suburb), and Plaza Major in Rohrmoser, (western suburb). The merchandise in the stores have improved both in quality and selection. There are many of the same designer names and labels I remember from the malls "back home." Multi cinemas (54 in Costa Rica) are all over the city, though the choice of films is still somewhat limited. Almost all of the movies are in English with Spanish subtitles, and from one to twelve months behind the North American releases. One of the nicest is the new 8-plex Cinemark at MultiPlaza. It features stadium style, high back seats, state-of-the-art equipment, and a cappuccino and dessert bar.  The ever expanding MultiPlaza Mall is the nicest, most upscale shopping in the country, with department and specialty stores most like North America.

San José has everything that a North American city has for gay people. Gay bars, discos, gyms, boutiques, organizations, hotels, and restaurants. It also has museums of history, science, and art that are like none other on the planet. For example, the Gold Museum is four stories underground below the Plaza de la Cultura. This "museum in a vault" contains over 2000 priceless, pre-Columbian gold artifacts. The Jade Museum, located on the 11th floor of the National Insurance Building, (INS), has the world's largest collection of pre-Columbian jade. There are a number galleries and the last one includes fertility icons, (pre-Columbian dildoes). Numerous national art galleries as well as private ones often exhibit the work of gay artists. Now that I live in "the big city," I really enjoy going to see the variety of performances at the exquisite, 100+ year old, Theatro Nacional. This showplace draws some of the best performers from all over the world. Costa Rica's own National Symphony Orchestra always impresses me with their artistic mastery,- (and since I've been a concert musician, I'd like to think that I know what I am talking about). Usually the cheap seats, (top balcony, side door entrance) are 1,000 colones, (about $3.) The lower levels are about 5,000 colones. The theatre is not huge, so even the fourth level seats are not bad.

The variety of food and restaurants has been another surprising improvement over my first trip. Costa Rica has always been blessed with more wonderful and exotic fresh fruits and vegetables than you can imagine. New combinations and the cooking styles from numerous cultures have created an endless variety. The seafood is good and fresh. Chicken is, well, chicken. The beef is lean and a bit chewy, since Tico cows do a lot of walking and do not have the tasty fat marbled through the meat, like Gringo cows. We have the usual North American things like oranges, blackberries, strawberries, corn, asparagus, apples, etc. We also have zapotes, guanabanas, marañones (which is the fruit that cashew nuts grow from the bottom), mamones, guavas, ayotes, chayotes, and a zillion more. Almost every restaurant, cafe, and soda, offers freshly made juices. In season, the more common ones are: mora (blackberry), piña (pineapple), fresa (strawberry), guanabana (soursop), naranja (orange), cas, tamarindo, papaya, and mango. I've learned that there are "Tico restaurants" and "Gringo restaurants." Many times the only difference is the atmosphere and that the "Gringo restaurants" charge twice as much, (or more). In the small "Tico restaurants," many of them are called "Soda ____" (usually a female name), you can order the "plato del dia" (plate of the day) or "casado" starting at around 800 colones, (about $2.), - and you're full! They always include rice and beans, choice of beef or chicken, (sometimes fish or beef tongue), a little salad, maybe picadillo (hot vegetable combination), and sometimes come with sliced fried sweet plantains (large, firm bananas). On the other end of the culinary scale are the restaurants at the new Marriott Hotel, near Real Cariari Mall. The variety of their Sunday brunch is unbelievable! I can not recall any buffet having such a variety in the states! (about $25. per person, and worth it!)  In between we have the North American restaurant & fast-food chains including: McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Papa John's, Quiznos, KFC, Church's, TGIFriday's, Tony Roma's, Denny's, and more.  I know many Gringos stick their noses in the air at fast-food chains, but I should mention that the atmosphere and quality of food and service tend to be a notch above what is available in the States.  Other local restaurant chains offer something different with quality and consistancy, like  Rosti-Pollo and Spoon.

The Green Season, a great time to visit!

One thing that surprises every first time visitor, is the weather. We're about 1,000 miles south of Florida. So you probably think that it is always hot, sticky, and buggy, - right??? Guess what? There are places in Costa Rica where the temperature dips into the 50's every night! At Chirripo, (highest area in the middle of Costa Rica), the range is from 16° to 68°! Last year I saw foot-long icicles from water dripping off rock walls along the side of the road. Where I now live, just 15 minutes from downtown San José, the daily temperature range is in 60's and 70's year around. The average temperatures of most of the Central Valley are like North Carolina in the spring,  with the all-time record high of only 89 degrees! When summer temperatures soar in the U.S., think of coming south to cool off! Of course the coastal areas have the warmer, more humid, tropical environment you'd expect. And the rainy season is not all it's cracked up to be! Before living in the Pacific rainforest, I had expectations of endless days of rain. Not so! Weather patterns have slowly changed over the years, like everywhere else. The months of May through November are called "the green season" and December through April is called "the dry season." The northwest province of Guanacaste is called "The Texas of Central America," and can get pretty dry, dusty, and brown during the dry season, with low humidity, clear starry nights and cool breezes. The rest of the country still experiences small occasional showers during these months. During the green season a typical day starts off with bright sun and blue skies. The clouds slowly build and by mid-afternoon it is mostly cloudy. It may or may not rain before sundown, but it's a safe bet that it'll rain during the night. Also, along with the cooler weather, the lower prices for hotels, tours, and airfares are good reasons to visit in the green season!

Like everything else, Costa Rica probably has more species of insects than anywhere else. The big surprise is that they, (ei. mosquitoes), are usually not a problem. In much of the country, bats  and frogs provide natural insect control. At the beginning of the green season, May and June, some mosquito repellent may come in handy if you are traveling to the coastal areas.

The exchange rate adjusts about one colon every two weeks. This means everybody likes the more stable dollar, and many businesses have dual bank accounts,- one for colones, one for dollars. Just about everyone will accept dollars, although sometimes there's a challenge calculating the exchange rate and getting accurate change back from small businesses like street vendors and taxi drivers. It's pretty easy to find an ATM that will give you colones from your credit card or some bank debit cards. Most tourist oriented businesses accept credit cards as well, but ask about the service fees. Traveler's checks are less popular because the business has to wait over a month to receive credit to their account.

Getting around the capital city as well as the rest of the country, is easy! Many Ticos do not have cars so public transportation is heavily relied upon. Taxi fares are quite reasonable, but make sure they turn on the meter! Also, don't leave luggage or possessions in a taxi, even for a moment. Buses are really cheap, clean, and colorful. To get around the country fast, there are two domestic airlines, Sansa and Travelair, and several air-charter companies. While managing a gay guesthouse on the Central Pacific coast town of Manuel Antonio, (Quepos), I'd suggest to my guests to take the bus trip from San José, (around/thru the mountains), and then the twenty minute flight over the mountains to return. If they were planning to come to the beach at the beginning of their visit to Costa Rica, I'd suggest flying, to avoid the three and a half hour bus ride after a long plane trip. I'd also suggest traveling in the early mornings, - the weather is cooler and the chance of rain increases in the afternoons. It's a good idea to keep handy  the phone number of the hotel you are traveling to, should you encounter any problems or need assistance. If you're thinking of renting a car, be aware that even though the name of the rental car companies are the same as in the U.S., the policies and renter's responsibilities may be quite different. For example, if your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, the rental company may give little or no help with finding a mechanic. Any damage done to the car will cost a lot more than you would expect. There have been incidents when the car rental company tries to charge the tourist for routine maintenance repairs, even when a part has simply worn out and happened to fail while that tourist was driving it. Most companies offer rental contracts in English. If you pay for your rental car with a credit card, it's easier to resolve any differences if you're surprised when you get your statement. And many tourists have rented cars without incident. But keep in mind, that for the person doing the driving, it may not be much of a vacation. Between the "loco Tico drivers," the "sightseeing Gringo drivers," no sidewalks outside cities (meaning people, pets, and cows on the roads), poor road conditions* in some areas, and very few road signs, drivers really need to keep focused on their driving! (*the government is currently on a campaign to improve the roads and great progress been made!)

Based on the stories I've heard over the past year, I feel it's necessary to mention a few common sense things. Like anywhere else in the world, there are people here, (both Tico and Gringo), who will do or say anything to be able to steal your money, wallet, passport, clothes, or anything else of value. The hotels try to do what they can to protect their guests, but ultimately it comes down to the tourist using good judgment. If you wouldn't ask a particular type of person to your home, then you probably shouldn't be involved with them here. Costa Rica also has a unique variety of beaches including rocky, stony, and sandy beaches with white, gray, blue/black, tan, and pink sand. The gay beach at Manuel Antonio is great because of abundant shade trees and its seclusion from the main public beaches, - but you have to cross a couple of rocky points to get to the gay beach. This is not safe 90 minutes before, and 90 minutes after high tide. (Check with your hotel for the daily tide times). Many of the beaches can have dangerous currents and rip tides at various times of the year, as well as underwater rocks. Even the surf can be dangerous when the waves are too big.

The list of things to do and see in Costa Rica are endless but I'll give you a list of some of the favorites: swimming, surfing, scuba, snorkeling, fishing, boating, kayaking, jet skiing, sailing, para-sailing, sailboarding, white-water rafting, floating down a quiet river on an inner tube, and slowly simmering in the hot springs. Then there's hiking, cave exploring, mountain climbing, mountain biking, bungee jumping, and horseback riding. Also, canopy tours, rainforest tours, coffee plantation tours, waterfall tours, island tours, botanical garden tours, cultural tours, museum tours, historical tours, archeology tours, bird watching, dolphin watching, whale watching, and of course, people watching.

And if I get homesick for my native Central Florida, "Parque de Diversiones" is on the northwest side of San Jose. While it's not quite Disney World, it's still a fun place to visit. Besides the usual amusement park rides and nice landscaping, there is a popular section called "Pueblo Antiguo." This is an authentic re-creation of a Tico village of 100 years ago. Most of the buildings are actual homes and shops that were carefully dismantled, transported, and reconstructed for this living museum. Each evening they offer a variety of cultural entertainment, like folkloric dancing and plays about Costa Rican history.

The Ticos love to party! There are holidays, celebrations, and festivals for every reason, season, and saint. Among the nicest of the world-class festivals here, is the Annual International Music Festival in July/August, which draws a wide variety of musicians from all over the world, performing at various theatres in San José, as well as in some of the most unique and beautiful resort settings around the country. There is also the International Festival of the Arts in March (of even number years), which features the most talented people from many nations in the fine and performance arts. This festival lasts a couple of weeks with a grand opening ceremony and grand finale, - complete with parades and fireworks. Think of it as sort of a "Olympics for the Arts." In mid-October, the Caribbean port city of Limon has its annual colorful Carnivale de Limon, celebrating the unique music, dance, foods, and pagentry of the Caribbean culture. The month of December brings many holiday concerts and parades- (Festival of Lights Parade) and the Festejos Populares de Zapote, (like a Tico-style state fair), -for the holiday season - Your travel agent can advise you of the exact dates.

The Heart of The Americas

I receive frequent email asking about the Ticos' attitudes towards gay people.  Ticos are very courteous, fair-minded, respectful people.  They are extremely proud of their democracy.  Over the years they have heard numerous stories carried by the local papers and television about various important people involved in various gay related scandals.  In Oct. of 1997, La Nacion, the leading paper published a suppliment series about human sexuality.  One issue contained a series of articles about homosexuality.  It was very objective, positive, and supportive.  There was even an article advising gay & lesbian people how to "come out" to their parents.  Whenever a gay-related controversy does come up, government officials are quick to remind those narrow-minded people that this is a democracy and that the Constitution guarantees equal treatment and respect for all people!  Historically, Ticos have long thought differently than their Central American neighbors.  The reason that the army was abolished in 1949 was because it was an idea that the general population supported.  Ticos have some prejudices, but not nearly as strong as what is common in so many countries around the world.  Negative attitudes about ethnicity here are minimal.  It's common place to see mixed-ethnic couples, black & white, asian & white, etc. holding hands and being affectionate in public.  A photograph of many Tico families would look like the "United Nations."  Being from a redneck area in Florida, I'm always surprised when I'm in crowd of Ticos, (like at one of the fairs or outdoor concerts), with beer flowing freely and everyone is having a great time with rarely any problems. At one such event, I said to Jorge, "I wonder if the police realize how lucky they are to be in Costa Rica?"

Arenal... Volcano and Lake area

is about a three and a half hour drive northwest of San José, through La Fortuna from the east side of Lake Arenal, or through Canas and Tilaran south and west of the lake. Road conditions of both routes are good. If you are not driving, a recommended bus trip costs less than $5., takes you from the bus station in San José at Calle 14 between Avenidas 9 & 11, at 7:30am, to Tilaran (¢700.) You arrive in Tilaran about 11:00 am, in time for lunch at the "Restaurant Mary." Catch the bus to Fortuna & Ciudad Quesada at 12:30 pm (¢300.) Caribbean Coast-Puerto Viejo

About 45 minutes south of the city of Limon, is the town of Puerto Viejo.  The entire Caribbean coast is Costa Rica with an even more relaxed, Caribbean island type atmosphere.  The area is easily accessible by car, (mostly good roads), and by bus.  The new Caribbean bus terminal is San José makes the first part of your trip to the east coast, a real pleasure.  There are several national parks and wildlife preserves in the area, as well as numerous recreational activities.  

Biribá (bee-ree-BAH) 750-0103  is the name of a tropical fruit grown in the gardens belonging to these two rental houses located between the rainforest and the Caribbean sea. Expansive grassy areas with large shade trees surround the houses which are trimmed out in gingerbread style. Located in Playa Chiquita about 400 meters from the beach, Biribá is quiet and gives a sense of privacy. Nearby are some of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches, a selection of restaurants, small stores, and great nature. There is a good chance you will see monkeys, sloths and toucans in the immediate vicinity, and colorful tropical fish in the warm sea. Two houses are available. Manuel Antonio - Quepos, Central Pacific Coast

from San José, is three and a half hours by bus around the mountains, or a twenty minute flight over the mountains. 24 hr. ATM at Banco Popular, Quepos, accepts Visa cards with pin number. Local buses every 30 minutes, and taxis are available to take people to/from beaches, the park, town, etc. Manuel Antonio Nacional Parque is closed on Mondays, admission less than $10. Early morning walks to the beach may reveal squirrel monkeys, white-face monkeys, sloths, pisote, and hundreds of species of birds and butterflies. The "Playitas" or little beaches, is where the gay beach is located, - at the northwest end of the public beach in Manuel Antonio. Public nudity is not legal anywhere in Costa Rica, but beach security officers will simply ask nude bathers to put their swimsuits on, if they happen to extend their patrol to the gay beach. Safaris Corobici  Our trained guides row the boat, there is no need for you to paddle, just relax and enjoy the abundant wildife on this river. except for a few ripples this gentle river has no whitewater. There are several places to swim so remember to bring your bathing suit, camera, binoculers, sunscreen, and hat. The Corobici flows from the base of the Tenorio Volcano and meanders 25 miles out to the Gulf of Nicoya. The river is bordered by a tropical forest where you will see towering trees like the ceiba,palm,mahogany and our national tree the Guanacaste Tree. Iguanas -some up to 6 feet long, monkeys, otters, coatis, and some small harmless crocodiles, all make their home along the banks of the Corobicí. This is a birdwatchers paradise, Aracaris, parrots, mot-mots, cuckoos, laughing falcons, kingfishers, egrets, woodstorks, ospreys, trogans, seven diferent species of herons including the boatbilled heron all have been seen song the Corobicí River. We are on the way to the northwest beaches, the volcanos & near Palo Verde & Santa Rosa. The headquarters for Safaris Corobis is located on the Panamerican Highway 2-1/2 hours North from San José and only 2 miles north of Cañas, Guanacaste. We have a 2 hr trip that costs $37 per person, a 3 hr trips that costs $45 per person, and a halfday trip (4 hour river trip plus lunch after) that costs $60 per person. Nosara is about 40 minutes (driving) north of the town of Samara, on the Pacific Coast of the Nicoya Peninsula.  If you are driving from San José, you can take a shortcut via the Tempisque Ferry (north of the city of Puntarenas). The waiting time for the ferry is long on Fridays, so you may consider driving through Liberia. The roads are paved and good condition until Samara. The easiest way to get to Nosara is by plane, - Sansa (part of LACSA / Grupo Taca), or Pitts Air Taxi.  There is a local taxi service as well as a (6am) direct bus to/from San José or indirect bus to San José with a change in Nicoya.
