This issue will be the last one in this semester.
Since the publication of our online Chinese newspaper,
we have received many e-mails from around the world to express
their support and encouragement. In only a few months, we were
linked to many Web sites, and we become one of the most important
online Chinese publications. We are still the only Chinese online
paper published by secondary school students.
You may download our online newspaper at
the following newsgroups:

Many San Francisco secondary schools participate
in the publication of this paper. They are: Thurgood Marshall
High School, Newcomer High School, Everette Middle School,
Visitation Valley Middle School and Horace Mann Middle School.
The famous star high school-Lowell High School, did a special
report on us in their school newspaper. We want to express our
appreciation to these schools.
In about two weeks, we will graduate from middle
school and leave for high school. The skills we learned
from editing our online Chinese newspaper will become our
precious treasure when we get to high school or even college.
We will not forget we are the leader of online Chinese
publications.	In this issue, you will be able to read more
articles that reflect our critical thinking and reports in
multi-perspectives. We really value your support and we will
continue providing more high quality articles to you.

May is the month of Spring and growth. In May,
we have several days to celebrate.

    Ҳ
Mother's Day is a day when all mothers get honored.
On Monther's Day, all children will plan a day scheduled
to make their mother delighted. Many like to let their
mother to have the most memorable memory through another
year. We all thank our mother to bring us to the world and
take care of us.

Cinco de Mayo is on May 4th. This is a day that Mexican
people celebrate their independance. In the Mission District
where our school is located, people from Latino community
hold a big parade with colorful costumes, lively music and
beautiful dancers to bring the Latino culture and heritage
to our diverse community.

May 27 is a special day called Memorial Day. It is a day
to honor the Americans who gave their lives for their country.
It's orignally a day that honors the military personnel who
died in the Civil War. This date was made a federal holiday
by a law that became effective in 1971.

On Memorial Day, students don't go to school. Some families
go to the cemetary to pay a visit to their ancestors or love
one who died in wars. In Washington D.C., there is a big wall
that has names printed there. It is to commemerate American
soldiers who died in the Vienam war. People go there to find
their love ones, friends, relatives and people they know or
related and worship them with flowers. Some people use a piece
of paper and a pencil to trace the name on the wall so they
can memorize the person. This day provides an opportunity for
patriotic education.

The affirmative action is a good way
to help a lot of people from being discriminated
against based on their race. I think it's a good
opportunity to keep equality, social justice,
responsibility, trust, honesty, respect, and self-control,
in our society, so no one would be better or needed to be
better than the others. Ϊ ƽ Ȩ

   ʵ I feel very worried
about our society being coated with people who are racism,
sexism, ageism, all kinds of isms and stereotyping.
      Ϊ
 ӡ
Since not everybody starts at the same point,
the affirmative action makes sure that some ethnic groups
that started at a lower point get better opportunities so
that they could compete with other people in a more equal
base. It has nothing to do with any ethnic group's pride
or culture heritage. Ȼ ÿ һ ͬ һ

               Although
Asians are minority, many of us come from families with
high education background. In contrast, students from many
other ethnic groups may come from poor families that have
no idea what higher education means to them. If we don't
encourage these students to obtain higher education by offer
them better opportunities, they and their ethnic groups will
always be poor and in lower social economic status. Neither
you nor I don't want to see some people in the society are
always lower than the others, right? Ȼ

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think the affirmative action is racism.
Its purpose is supposed to make the society more
equal, not to create unequality. Ϊ ƽ Ȩ
        Ŀ Ӧ ʹ
 ƽ ƽ
The practice in some schools and colleges
reflects the unequality: students are being punished
based on their ethnic group. You can't get in a good
school not because you are not competent but because
you belong to certain ethnic groups. This is extremely
unfair and it is an abuse of the affirmative action.
It is understandable when seeking a contract or a job
that certain minority groups are given better opportunities
because if you have qualification, you'll be able to get
the job in another company. However, admission to a school
is different. The score relects your academic ability, the
higher, the more competent. Students should be admitted based
mainly on their scores and not their color of their skin. If
you don't get that score, you are not competent to handle the
academic work at that school. Giving you more chances to get
in that school based on your color does nothing to help you
academically. һ Щ ѧ У ѧ ӳ

If you were to be born again, would you like
to be a girl or a boy? Why?

For my concern, being a boy or a girl
doesn't make any difference because both sexes
are the same. Since I'm a girl, I have three
things that I like being a girl. First, I can
wear any kind of clothes I want, including boys'.
No one would tease me. I can grow my hair as long
as I want, and tie it in any ways I want. Also,
most boys would date me or ask me out and I don't
have to worry about not getting a date.

There are three things that bothers me about
being a girl. One is pregnancy. The other is to have
a curfew with my parents of going out doors at night

hate about being a girl is that I have to do all the

they may not be able to solve it and then they get

My fouth grade teacher
      ʦ
------------------------
Japheth Long Tran (Thurgood Marshall High School)

I think every student has had an adult to look up to.
Someone they can trust and someone who has helped
them a lot. As for me, I want to talk about my fourth grade
teacher. Her name is Mrs. Gibson. She taught English at
Forestridge Elementary in Dallas, Texas. She was and is
a marvelous woman. Someone whom I have a great deal
of respect and admiration for.

The reason why I admire and love her so much is
because of what she did for and the kind of person she
made me become. In elementary school, I was a rebellious
kid who had no respect for authority. I also had a very bad
reputation because in third grade, I stole some things from
my teacher. Because of that, nobody in the school would
let me borrow anything. I also never brought the school
supplies that I needed. If I didn't have a pencil, I'd just sit
there and do nothing. I failed most of my classes except
art, music, and physical education. In fourth grade, everything
changed. I had never met anyone like Mrs. Gibson. She never
once yelled or scolded at anyone. When she would get frustrated,
she would just start to sing, then everyone would be quiet to
hear her. Her lessons were sometimes boring, but she always
tried to make them fun.

She became very special to me. I took ESL until
third grade, but my reading level was still below most
others. I remember her giving up her entire Saturday to
tutor me after my orchestra class. Once, I didn't show
up and she drove all the way to my house to tutor me!
She got me interested in books and made me join the
"Book of the Month Club." I don't know any other time
in my live where I've read so many books. She was
completely patient with me and even became one of
my parents' friends. I don't know any other English
teacher like her. She's the best I ever had.

Mrs. Gibson, Wherever you are, I just want to thank
you for all the things you did for me. I want to give you credit
for the person I've become. You mean so much to me and I
love you so much. If you're still there in Dallas, I hope someday
to visit you and thank you in person. I love you!!!!

1.	Are you a Chinese American?

Yes, but I'm also part Philippino, Mexican, and Welsh.
 My Mom was Chinese-Philippino, born in the Philippines;
my Dad was Mexican-Welsh, born here in California.

2.	Do you speak, write or read Chinese?
	     д ?
Besides knowing how to order in restaurants, curssing,
and the Chinese names of some movie stars and singers, my
Cntonese stops there. I plan to take Cantonese when I go to
college, though. Then maybe I can understand what Jacky
Cheung is singing about. :) Hmmm... and maybe I'll be able
to enjoy all the Hong Kong movies I love even better.
Shhhh...here's a secret: I have big crushes on Leslie Cheung
and Tony Leung Chiu Wai...if I knew Contonese,
I'd buy all their records:)

Growing up was definetely an experience.
In my house, it was like this: in the living room,
my grandfather would be watching the Chinese news
and talking back to the TV; in the kitchen, my
granmother and my Mom would be gossiping in Philippino,
and if my other grandma was here, I would be hearing
her talking in Spanish. I grew up in a multi-cultural
environment which I'm very thankful for. I left home
at 15, though so my family doesn't know what I do.
When I did live with my family, it was rough. There
were definetely a culture clash at home... my family
felt I was "too American" at times. I feel our house
was typically Asian though... They were a lot of
relatives coming in and out of our house, newly arrived
and needing our help. I didn't mind because it was
fun having so many people living with you, always a
lot of company. I'm first generation born here in the
States. All the adults that I know are really impressed
with what I do... I think it's because they're not familiar
with computers at all. HTML and creating web pages are
really easy.

The things I hate: People thinking
I'm weak or thinking I can't do things just because
I'm a girl. For example, some people think I
shouldn't like comics or Hong Kong action movies
because they're violent (as if!) or they're
just "boy stuff." I don't like when teachers call
on boys more in science class-this happened a lot
in my 9th and 10th grade year of school. The last
thing is the cross we have to bear every month...why
don't boys have to get cramps and feel bloated?
