Fujikawa Maru

Marga on the upper deck

The Fujikawa Maru is one of the top wrecks in Truk Lagoon. Laying in relative shallow water, the diver can enjoy the beautiful soft coral growth on this magnificent wreck. Also there is a very interesting cargo in one of the holds: parts of Zero fighter planes.

The Fujikawa Maru was buildt in 1938 in the Misubishi docks. The ship was 450 feet long and had a tonnage of 6938 tons. She served as liner between Japan and various countries, like the USA, South America and India. On December 1940 the japanese Navy took over the ship and converted it to an aircraft ferry. With the conversion came the installation of 6 inch guns at the bow and the stern. Afterwards the Fujikawa Maru delivered airplanes to the japanese troops on the Marshall, Gilberts and Caroline Islands during several trips.
In September 1943 the ship was torpedoed by the US submarine USS Permit. But despite significant damage, she reached Truk Lagoon for repair. After several more trips, the Fujikawa Maru was back in Truk Lagoon, when an American torpedo bomber sunk her with one torpedo in February 1994 during the air attacks at Truk Lagoon.
