These are the four predominant Indo-Pak cultural and religious organizations in Alaska. We meet frequently to celebrate our common heritage, festivals and respective religious traditions. The Cultural Association of India - Alaska is a secular organization which serves as the main community forum for Alaska's various Indo-Pak groups.
Alaska has seen dramatic growth in the population of its Pakistani, Sikh and (Asian) Indian community in recent years. Anchorage's high salaries, booming economy, warm summers and moderate winters (despite a reputation that suggests otherwise!) make it an ideal location that many of us have chosen to call home. The weather in the southern part of the State (ie. Anchorage) is roughly similar to that of southern Vermont, or Toronto. The US Department of Census estimates that there are over 700 (Asian) Indians in Alaska currently, with the vast majority living here in Anchorage.
Anchorage itself is a metropolitan city of well over a quarter-of-a-million people, with two Mosques, regularly scheduled Sikh worship, a recently established Hindu Temple (the most northern Hindu Temple in the world!), countless Christian churches of every denomination, and two excellent Indian restaurants. Cultural and entertainment activities include a large, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center which hosts Broadway shows, world class musical and theatrical performances, The Anchorage Opera, Symphony and Choir. Also around town is a sports stadium, countless movie theatres including a newly-built 16 plex, superb restaurants, a NASCAR car race track, a dragstrip - and of course, Alaska itself...which we locals joke starts just 15 miles from Anchorage!
Local retailers are the same as any other modern American city: Walmart, K-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, JC Penny, Sears, ToysR Us, Safeway, Sports Authority, Costco, Sams Club, and probably a hundred more. The public schools are highly ranked, and there are two large Universities in Anchorage, and more throughout the State.
Also - yes, you have heard correctly; Alaska is one of the few states left with no state income taxes whatsoever, and they even pay us to live here! Each man, woman & child receive a Permanent Fund Dividend each fall that is normally around $1,300 per person.
Whether you are just visiting our great State, or considering a permanent move, you are welcome to contact myself or anyone on the following links if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting you!
