Lacet Stitch Poncho

                                    Lacet Stitch Poncho

Design by Janelle Schlossman 2004

Those of you who like filet crochet will recognize the Lacet stitch. I made this

poncho for a child size large/misses size small but made it a tad

larger than those measurements. It has a higher neckline. If someone uses this pattern

I would love some feedback as to the fit. :-)

Materials:

* Approximately 6 1/2oz of worsted wt. (I used Red Heart classic in the color Aran)

* Size L hook

Gauge: 2 rows = 1 3/4" and 7 sts in pattern (or one Lacet) = 2 3/8"

The size of each rectangle is 24 1/2" wide x 17" high

Chain 70.

1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch3, turn. (69sts)

2: Dc in next sc, (ch2, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch2, skip 2 sc, dc in next sc)

across. Dc in last sc. Ch3, turn.

3: Dc in next dc, ch5, (skip next 2 ch, sc, and 2 ch) dc in next dc,

(ch5, dc in next dc) across. Dc in last st. Ch3, turn.

4: Dc in next dc, (ch2, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch2, sk 2 ch, dc in next dc) across.

Dc in last st. Ch3, turn.

5-17: Repeat rows 3 & 4 for pattern; ending with a row 3. At end of row 17,

    ch1, turn.

18: Sc in each dc and in each ch st across.

Fasten off and make a second rectangle exactly the same.

Sew rectangles together according to the graph below.

Neck:

Join the yarn in any unworked st to the side of a seam at the neck edge.

Ch1, work a row of sc in each st around the neck. When you get to a seam;

sc the last st before the seam and the first st after the seam together. Join

with a sl st to beginning ch1.

Bottom Edge:

You can leave the bottom edge as is and add fringe or you can work a

round of sc first and then add the fringe.

If you sc along the bottom edge work a sc-ch1-sc in each point. For the

poncho in the photos I worked a round of sc, put a fringe in the ch1 of each

point and then put fringes in every other sc around.

_______________________________________________________________

This poncho is basically a big block of  Lacet stitches but I added a row of sc at

the bottom and top and an extra dc at each end of the rows to make it simpler for

people not used to using filet crochet charts. If you wanted to just do the Lacet sts

alone here is a chart:

   For my gauge with an L hook each Lacet st is 2 3/8" w & 1 3/4" h.

Each Lacet is 6 sts wide plus 1. Each Lacet is 2 rows high. The base ch

is a multiple of 6 plus 1. For the chart above, chain 67. Ch 3 which counts

as 1st dc. Then ch 3 more and sc in 9th ch from hook.

To make a larger poncho add more Lacet blocks to the chart and to make

a smaller one of course delete blocks from the chart. Below is a large chart

you can use to adjust the size if you like. The tricky part in making these kind

of poncho patterns (with two rectangles) larger or smaller is getting the neck

size right.

You could also do a gauge swatch with a smaller hook if you want a

tighter stitch pattern. :-)
