FAIROUZ
"After
years of thirst, a voice like fresh water has arrived. A cloud, a love-letter from another
planet: Fairuz has overwhelmed us with ecstasy. Names and figures of speech remain too
small to define her. She alone is our agency of goodwill, to which those of us looking for
love and poetry belong. When Fairuz sings, mountains and rivers follow her voice, the
mosque and the church, the oil-jars and loaves of bread; through her, every one of us is
made to blossom, and once we were no more than sand; men drop their weapons and apologize.
Upon hearing her voice, it is our childhood which is being molded anew." |

| When a voice reflects all the
richness of a culture; When a voice carries with it all the heritage of the past and opens the windows to the paths of the future; When a voice writes on the walls of eternity the story of a people that wants to survive; When a voice continues to remind its listeners of the existence of mountain villages and coastal cities, the way the waves remind the shore of the existence of the sea; Hope survives and countries continue to live, Fayrouz, you are to Lebanon what Plato is to the Greeks, what Ibn Khaldun is to the Arabs and what the Cathedral of Chartre is to France. Like Plato, you taught us about the light at the end of the tunnel; Like Ibn Khaldun, you clarified to us the essence if history and the meaning of belonging; And like the Cathedral of Chartre you lifted our eyes toward the beyond. Fayrouz, it is rare when a voice turns into a land, your voice did, and we inhabit it... May Rihani Writer and Poet |
FAIROUZ This is my small tribute to Fairouz. It is difficult to describe adequately the depth of feeling and emotion that her very name evokes to those who love her. Fairouz is more than a singer or an artist, she is the warmest memory of our childhood, our strongest passion towards our land and our home, she is the patient lover that awaits us to return from our journey and the eternal mother who holds us close. Her love is always there for us in every song she has sung. We hear her call to us, to come back to where we belong. This world has been most deeply enriched by a simple girl whose gift was fortunately recognized and allowed to blossom and grow. From most humble beginnings, she has become a legend. I have loved her since the very first song that I heard. I have sought over the years to gather every tape, CD, video of concerts, plays and movies and every article printed about her that I could find in order to know her more completely. Fairouz is the flame in a lantern that radiates pure golden light illuminating our souls and nourishing our spirits. She is the green of a mountain valley and the warm breeze that animates the leaves of the very Cedars of Lebanon. She is our glorious past and our hopeful future. Fairouz is the ambassador of the Arab people to the world and we call her "the neighbor of the moon". She has sung in capital cities throughout the world and has received countless awards and acclamations for her art and her humanity. In May of 1999, Fairouz performed at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Here is an article about the concert. Click here for a few scenes of Fairouz taken from the concert video. It was my first time to have seen her perform live and it was literally breathtaking to actually see her on stage in an auditorium with over 17,000 people all in complete rapture as she sang that night. Fairouz was invited in August 1999 as one of twelve international personalities to participate in the 50 year commemorations of the Geneva Convention by the International Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland. Fairouz and her composer son Ziad have agreed to perform in the famous Beiteddine Festival in Lebanon this year. Fairouz is often referred to as "Our Ambassador to the Stars" and "Neighbor of the Moon" for her celestial voice and angelic presence. I have always wished to meet Fairouz and just say to her, thank you so very much for the all the joy and beauty that you have given my life. I hope that Fairouz will know that her devoted fans truly honor and love her. I have seen the outpouring of emotion that she can evoke and the attachment that binds us to her in a sense that defies description. Fairouz is our queen, our noble lady and a beacon of purest love. If you do not yet know of Fairouz, please take some time to explore the vast ocean of song and performance that exists from the years of her career. Do not let the language be an obstacle, just listen and allow her rich voice to enter you. The depth and warmth will captivate and entrance you. Then can one understand the phenomenon that is Fairouz. I invite you to visit Fairouz.com to learn more about the greatest of all artists Shafik al-Mansur |
