Guatemala Truth is dedicated to the more than 150,000 Guatemalans and others who were killed by the Guatemalan army and its paramilitary support units during the long and brutal civil war between 1954--the year of the CIA-led coup which toppled the government of Col. Jacobo Arbenz, the democratically elected president of Guatemala--until the signing of the United Nations- brokered peace accords on December 29th, 1996. During that period, the Guatemalan army--by its own count--destroyed 662 towns and villages. More than one million people were internally displaced while hundreds of thousands more fled their country, seeking asylum in other nations. This site is an international memorial to those who perished and a declaration of the injustice against those who perpetrated their persecution. To honor those who died and to denounce their assailants, Guatemala Truth hereby publishes the names of the deceased and, as it can be ascertained from reliable accounts, the names of those agencies and individuals who killed them. It is hoped that this memorial will help the survivors of the Guatemalan holocaust bring closure to the horrific past and honor to their sacrifice.
