ARCHITECTURAL CERAMICS HISTORY

Historically, the Ceramic Arts have played an integral part in architecture. The use of fired clay tile, both structurally and decoratively, can be traced to ancient Greece and Italy where tile was and still is used in roofing, flooring and wall decoration. Brilliantly colored tile murals of Mesopotamia, Assyria and Babylonia are some of the spectacular examples of the use of ceramic tile. It was during the late Middle Ages that modern tiles direct lineage can best be traced with unmistakably strong ties to Mediterranean cultures.

Unique art tile is in the vanguard of contemporary art today, bridging the gap between total realism and the more formidable abstract. Being both visual and tactile, tile can be enjoyed on many levels. With a natural warmth art tile makes space come alive with color, design and texture. Art tile on the wall can create a strong visual integration between tile used on the floor and the surrounding environment.

As a consistent element throughout the course of civilization, tiles, with their diverse application, have moved from being a strictly utilitarian, structural material to the ultimate in aesthetic creativity.

This tradition is being carried on today by Helen Weisz, Architectural Ceramics, by producing wall panels of art tile, custom designed for residential and corporate environments. The company's work reflects Weisz's rich and diverse knowledge of ceramic history and the art of tile making.

Site-specific installations are designed for interior environments: private residences, corporate boardrooms, conference rooms and lobbies. Weisz works closely with clients, architects, designers and galleries to develop commissioned work to fit the specific client's needs and personal interpretations of what clients feel their individual spaces should reflect.
