Photos and describtion of a old Union / Uilleann Pipe

Back to first page

This is a complete view of the set.

There is no bass regulator on this set. It was lost or remounted. A close look at the stock shows, that the third regulator was possibly added later and removed again.

The chanterstock is straight. The bore of the stock is very narrow (16 mm !)

The bag is made out of 'Guttapercha', a material for electric isolation, commom between the wars.

An 'exploded' Uilleann

This is a view of the main stock. The piece of wood on the left side was in the box of the pipes. It fits to the position of the third regulator.

The bariton regulator. One key is missing, two are remounted, because the spring is broken.

This is the chanter. It is bend like a banana. The upper side shows how much material has been scratched away by the fingers of the player. All keys have been removed a long time ago, as the mountings are polished away by useage. The pitch is 'D' and the sound is still bright and well in tune.

The tenor regulator and the bariton drone. The regulator seems to be original. The upper section of the bottom part of the drone had been replaced by a plastic tube. The original part had been broken and was replaced by a piece of cane.

The tenor drone

The bass drone. The upper left part (where the top is mounted to the drone) has been replaced by a plastic tube. The original part was broken in former days and had been replaced by a piece of cane.
The top part of the drone had become a homeplace for a worm. Don't ask me, what kind of worm is able to eat such an old wood. Nevertheless its hunger stopped after two bores of 10 mm.

The bellow and the connection tube between bellow and blowpipe are missing.

Sorry - this pictures are all yellow. The negatives had been developed badly, but I will replace them soon.
More pictures and detailled planes (blueprints) will come soon.
