  • Attention all Steering Committee Members and Contributors, we have a date  that you will find of interest. According to McGraw-Hill's production contractor, the book's revised overall schedule is to be a bound book by December 6, 2000. (7/24/2000)

  • The PAGE PROOFS REVIEWER LIST is now published on this website for McGraw-Hill reference. (4/24/2000)

  • The THIRD major submission to McGraw-Hill was sent last Friday, 4/21/2000. We have sent 1,208 pages to McGraw-Hill so far. We have also updated the TABLE OF CONTENTS status of recently finished and copy-edited articles. All STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS are REMINDED to provide a black and white PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH as soon as possible. (4/23/2000)

  • The second major submission to McGraw-Hill was today. We have sent 963 pages to McGraw-Hill so far. Another 290 pages will be sent out within two weeks, with the remainder going out shortly thereafter. We have DROPPED several articles from the book because their authors did not finish them in time to support the McGraw-Hill production schedule. We have also updated the TABLE OF CONTENTS status of recently finished and copy-edited articles. All STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS are REMINDED to provide a black and white PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH as soon as possible. (4/6/2000)

  • Please note that our Copy Editor is having major difficulty opening LARGE Word *.DOC files with multiple embedded figures. These files will no longer be accepted. We request that all authors submit their figures individually. JPG's, BMP's, and GIF's are preferred, with the selected format being the one that minimizes the file size. Word documents with embedded figures are discouraged because the file sizes usually become unwieldy. The filename should follow the format "050201 Figure 1.jpg". Authors who have not finished their articles are in danger of having them DROPPED from the book at this time because there will be another MAJOR submission to McGraw-Hill on April 1, 2000. Several articles have been deleted from Chapter 7 for this reason. We have also updated the TABLE OF CONTENTS status of recently finished and copy-edited articles. (3/15/2000)

  • It is important to finalize ALL outstanding articles because there will be a MAJOR submission to McGraw-Hill on March 1, 2000. We have also updated the TABLE OF CONTENTS status of recently finished and copy-edited articles. (2/19/2000)

  • We are finalizing the copy editing and figure collection process for the articles of chapters 3, 5, 7, and 9. All authors, reviewers, and other contributors must provide their letters, honoraria, certifications, corporate titles, and affiliations to the WEBMASTER very soon to have that information included in the book.  All STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS are requested to provide a black and white PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH as soon as possible.  Refer to the TABLE OF CONTENTS for detailed status of any article. (2/15/2000)

  • We have continued to show progress in copy editing late-arriving articles in Chapters 5, 7, 9, and 14 of the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (2/5/2000)

  • There has been a HUGE amount of work by the Editorial Board and all handbook authors and reviewers over the past month. The first status update package (well over 700 book pages) is going out to McGraw-Hill tomorrow. Final packages for official McGraw-Hill copy edit will follow. We have updated / reorganized CHAPTER 3 - FACILITY LIFE CYCLE PROCESS and subchapter 5.4 MECHANICAL SYSTEMS in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (1/20/2000)

  • We have RENUMBERED Chapter 8 (Codes and Standards), Chapter 9 (Health Care Facilities), Chapter 10 (Laboratories) and Chapter 11 (Industrial and Manufacturing Facilities) as we go through the copy editing process and prepare for the first shipment of materials to McGraw-Hill. We have also updated the status of Chapters 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 13 in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (12/11/1999)

  • All STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS are requested to provide a black and white PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH as soon as possible. We have also updated the status of Chapters 5, 7, 9 and 11 in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (11/28/1999)

  • Updated CONTRIBUTOR AGREEMENTS are now linked from this page. They are the CONTRIBUTOR AGREEMENT (STEERING COMMITTEE), the CONTRIBUTOR AGREEMENT (AUTHOR), and the CONTRIBUTOR AGREEMENT (REVIEWER). All STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS are requested to provide a black and white PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH at the short Steering Committee meeting on Thursday, November 18th from 4:30 to 5:30 PM at Syska & Hennessy, One Broadway, Cambridge, MA. This is our normal meeting location and the meeting is hosted by Walter Henry, VP. We need help with a few critical items. We have  also updated the status of Chapters 3 and 5 in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (11/17/1999)

  • All STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS are requested to hold time on Thursday, November 18, 1999 for a proposed short Steering Committee Meeting. We need help with a few critical items, and all Steering Committee members are reminded to submit good quality black and white photographs of themselves for the handbook. We have  also updated the status of Chapters 3, 5, 7, and 10 in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (11/8/1999)

  • We have updated the status of Chapters 5, 6 and 8 in the TABLE OF CONTENTS.  We have also significantly modified CHAPTER 7, OPERATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND ASSESSMENTS and have modified CHAPTER 3 - FACILITY LIFE CYCLE PROCESS to reflect the further evolution of those chapters. (10/18/1999)

  • We have updated the status of Chapters 1 and 3 in the TABLE OF CONTENTS.  We have also modified CHAPTER 6, CONSTRUCTION and CHAPTER 8 - HEALTH CARE to reflect the further evolution of those chapters. (9/30/1999)

  • We have updated the status of the entire TABLE OF CONTENTS.  We have also modified CHAPTER 6, CONSTRUCTION, CHAPTER 11 - CODES AND STANDARDS, and CHAPTER 12 - EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, UNIVERSITIES... to reflect the evolution of each of those chapters. (9/25/1999)

  • I corrected the faulty links below.  All outlines have been removed from the website because they have served their purpose and are no longer current as we enter the final copy editing process. We have also updated CHAPTER 14, DATA CENTER FACILITIES in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (9/19/1999)

  • We have updated the production status of several dozen articles in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (9/7/1999)

  • We have reorganized CHAPTER 6 slightly in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. We have also updated the CHAPTER and SECTION LINKS to the Table of Contents to reflect last week's Section reorganization. (8/16/1999)

  • We have updated the status of the entireTABLE OF CONTENTS. We have also renamed SECTION ONE - FACILITIES MANAGEMENT, SECTION TWO - FACILITIES ENGINEERING, and SECTION THREE - - FACILITIES: BUILDINGS AND COMPLEXES to reflect the evolution of the Handbook's focus over the past year. Section Four has been combined into SECTION THREE, and CHAPTER 11 - CODES AND STANDARDS has been moved into Section Two. (8/12/1999)

  • We have added several new TABLE OF CONTENTS SYMBOLS to be used for final Handbook production control, and have also updated the status of CHAPTER 5 of the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (8/11/1999)

  • We have made significant changes to CHAPTER 8 of the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (8/10/1999)

  • We have made a few changes to CHAPTER 5 of the TABLE OF CONTENTS. (8/1/1999)

  • Our COPY EDITOR,  Mark Neitlich has issued the SUPPLEMENT TO THE WRITERS' GUIDE, which provides detailed instructions to authors as they put together the final Articles for copy editing. You will all note that we are now requesting documents in RICH TEXT FORMAT (*.rtf), which is the common word processing format used for conversion between different word processing programs. Most authors had conformed to our earlier requests for submissions in MS Word for Windows, but some authors could not because they do not use that software. All modern word processing software should be able to save documents in RICH TEXT FORMAT (*.RTF files), with the added benefit that Word Macro viruses should not travel with the documents either. The TABLE OF CONTENTS has been updated THROUGHOUT to reflect the final numbering of all Articles,as well as a few author and page count changes. (7/26/1999)

  • The TABLE OF CONTENTS has been updated to reflect a major reorganization of CHAPTER 3. (7/22/1999)

  • We are pleased to welcome the handbook's new COPY EDITOR,  Mark W. Neitlich, MBA to our Editorial Board. Besides being an experienced professional Copy Editor, Mark is also an engineer and previously ran his own business, where he owned and operated industrial facilities. (6/14/1999)

  • We have tentatively scheduled the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING on Tuesday, June 15, 1999, pending availability of meeting space.  Please hold that afternoon and early evening available.  We have updated theTABLE OF CONTENTS to include changes in CHAPTER 1, CHAPTER 3, CHAPTER 5, CHAPTER 6, and CHAPTER 7. (5/20/1999)

  • We have updated theTABLE OF CONTENTS to include changes in CHAPTER 1, CHAPTER 4, CHAPTER 5, CHAPTER 8, CHAPTER 11, and CHAPTER 14 (5/12/1999)

  • We have updated the STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE. We have also updated the TABLE OF CONTENTS to include changes in CHAPTER 2 and CHAPTER 5.   (5/3-5/4/1999)

  • We have updated the STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE. We have also updated the TABLE OF CONTENTS to include changes in CHAPTER 2, CHAPTER 3, CHAPTER 4, CHAPTER 5, CHAPTER 6 and CHAPTER 7 resulting from the 2/23/99 Steering Committee meeting. We have published the 2/23/99 Steering Committee Meeting Minutes on the MEETING MINUTES page.   (2/24-2/25/1999)

  • We have updated the status of draft article submissions throughout the handbook, and have made some more structural changes in the TABLE OF CONTENTS, particularly  in Chapter 6 (0602, Facility Construction Process) and in Chapter 14 (High Technology Facilities.) (2/21/1999)

  • We have updated the agenda for the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING on Tuesday, February 23, 1999. We have made a few significant changes in the TABLE OF CONTENTS: Some page counts have been reallocated to take advantage of areas where author interest has been shown and drop areas where authors have not come forward or have not produced. Additionally, 0501 (Architectural and Structural Systems,) 0504 (Mechanical Systems) and Chapter 7 have been reorganized as requested by a significant portion of the Steering Committee. The new arrangement is now in order of construction sequence (where appropriate) or in order of importance in the Editors' opinion, (also as appropriate.) We have also added even more symbology to the TABLE OF CONTENTS to get ready to stipulate the number of pages, number of figures and number of tables in every single article. These counts are necessary for numbering of figures and tables. (2/10-2/11/1999)

  • As we have been working diligently to integrate all of the first drafts, it has become very apparent that the term "subchapter," although correctly describing the individual written works, is cumbersome and awkward when used repeatedly in the draft writing. Therefore, we have decided to use the term "article" throughout the book in referencing from one author's work to another author's work. The proper use of the new term will be shown in the updated WRITERS' GUIDE.  We have updated the 12/8/98 Steering Committee Meeting Minutes and the 10/6/98 Steering Committee Meeting Minutes to indicate the latest resolutions of previous Steering Committee comments regarding possible additions to the handbook content.  This information was requested at the last Steering Committee meeting.  Older meeting notes have been moved to a new MEETING NOTES ARCHIVES Page to keep the length of the STEERING COMMITTEE MEETINGS Page reasonable. We have also added several new article outlines, which are all accessible from the TABLE OF CONTENTS.  We have provided E-mail links for our AUTHORS in the TABLE OF CONTENTS to provide them with improved tools for communication as they work together to integrate their individual articles into a coherent whole.  (1/31/1999)

  • We have finalized the agenda for the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING on Tuesday, February 23, 1999. We have also updated the TABLE OF CONTENTS page, the SUBCHAPTER REVIEWER ASSIGNMENTS page, and the STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS page within the past two weeks. You will note that all revised pages now show the latest revision date in the upper left corner, under the McGraw-Hill logo. This was added to allow all team members to determine easily whether they are working from the latest printouts. Look for more updates within the next week as a result of tonight's Editorial Board meeting.   (1/26/1999)

  • As activity on handbook coordination accelerates, it is becoming more important to be able to "surf between" (or compare) the various chapters. In order to facilitate this ability, we have provided individual CHAPTER LINKS on the bottom left hand column of this page as well as at various places in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. Try it out! (CLICK HERE to get to the easy links on the bottom of this page.)We have published the 12/8/98 Steering Committee Meeting Minutes on the MEETING MINUTES page.   (1/11/1999)

  • We have provided E-mail links for all  SECTION ONE (Chapters 1 through 3) AUTHORS in the TABLE OF CONTENTS to provide them with improved tools for communication as they work together to integrate their individual subchapters into a coherent whole.   Since this provides a definite benefit, we will be providing similar E-mail links for the other three sections as well.  If you do NOT want your email link on this website, please advise the webmaster before 1/15/1999. We have also updated the PRODUCTION SCHEDULE / SUBMISSION CALENDAR to reflect recent discussions with McGraw-Hill. (1/7/1999)

  • As discussed in the last Steering Committee Meeting, we have added a SUBCHAPTER AUTHORS NEEDED PAGE. We have reconfigured SECTION ONE (Chapters 1 through 3) of the TABLE OF CONTENTS to reflect the comments from the IFMA Review team and further input from the editorial board. We have updated several other chapters to reflect additions of new authors and the further evolution of handbook content. We have also updated the REVIEWERS PAGE to reflect input received during the Steering Committee Meeting (meeting notes to follow.) The STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE has also been updated to reflect additions of new authors and reviewers. (1/6/1999)

  • We have finalized the agenda for the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING on Tuesday, 12/8/98. We have reconfigured Chapters 2 and 3 to incorporate the results of the Steering Committee's User Review. Additionally, minor modifications have been made to CHAPTERS 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. We have also augmented the assignment of authors in the TABLE OF CONTENTS to reflect recent additions to the HANDBOOK TEAM. (12/6/98)

  • In the interest of speeding up production of the book, we also intend to hand out all of the first drafts that we have on hand of SECTION THREE (Chapters 8 through 11) and SECTION FOUR (Chapters 12 through 14) subchapters for Steering Committee review at the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING. This becomes an even more important meeting now because it includes more than 75% of the book. All Steering Committee members need to make arrangements to be present or represented on 12/8/98. The full agenda for this meeting will be posted on the website next week. As a side note, those ALL SECTION TWO, THREE and FOUR AUTHORS who have not handed in their first drafts need to get them to their editors as soon as possible so that they can be reviewed by the editors in conjunction with their companion subchapters, and then organized and copied in time for the Steering Committee meeting. We are also pleased to announce the opening of the HANDBOOK CHAT ROOM AND BULLETIN BOARD that was requested at the last Steering Committee meeting. This has been organized through the no-cost Yahoo! Clubs website. It is a "private club" in that you need to know its URL (which is http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/mcghillfaclengrghandbook and can be copied and pasted into your web browser) in order to access it. If you have not yet registered with Yahoo! Clubs, you will need to do that first. All authors, reviewers, and steering committee members are welcome to use this chat room and bulletin board for cross-fertilization of ideas in any (legal) manner desired. (11/19/98)

  • We have established the date for the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING as Tuesday, 12/8/98. We intend to hand out the first draft of the entire  SECTION TWO (Chapters 4 through 7) for Steering Committee review at this meeting. This becomes an extremely important meeting since the 550 pages of Section Two are HALF of the book. All Steering Committee members need to make arrangements to be present or represented on 12/8/98. The full agenda for this meeting will be posted on the website in a couple of weeks. As a side note, those FEW REMAINING AUTHORS (you know who you are) in Chapters 4 through 7 who have not handed in their first drafts need to get them to their editors as soon as possible so that they can be reviewed by the editors in conjunction with their companion subchapters, and then organized and copied in time for the Steering Committee meeting. (11/4/98)

  • In response to the Steering Committee's request, we have shortened this page for faster loading. All "What's New?" items added before 9/1/98 have now been moved to the WHAT WAS NEW? page. Since this home page is the most frequently visited page at this site, making it shorter should make it easier for all Handbook Team Members to get updated news.  It appears that the "gray screen" background is only an issue with Netscape users and is related to browser settings. We suggest that MS Internet Explorer be used if possible to view these pages until the webmaster is able to find another solution to this problem. (10/18/98)

  • We have published the 10/6/98 Steering Committee Meeting Minutes on the MEETING MINUTES page. Steering Committee members who were not able to attend the meeting or send a representative NEED to review these minutes as soon as possible due to the very substantive discussion that occurred regarding possible additions to the handbook scope.  Other contributors will also find this information of interest, and are welcomed to express their interest in any of the potential new topics to the Editorial Board.  (10/7/98)

  • We have substantially augmented the list of linked outlines from the TABLE OF CONTENTS page. There are now over 50 subchapter and chapter outlines posted on this website, and they are ALL available for reference by other authors through the TABLE OF CONTENTS page.  Authors who have not yet submitted outlines are strongly encouraged to get them in as soon as possible, before you get left behind! All of the first drafts for SECTION ONE (CHAPTERS 1, 2 AND 3) that are in will be distributed for IFMA User review and Steering Committee review at the 10/6/98 STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING. (10/2/98)

  • We have added a detailed list of SUBCHAPTER REVIEWER ASSIGNMENTS in the Table of Contents format for easy reference and to aid the team to identify the reviewer needs more easily. The TABLE OF CONTENTS page now shows which authors have submitted first drafts of their subchapters, and all subchapters have been numbered for easier cross-referencing. From this point on, the tracking of author-by-author production status will occur on the Table of Contents page. The previously used Excel schedule was too cumbersome for easy updating and will be dropped. Also, a few new Steering Committee members and authors, and several new REVIEWERS have been added to the appropriate pages and to the STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE Page. (9/27/98)

  • We have finalized the announcement of the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING.  All Steering Committee members and alternates are asked to attend or send a representative.  With the first drafts in, we have updated the author listing in Chapters 1, 2 and 3 on the TABLE OF CONTENTS page. We have continued to add outlines daily during the past week, with many more to come. All OUTLINES have direct links from the TABLE OF CONTENTS page. (9/12/98)

  • In order for our Authors and Reviewers who may not have copies of other published McGraw-Hill handbooks to see examples of finished work, we have uploaded SAMPLES from one other McGraw-Hill publication. This allows our Contributors to see the "look" of a final McGraw-Hill handbook. (9/7/98)

  • Although the DATE has not been finalized yet, we have added the proposed agenda of the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING.  We have updated the detailed author listing in Chapters 5, 11, 12 and 14 on the TABLE OF CONTENTS page as well as on our STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE.  And we are pleased to announce that, IN RESPONSE TO AUTHORS' REQUESTS, we have also started to add links directly to Authors' OUTLINES on the TABLE OF CONTENTS page. This posting of draft and updated OUTLINES to the website with direct links from the TABLE OF CONTENTS will continue over the next two weeks or so as the Editors receive outlines in electronic format and forward them to the Webmaster. All Authors are requested to assist us in this effort by emailing your outlines in electronic format (Word 95 DOC files are best, but we can also use TXT files or RTF files.) We have updated the OVERVIEW page to reflect Chapter 11 changes. (9/3/98)

  • We have added the names, EMail links and website links (where authorized) for our augmented Steering Committee membership to our STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE. We have also updated the list of Authors on that page and for the first time have included the initial list of names of Reviewers. We have published the 8/4/98 Steering Committee Meeting Minutes on the MEETING MINUTES page. We have updated the detailed author listing on the TABLE OF CONTENTS page. We have also added a sample Figure on the WRITING AND SUBCHAPTER FORMATTING EXAMPLES page. (8/20/98)

  • We have added the SUGGESTED BUILDING CHAPTER (8-14) CHECKLISTS/OUTLINES. These outlines will assist the authors and editors of these chapters in getting the architectural/engineering/design portions of all of the specific facility/building chapters to be more consistent in format. Subsequent to the initial posting of that page, we augmented it to further clarify its intent and limitations. (7/20/98-7/21/98)

  • We have added the announcement of the next STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING. All Steering Committee members and alternates are asked to attend or send a representative. (7/10/98)

  • We have added several EMail and website links to our STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE. (7/7/98)

  • We have updated the CONTRIBUTOR'S AGREEMENT to reflect additional protections offered to all contributors by the publisher. We have also added the PERMISSION TO COPY FORM both as a web page and as a Word for Windows document for easy use by our authors. As requested in the 6/4/98 Steering Committee Meeting, all meeting minutes will now be posted on the website on a new MEETING MINUTES page.  We have added a detailed author listing to the TABLE OF CONTENTS page. We have reformatted the WRITERS' GUIDE. We have added the NetMind URL-Minder link for the convenience of our Steering Committee Members, Authors, Reviewers and Editors. The webmaster has used this service for over a year and recommends it highly to our Handbook team members. We have moved the HANDBOOK PHILOSOPHY statement and HOW TO SUBMIT guidelines to separate pages so this page can focus on "What's New?" issues. (6/24/98 - 6/29/98)

  • Where we have received permission to do so, we have begun to add Authors'and Steering Committee members' E-Mail links and website links to the STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE. We want all contributors and their organizations to be linked from and to this website, but will do so only after you give us permission to do so. Please respond affirmatively to your editor when he contacts you.  If you wish to be linked sooner, just email The Webmaster.   We have also changed the title of Chapter 11 to "Codes and Standards." (6/18/98)

  • We have updated the website's home page to the new (small font) look for easier loading and have split the EDITORIAL CHAPTER RESPONSIBILITY OVERVIEW into a separate page. We have also added authors' names to the STEERING COMMITTEE AND CONTRIBUTORS PAGE.  We have also posted the CONTRIBUTOR'S AGREEMENT for easy reference. (6/3/98)

  • We are delighted to announce the addition of Bill Rowe, AIA PE as a member of the Editorial Board. We have split the TABLE OF CONTENTS and the SUBMISSION CALENDAR away from our home page at your request in order for both the home page and the table of contents to load faster with your browsers. We have reduced the font size on most pages for faster viewing and printing. We have also provided a new page with the first of the WRITING AND SUBCHAPTER FORMATTING EXAMPLES for you to download as reference material to speed up your writing. (5/16/98)

  • We have added a set of standard QUESTIONS FOR REVIEWERS in line with our search for top reviewers. (4/13/98)

  • We have revised Chapter 13 to be in line with the authors' intent. The topic "Designing for Maintenance" has been given its own subchapter in Chapter 7. We have identified a vacancy in our editorial board. (3/21/98)

  • We have expanded the EDITORIAL SCHEDULE to take into account the span of time between the leading edge submittals from authors and the trailing edge submittals from authors. We are in the last stage of author recruitment.
Most authors have already been selected, but we are seeking a few additional authors for selected (sub)chapters. (3/5/98)

  • Chapters 3 and 10 have had minor revisions. Designing for Maintenance has been highlighted in each of the sections of Chapter 3, and all other maintenance issues have been moved to Chapter 7 for a more focused treatment. (2/2/98)

  • A separate SYNOPSIS has been added to provide an easy overview. Chapter 6 (Construction, Modification/Renovation and Demolition/Site Restoration) has been revised. (1/15/98)

  • Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 (Electrical) have been revised. (12/23/97)

  • Chapters 1 and 3 have been revised. Chapter 5 has been reformatted in the Architectural/Structural and Mechanical subchapters. (12/10/97)

  • Chapter 6 has been reformatted. (12/7/97)
