Design by Janelle Schlossman circa 1978
This pattern is fast and easy. The only stitches used are single crochet and chain 1. (That open stitch pattern that I like :-) I used a heavy worsted wt. yarn that I got in a bargain bin with a generic label on it. Approx. 27 to 28 oz. I`ve made this one in the past with Red Heart Classic Yarn and also holding 2 strands of sport wt. yarn together. (The gauge and yarn amounts will be slightly different when you substitute) Keep in mind if you want to add fringe you will also need more yarn.
This poncho will fit sizes L up to 3X Note: I designed this poncho for a size L but My hubby convinced me to try this one on (I haven't made these since the70`s) It will fit up to a size 3XL but it will be shorter. Some people like the shorter length ponchos (their calling them ponchettes) and I bet it would be nice to add fringe to the shorter length.
You will need a size M crochet hook.
Gauge: 2 rows in pattern = 1" 5 stitches in pattern = 2"
Size of Rectangle: The first one I made with heavy worsted was about 36" x 24". I made another one with a wool blend yarn and the rectangle was about 39" x 25".
Instructions: (Make 2 rectangles) Loosely chain 86. 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch) across. Ch 1, turn. (85sts) 2: Sc in 1st sc -the first stitch is in the same stitch as the turning ch; (ch 1, skip next ch 1 space, sc in next sc) across. Ch 1, turn. 3 - 46: Repeat row 2. Fasten off at end of row 46.
Sew pieces together at points A and points B according to the illustration.
Work 1 round of sc around neck edge. All done :-)
