'How can a sky stay gray for two months straight?' Mulder wondered as he gazed up at the overcast sky. No sun during the day, no moon at night. It was enough to drive anyone crazy, especially him. Leaning back on the bench he was sitting on, he watched as three men dressed in tailored suites made their way towards him.

"You shouldn't look so sad, son." the older of the three men said.

Mulder stood up. "Is there a reason that you and you're associates have to keep harassing me?" he snapped. "Or is it too much to ask that I be left alone for five minutes." he watched as Anson approached.

"Fox." Anson said, stopping in front of him. "These are my associates. I expect you to treat them with as much respect as you have for me."

"Then I guess that I won't have very much respect for them." Mulder said, grinning. He didn't know what he was doing. . never once in all the years he had known this man had he ever had enough guts to speak his mind. He just couldn't take what they were doing to him anymore. He was beginning to feel like he was in a prison. They claimed that they wanted his work, but they wouldn't let him attend their meetings or speak his thoughts. He wasn't allowed to leave their headquarters without an escort, they were basically holding him prisoner. Someone was always watching. Men were everywhere.

"Fox, what's bothering you?"

"I'm in a prison." he replied. "You want my work, and you refuse to use it. What are you so afraid of? I was never going to expose you."

"We eliminate all threats." one of the other three men said.

"Then why am I still alive?" Mulder asked.

"You're needed." another answered

"For what?"

"To make sure that all future threats are eliminated" the third man replied.

"I'm not going to become an assassin, I'm not killing anyone." he shook his head. "If that's what you want me to do, you might as well kill me now."

"You don't have to kill anyone." Anson assured him.

"Then what the hell do you want from me. I've been here four months and I still don't know what you want from me."

Anson motioned to the men behind him. "Do you know why these three men attended our meeting today?"

Mulder shook his head.

"We were discussing you." the third man answered. He held out an envelope. "This is your assignment. You say that this is a prison, here's your chance to get out." he paused. "Once you're assignment is completed you are free to return to Washington DC, to the bureau and even back to that partner of yours, if you like. If you chose not to take our offer you can remain here, in this prison, as our prisoner. You can accept or deny, the choice is yours."

"Can I ask what the assignment is before I decide?" Mulder asked hopefully.

Anson shook his head and placed a gently hand on his sons shoulder. "That's where the trust comes in. You can trust us that the assignment doesn't involve killing and go with it or you can do as my associate said and deny it and remain here, in this prison."

He'd do anything for Scully. Leaving her behind was the hardest thing he'd ever done. He had vowed he'd get back to her, and this seemed to be his only way. He knew what had to be done. "I'll accept the assignment." he said, and headed off towards his car.

"Agent Mulder." PAUSE "You have decided to return to Washington DC. On arrival you will be greeted by a man, one of our branch associates. Go with him, he will take you to you're apartment. The following morning our associate will accompany you to the bureau. Assistant Director Walter Skinner will not know of your return in advance. Present to him, the reinstatement papers, with the simple explanation that you would prefer not to answer any questions." PAUSE "He will in return, once again, place you with Special Agent Dana Scully. Her present partner, Special Agent Michael Cameron, will then be transferred back east. Do not, and I repeat, do not tell her anything of where you have been. She will be eliminated if necessary." PAUSE "She is your partner, not your lover or confidant. A monthly report is expected. We will be watching you."

Mulder pushed stop on the recorder. He had played the message over and over, trying to figure out what his next step was. Picking up the letter, he quickly read it again.

Attention: Fox Mulder

In 1994 a new program, under the power of Anson Mulder,
was erected with in the FBI, CIA, NSA and Secret Service. The
program was designed to select agents from each agency with the
notion to train them as associates. All areas were successful until
1995, when a security breech was brought to our attention. Special
Agent Alex Krycek was this breech.
You have been chosen to fill Agent Kryceks position. Your
assignment is to reclassify the X-Files, have Special Agent Dana
Scully removed of her duties and to eliminate all known threats.
Extreme measure may be taken in all counts. You're airline ticket
for tomorrow afternoon, a set of keys to your apartment and car,
and money for expenses are enclosed. We will be watching.

Mulder angrily crumpled up the letter and threw it across the room. He was about to do exactly what Scully had begged him not to. He was about to become one of them. A spy. A rat. All of the above. Reaching over to the table he picked up his nearly empty bottle of vodka. Once again he was breaking another promise.

"Damn it!" he screamed, slamming the bottle against the wall of his room. His head was pounding. All he wanted to do was sleep. . .

"Fox" a soft voice rang out through his dreams darkness.

Mulder suddenly found himself standing in a field, surrounded by small cottages and wild flowers. The air was warm against his cheeks and all signs of his drunkenness had disappeared. He felt so peaceful. "Where am I?" he called out to an image that was approaching. There was something so familiar about the woman that approached him, but he couldn't put his finger one it.

"Hello." the woman said softly. "I don't have much time."

"Melissa." he asked, unsure of whether his eyes were telling the truth. "Is that you?"

The woman smiled and nodded. "Who else would be haunting your dreams?"

"No one." he replied.

"You need to go home to Dana." Melissa instructed. "I can't tell you why, but she needs you now, more than ever."

"Is she all right? "

She shook her head. "No. She needs you."

"I'm going home."

Melissa nodded. "I know, but you aren't going to be there for her." she examined her sister's partner carefully. "You're eyes are sad. You don't have to do what they want you to do. You can quit, you and Dana, and move far away where they will never find you."

"I can't do that." Mulder said sadly. "They'll always know where I am. I can't do that to Scully. I can't put her at risk that way."

"I know you, Fox. I watched you look over her when she was in the hospital, dying, after her abduction. You refused to let us turn off the machines. My mother and I could tell that you couldn't be with out her. And I know that you can't be with out her, Fox. Remember that, it's your defense. If you forget that, you will be without her. No matter where you go or where you turn."

"Will they kill her?"

"No."

"How do you know" he asked.

"I don't, know." Melissa answered truthfully. "But as long as you are there to protect her they won't hurt her. If you remember what I told you. . . " she paused, seeing that he didn't. " I told you that you were her strength. She's also
yours. . ."

"How long will it be before we can be together?"

"Time is like a heartbeat here, it isn't relevant and for me to tell you a year or a month I'd be wrong." she repeated what she had told her sister "If you keep your faith in God, life will be easier in whole. Don't lose sight of what's important, Fox. I've watched my sister struggled with her faith more that I ever did in my life time, and I've watched you place your trust in her hands. Don't be afraid to be with her. If you wait to long your time will be up."

"Why is it so hard for me to keep sight of what's important?" Mulder asked, asking the same question Scully had. "Sometime I just wish that I was here and not on earth to suffer."

"No you don't?"

"Why?" he asked. "I should be dead. I should have died. I keep being spared, though. Why am I so different from you or anyone else who has died?" he looked around at his surroundings. "You didn't do anything wrong. They were trying to kill Scully, because of me, and they got you instead. I should be here instead."

"You don't understand." Melissa observed. "The difference between you and I, and Scully and I, is that it was my time to die and not yours or hers." she motioned around her. "This place is for those who have completed their missions in life. You have not complete yours yet. You have to go back to Scully. . .and take care of what needs to be done with her. Then you can die."

"What has to be done?"

Melissa laughed. "Fox, you will wake up not remembering this dream, so I'll tell you this much." she moved in closer and pressed her lips against his ear. "You were meant to have a child. Your time isn't now and it won't be for a while."

"A child?" he asked. "Scully can't have children. . .and I'll never have a child with another."

Tears filled Melissa's eyes. "You will have a child." she whispered, pulling back. "And when the time comes you will accept it. You and Scully."

"How do you know that?"

"Soul Mates belong together." she answered, fading slightly. "My times is gone. Remember your soul is good and strong. It thrives for the truth and the only way you can ever sell it to Satan is if my sister goes along beside you and I know her, Fox, she'd never go along beside you. You will always be together, in life and in death."

"Why?" he asked as she disappeared. "How do you know we'll always be together?"

"Like I said before." he heard her voice in the wind. "Soul mates belong together. It's your legacy, it's your *legend*."

Mulder awoke suddenly to the sound of his alarm clock. It was morning. . . As quickly as he could, he jumped out of bed and started packing. He was going home. And with no recollection of his dream he headed off to the bathroom.

The plane was about to land, but Mulder was anything but excited. He was betraying Scully, not through words, actions or emotions, but through trust. Would she except after being gone for four months or would the trust be lost? He almost hated to think about it. What awaited him?

"Sir?"

Mulder jumped at the sound of the flight attendants voice. "Yes?"

"We'll be landing shortly." the attendant said. "Could you please put your seat up?"

He nodded. He was home.
