Map by Andrej Kolar using SeeYou® software. Return to Kitty Hawk Information -- Version 6.0 updated June 17, 2003For the latest on the big transcontinental glider race go tohttp://www.ssaregion12.org/rtkh/.Daily RegistrationDaily registrations are available. Just show up on the day of the local launch. Since it is a sanctioned event we need to see your pilots certificate, proof of insurance, proof of SSA Gold Distance or proof you are on seeding list. Please try to contact the local club so they have some idea of how many folks to expect. RouteThe following are the planned legs for the route: [Note: I have included AirNav links that provide details of each airport including aerial photos of many airports. AirNav also has links to local motels.] Also, except for June 19 at Crystal and July 4 at Kitty Hawk, the departure date for each leg is subject to change depending on the soaring weather. We will use the spare days to attempt to optimize tasking for the weather and minimize pilot and crew fatigue. [Note: Our original plan was to start on June 17 with a July 2 arrival in Kitty Hawk. When the National Park Service asked us to be the big event on July 4 we moved the plan two days. Sorry for any confusion. Legs are subject to change.] Jim Payne is handling the western legs (through Dallas). John Murray is handling the eastern legs. For each leg I would appreciate a local volunteer who can go through each turnpoint file and delete the unsuitable airports. On June 18, Crystal Gliderport will be open for pilots wishing to practice. Leg One will depart from Crystal Gliderport near Llano, CA on June 19 (or June 20 if we have a weather delay). Leg Two will depart from Jean Airport, Jean, NV on June 20 (or June 21 if we have a weather delay). Leg Three will depart from Estrella Gliderport near Maricopa, AZ on June 21 (or June 22 or June 23 if we have weather delays). Leg Four will depart from Las Cruces Airport, Las Cruces, NM on June 22 (or June 23 or June 24 if we have weather delays). Leg Five will depart from Hobbs Industrial Airport, Hobbs, NM on June 24 (or June 25 or June 26 if we have weather delays). Leg Six will depart from Texas Soaring Association Airport near Midlothian, TX on June 25 (or June 26 or June 27 if we have weather delays). Leg Seven will depart from Silvercreek Gliderport near New Douglas, IL on June 27 (if perfect weather), June 28 (more likely) or June 29 (if we have weather delays). Leg Eight will depart from Indianapolis Terry Airport, IN on June 28 (if perfect weather), June 29 (more likely) or June 30 (if we have weather delays). Right click on the following link and save to a file: The following is a Zip file that has SeeYou® maps for each leg. Since Andrej made the files we have deleted the stop at Forrest City, changed the destination of the leg from Dayton, and added the leg to Edenton. Right click on the following link and save to a file: Pilots need the following sectional charts: Los Angeles, Phoenix, Albuquerque, El Paso, Dallas-Fort Worth, Memphis, Kansas City, St Louis, Cincinnati, Washington, and Charlotte. I have had excellent service when ordering charts from http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/chart/4.asp Motel ListThe following list of motels was provided by Martha Jacobs: Note for International PilotsHank Marlowe reports: We [his import company] have agreed to clear two gliders from Germany through U.S. Customs for pilots flying in the RTKH contest. Customs clearance is rather simple. I called the FAA about any problems in flying them and I was told the following: If the glider is registered in Germany and the pilot has a German pilot certificate it can be flown here. A pilot can not fly a U.S. registered aircraft without a U. S. pilot certificate. The process for obtaining a U.S. pilot certificate based on a foreign certificate has changed. The pilot must apply in advance see http://registry.faa.gov for details. Also, through the efforts of Judy Lincoln and the SSA the FAA is granting waivers to FDC NOTAMs 2/5128, 2/5319, and 2/5167 on a case-by-case.
