In December 1998 founded association in Germany,
which wants to inform the public about and support people with
Down's syndrome.
Down's syndrome is no disease, but a variant of the human chromsomes with the chromosome 21 present in each cell three times (instead of otherwise twice).
It is usually not hereditary, but
emerged by chance.
Children with Down´s syndrome show a slower development, which extent is individually different. No one knows, which possibilities of development exist with appropriate help.
We would like to encourage affected parents, to accept their child as it is, in order to say"Yes".
We fight for these right to live and will never let the human dignity of our sons and daughters be undermind.
We think it is not acceptable, that today in 98 % pregnancy is interrupted after prenatal diagnosis of down's syndrome. You must remember, that according to the law in Germany an abortion is possible from medical indication until the moment of birth.
Therefore we will not stop
to emphasize, that extensive prenatal diagnosis with the aim of
selection of the so-called "abnormal",
is not only contrary to any ethical princples, but also will
cause an impoverishment of our society.
This is the reason why we want to address especially young people, because they are the possible future parents of children with Down's syndrome.
It is important to reduce prejudices and achieve integration of persons with Down's syndrome everywhere in our society
Our mental attitude towards persons with demand for help is essential.
Our society should not look at these people as a burden, but as an enrichment.
But they can only enrich our world, if they are allowed to be in it. It should be made possible for them to take part in normal life without any discrimination.
Integration must start in
kindergarten, go on in school and at work. For this we stand up
in public, for this we fight at the authorities.
As a symbol of integration we use a piece of puzzle. A puzzle is only complete, if all parts are available. In the same way the puzzle of human society is only complete, if persons with Down's syndrome are part of it too. All human beings belong together, no matter what the number and order of the chromosomes is.
We have put together an exhibition with pictures and reports about Down's syndrome, titled "Variety enriches our world". Everybody, who has seen it, liked it very much. Therefore we now want to show a part of it on the net.
