The Original Enterprise Studio Model's Filming Stand

The new USS Enterprise exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum ("NASM") in Washington, DC, features for the first time ever the model's original filming stand. The 200+ pound model was mounted on this stand during filming. Still visible at the bottom of the stand is original blue paint/chalk dust that covered the stand to make it blend in with the bluescreen background used during the filming of the special effects. In the photo above, (left) the Enterprise model is shown on the stand from Star Trek's second pilot, and (right) at the NASM display. This original artifact was not made by the Enterprise's model-makers. It was most likely made by someone at the Howard A. Anderson Company (special effects firm).
The filming stand, along with the the eleven-foot Enterprise studio model, were donated to the NASM in 1974 by Paramount Pictures.
