___ There ain't nothin' worse than being stuck.
___ Your basic style doesn't change just because you're in a wheelchair.
___ You're going to have failures, but you're
also going to have successes. Without trying, you're
not going
to have either.
___ Some people just need more time than others.
___ It's just that different people look at it in somewhat different ways.
___ Matching Person & Technology:
You become
an investigator, a detective. You find out what the different alternatives
are
within the
constraints.
___ Physical rehabilitation is 90% mental rehabilitation.
___ ...If I come across something that needs to
be done, or that hinders me in any way, then
I'll find
a way that'll work.
___ You have to plan for the future. That's one
of the things that makes me want to get up in the
morning...
having something to shoot for.
___ I really came to believe that I can do the
same things as everyone else, even though I may
need more
time.
___ People may or may not be there when you need
them, but devices are still in the place where
you last
used them.
___ It's like 'I won this little battle,' and it builds you up.
___ If the people you're with don't keep up with
your attitudes, you change to a different group.
If you don't
want to change groups, then don't change your attitudes.
___ To me, being unsuccessful is being stuck in
a situation you can change and you don't do it,
and you're
not happy with your present situation.
___ What is life without striving for more?
___ I wish I'd had counseling regularly... If
you see someone enough, eventually you're going to
say something.
___ But that's life. You gotta play the hand you're
dealt. This is our hand.
Do you know individuals who might benefit from a service animal, but you want to make a careful assessment first?
Have you seen mismatches of service animal and person and want to make sure you prevent this from happening?
Do you wonder if a service animal will really make a difference for the better?
Do you want to be certain you have considered all the important factors affecting a person's match with a service animal?
SERVICE ANIMAL means any
guide dog, signal dog or other animal individually trained to do work or
perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including
but not limited to guiding individuals with impaired vision, alerting individuals
with impaired hearing to intruders or sounds, providing minimal protection
or rescue work, pulling a wheelchair or fetching dropped items (CRF 36.104).
------ The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
When a person is being matched with a technology or a service animal, the person needs to be involved in the process and a thorough assessment measuring all relevant occupational performance components should be used. The SAAIA was developed to accomplish this and is useful for:
medical rehabilitation centers
vocational rehabilitation agencies
universities
secondary schools
assistive technology centers
and anywhere else there is a desire to better
match person and service animal.
The SERVICE ANIMAL ADAPTIVE INTERVENTION ASSESSMENT (SAAIA) was developed to assess the quality of the match of person and service animal, target areas for additional evaluation, and highlight areas where training needs to be emphasized.
The SAAIA is a comprehensive evaluation process which takes into account the client’s:
Format:
The assessment process consists of fill-in-the-blank and checklist questions. In addition to a total score, there are the following section scores to separately assess: Knowledge of and experience with animals, activities/skills, personal/social characteristics, and requirements of service animal compared to the resources of the person.

The SERVICE ANIMAL ADAPTIVE INTERVENTION ASSESSMENT (SAAIA) was developed by Susan A. Zapf, MA, MOT, OTR, CTRS. and formed the basis of her research study: The Analysis of the Service Animal Adaptive Intervention Assessment. Susan has a master’s degree in occupational therapy from Texas Women’s University in Houston, Texas. Susan believes the primary influences on successful service animal use focus on characteristics of:
However, if the service animal and user have not been matched appropriately, the needs of both will be frustrated. It is the purpose of SAAIA to prevent just such frustration.
