WHO I AM IN CHRIST

Read and reread the identity statements listed. See yourself in them. Believe them. Walk in them. And your behavior as a Christian will conform to what you believe as you walk by faith.

I AM ACCEPTED IN CHRIST

I am God's child (JOHN 1:12)
I am God's friend (JOHN 15:15)
I have been justified (ROMANS 5:1)
I am united with the Lord and one with Him in spirit (1 CORINTHIANS 6:17)
I have been bought with a price; I belong to God (1 CORINTHIANS 6:20)
I am a member of Christ's Body (1 CORINTHIANS 12:27)
I am a saint (EPHESIANS 1:1)
I have been adopted as God's child (EPHESIANS 1:5)
I have been redeemed and forgiven of all my sins (COLOSSIANS 1:14)
I am complete in Christ (COLOSSIANS 2:10)

I AM SECURE IN CHRIST

I am free forever from condemnation (ROMANS 8:1,2)
I am assured that all things work together for good (ROMANS 8:28)
I am free from any condemning charges against me (ROMANS 8:33, 34)
I cannot be separated from the love of God (ROMANS 8:35)
I have been established, anointed and sealed by God (2 CORINTHIANS 1:21)

"Who are you?" It sounds like a simple question requiring a simple answer, but it really isn't. I believe wholeheartedly that your hope for growth, meaning and fulfillment as a Christian is based on understanding who you are--specifically your identity in Christ as a child of God. Your understanding of who you are is the critical foundation for your belief structure and your behavior patterns as a Christian. Often what we show on the outside is a false front designed to disguise who we really are and cover up the secret hurts we feel about our identity. Somehow we believe that if we appear attractive or perform well or enjoy a certain amount of status, then we will have it all together inside as well. But that's not true. External appearance, accomplishment and recognition don't
necessarily reflect--or produce--internal peace and maturity. All the stuff and status you can acquire don't add up to personal wholeness.

But what about life in God's kingdom? The success-equals-happiness and
failure-equals-hopelessness equations don't exist. Everyone has exactly the same opportunity for a meaningful life. Why? Because wholeness and meaning in life are not the products of what you have or don't have, what you've done or haven't done. You are already a whole person and possess a life of infinite meaning and purpose because of who you are--a child of God. The only identity equation that
works in God's kingdom is you plus Christ equals wholeness and meaning.
"If our identity in Christ is the key to wholeness," you may ask, "why do so many believers have difficulty with self-worth, spiritual growth and maturity?" Because we have been deceived by the devil. Our true identity in Christ has been distorted by the great deceiver himself. We've been sucked into the devil's futile equation. We've been tricked into believing that what we do makes us what we are. And that false belief sends us into a tailspin of hopelessness and defeat.
Being a Christian is not just a matter of getting something; it's a matter of being someone. A Christian is not simply a person who gets forgiveness, who gets to go to heaven, who gets the Holy Spirit, who gets a new nature. A Christian, in terms of our deepest identity, is a saint, a spiritually born child of God, a divine masterpiece, a child of light, a citizen of heaven. Being born again transformed you into someone who didn't exist before. What you receive as a Christian isn't the point; it's who you are. Understanding your identity in Christ is absolutely
essential to your success at living the Christian life. No person can consistently behave in a way that's inconsistent with the way he perceives himself. If you think you're a no-good bum, you'll probably live like a no-good bum. But if you see yourself as a child of God who is spiritually alive in Christ, you'll begin to live in victory and freedom as He lived. Next to a knowledge of God, a knowledge of who you are is by far the most important truth you can possess.

Are you aware that there is someone alive and active in the world today who is dead set against you seeing yourself as spiritually alive and complete in Christ? It's Satan, of course. He can do nothing to damage your position and identity in Christ. But if he can deceive you into believing his lie--that you are not acceptable to God and that you'll never amount to anything as a Christian--then you will live as if you have no position or identity in Christ. Satan's deception concerning your identity is his major weapon against your growth and maturity in Christ. But look again at the hope-filled words of 1 John 3:1-3: "See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are...Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is. And every one who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." What is the believer's hope? That he will someday be changed into Christ's image? That's part of it, but that's only a future hope. What is your hope for today and tomorrow? That you're a child
of God now! And the person whose confidence is in being a child of God "purifies himself"--he begins to live according to his perception. The primary truth you need to know about God in order for your faith to remain strong is that His love and acceptance is unconditional. When your walk of faith is strong, God loves you. When your walk of faith is weak, God loves you. When you're strong one moment and weak the next, strong one day and weak the next, God loves you. God's love for you is the great eternal constant in the midst of all the inconsistencies of your daily walk. You're a righteous, accepted child of God. No matter what else you may have been taught or believed about yourself, your identity in Christ is solid Bible truth.
