History

  • Martin Luther

Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483, in Eisleben in the province of Saxony.  He was raised in Mansfeld, where his father worked as a miner.  He studied at Magdeburg and Eisenach before attending the University of Erfurt to study law at his father's urging.  Less than a year later, Martin Luther abandoned the law to enter the Augustinian monastery.  By 1512 he had earned his doctorate in theology and became professor of biblical literature at Wittenberg University.  In 1517 Martin Luther wrote and posted a list of 95 theses which caused great controversy throughout Germany.  (This theses was the beginning of Protestant religion. See Birth of the Lutheran Church)  Because of this list and Martin Luther's refusal to recant what he had written, Martin Luther was made an outlaw.  In 1525 Martin Luther married former nun, Katharina von Bora.  This further emphasized his rejection of monasticism and celibacy for clergy.  For the rest of his life, Martin Luther worked on writing, preaching, and organizing the reformed church.  Martin Luther died on February 18, 1546, at his birthplace, Eisleben.

Information taken from Compton's Reference Collection 1996

The Protestant Reformation began in Germany in 1517.  This reformation was initiated by Martin Luther's list of 95 theses.  The largest issue with the Catholic Church was how mankind receives salvation.  In the doctrine of justification by faith Luther stated that in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God was able to absolve mankind from the penalty of disobedience and to declare mankind righteous.  Because this was testified to in the Bible, the Bible became the source for belief.

  • Lutheran Practices

The Lutheran Church works on a three year lectionary cycle.  Every Sunday there are scripture passages read from the Old Testament, the Epistles in the New Testament, and the Gospel. Every three years the same scriptures are read. This cycle is designed to try to include most of the Bible within a three year period.  It also allows for growth when scriptures are revisited every three years. This system also encourages fellowship as congregations around the country know that on Sunday morning they are united with each other through the scriptures for that Sunday.
