The Fates Wrath Saga III
When Love Be Done 1-8
By: Jenn Nistor

Disclaimer: Hi Everyone! This is a sequel to "Peace, Be Still" and "The Judgment of Fate". There will be one more story in this series entitled "The Battle of One." Okay! Now down to business....the characters Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Walter Skinner, The Cancer Man, The Lone Gunmen, Margaret Scully, X, ect......are the property of Chris Carter, 1013 productions and I guess Fox Network. No copyright of infringement is intended, so please don't sue me.

Authors Note **IMPORTANT**:
1.)This is the REVISED story. I have not made too many big changes and to understand the sequel that will be coming out later, you will need to read this edition or the first edition of my story. Sorry for the inconvenience.
2.)My spelling is terrible and so is my grammar. I decided that my editor wasn't doing anything for me so I did with out on this story. Like you can really tell the difference.
3.)This is a Mulder and Scully romance. SO if that kind of things turns you off and makes you sick, go back now because you have been warned.
4.)There is some violence and a lot of both Mulder and Scully angst. It picks up shortly after where "The Judgment of Fate" left off, give or take a couple of weeks. "When Love Be Done" is similar to "Peace, be Still" in the sense of Scully thinking back, so bare with me, you'll eventually understand what's going on.
5.)This story could pretty much end the series, I guess you could say that this three, possibly four, set series takes place in an alternate universe set right before the season final. So I guess that means Talitha Cumi doesn't exist, but these stories make references to several episodes before it.
6.)This is falls under the series "Fate's Wrath." that title covers "Peace, Be Still" and the Judgment of Fate."

Summery: REVISED Mulder's search for his sister continues, while Scully, still recovering from her recent abduction must face the truth about her relationship with her partner and her mother's relationship with her superior. Skinner decides to assign another agent to the X-File division and as the two agents, not including the new one, come closer to discovering the real truth they must also face the fact that the truth may not be what they expect and hope for.

"To the day of Judgment,
Through the wrath of sin,
The truth be told
Not, never again.

When love be forgot,
On ends, when fates last hand be played
To the kingdom end of judgment
May the wrath of mortal men be shed

The quest sought by power
A search composed of faith.
Some single hundred tears may fall
With the lust of human hate.

With trials and trials and trials of fate
The judgment of life is set to date
As the hour glass may tip and turn
We are judged when love be done.

JFK Memorial Hospital
Washington DC
11:21 P.M.

Dana Scully paced impatiently outside the intensive care unit at JFK memorial Hospital. It was all happening again. The pain, the loneliness, the fear and the loss. She felt as though her heart was breaking all over again.

Hearing a roar of voices, Dana turned around to find her mother followed by ten or fifteen doctors. "Mom." she said weakly. She was too tired to put forth anymore effort at being cheerful. All she could do was let down her defenses and act human, something that she hadn't been doing for the past five months.

"Where are they!" Margaret Scully cried. "What happened?!" tears were streaming down her cheeks as she spoke. "Dana please. Where is he."

Dana shrunk away from her mother and backed up deeper into the shadows of the hospital waiting room. The look her mother had given her was one of anger and betrayal. She suddenly felt the emptiness returning, there was nothing for her to say. Her mother was blaming her and she new that her mother had every reason in the world too.

"Mom I'm so sorry." she whispered. She wasn't even sure her mother heard her. "He was trying to save Mulder. He was protecting them."

Margaret Scully shook her head and moved in closer to her daughter. "Where the hell were you?" she screamed. "You should have been with them. None of this would have happened if you had been with them instead of hiding from them."

"No...." Dana choked as a sob raked through her body. "I was trying so hard. I wasn't hiding from them. I made a big mistake and will regret it for the rest of my life." she covered her face with her hands. "Hopefully that wont me to much longer." she mumbled, praying that her mother had not heard her last comment. She wished she could take what she had said back, but it had slipped out before she had anytime to think about what she was saying.

Her mother had indeed heard her last comment. She grabbed her daughter by the arms and forced her too look up. "All three of them......" she whispered. "Dana it was all three of them and all you are thinking about is yourself."

Dana pulled away and sat down. "I guess that your right in thinking that this is all my fault." she whispered. "Maybe if I hadn't been so blind or jealous this would never have happened." she shook her head and took in a deep breath before continuing. "But jealousy shouldn't be an excuse. I let my fear get the better of me and I guess that I was afraid of Fate."

Margaret looked down at her daughter and held out her hand. "I don't blame you, Dana." she whispered, knowing that it was the truth. "They'll be fine. I know it deep down inside. None of this could have been stopped. I was wrong to put the blame on you." she frowned. "I'm just kind of regretting that you ever took that job with the X-Files."

"Mom, you just said that nothing could have stopped what happened, and nothing could have changed what I was going to do with my future." she sighed. "I wish that the last five months could be erased, but they can't. They can't..........."

"Agent Scully." Assistant Director Walter Skinner said, poking his head into her basement office. "Can I speak to you a moment?" He gave her a quick side long glance before entering.

Dana Scully looked up and nodded, "Sir." she said. "What can I do for you?" she couldn't help but notice how nervous he seemed, but she didn't question it. "Is something wrong?" she looked over at Mulder's vacant chair. "Did Agent Mulder do something that we'll both regret? Because if he did I want you to know that I had no part in it what's so ever."

Skinner laughed and pulled up a chair so that he was sitting across from her. "No Agent Mulder hasn't done anything wrong. I told him to assist Agent Kelly on a recent homicide in Novac, California; so he's at home packing." he leaned back. "You didn't have to come in so soon after your........." he paused. "Your abduction."

Dana laughed. "Sir, that was over a week ago. I'm perfectly capable of working. I wasn't hurt, maybe a little emotionally, but nothing too serious." she motioned to Mulder's empty desk. "I just wish that Mulder would stop treating me like I'm going to break."

As much as she hated to admit it, she wasn't too happy about working with Mulder again. Although they had mended some of their fences, they were still having problems getting used to one another again.

Skinner nodded, "I just figured that you'd be spending time with your mother. I know that you two haven't spoken in quite a while."

"How did you know that?" Dana asked curiously.

Skinner glanced around uncomfortably, but quickly went on to business, ignoring her question. "I came down here to tell you that you should be expecting another partner." He braced himself for her out burst.

"What!" Dana cried. "There's no way that your going to separate Mulder and I."

"Agent Scully!" Skinner yelled. "Would you let me finish before you get all worked up." She nodded and the assistant director continued. "I never said that I was going to split you and Mulder up......but I feel that you two could use a little more help; so I've assigned Agent Erin Evan, formally from the New York Bureau, to assist you on your investigations. I believe that she will be a big help to you and your research."

Dana nodded, but didn't like the idea of a stranger coming in and learning everything that they knew. Even though she and Mulder weren't on the best of terms and had decided to take there personal relationship slowly, along with there partnership, she still felt very close to him and trusted him more than anyone else. She had almost forgotten that Mulder had ever been gone. The idea of having someone else around made her feel uneasy.

It almost seemed like Mulder had been there with her all along. The last three years seemed to have been erased. She was no longer angry at him for what he had done, she wasn't even sure that she had ever been angry at him. So much of their past had been forgotten, it was almost like they were getting to know one another again.

"After your recent disappearance." Skinner said bringing her back to the present. "I have come to believe that you and Mulder need help whether you want it or not. I'm sure that you'll come to appreciate it in the future."

Dana nodded and picked up the phone. "Sir would you mind leaving me alone......I have to speak to Mulder and it's sort of private."

Skinner nodded and stood up. "I'll see you later Agent Scully." he said, then left.

Dana waited until she was sure he was gone before she dialed the number, not Mulder's number. She let it ring four times before the answering machine picked up.

"Hello, if you have the right number then you know who this is and you know what to do so do it and we'll do are best to get back to you." the greeting said then beeped.

"Guys,....." Dana said. "It's me. You haven't gotten back to me about the *package* and I really need some information on it. Mulder and I haven't had much time to even think about it and we're about to be stuck with another agent." she laughed. "Probably a spy and I need the 411 on it. So please call me." she quickly hung up and grabbed her coat of her chair.

She was about to leave when Mulder rushed in. "Scully." he said a bit urgently. "What's this about Skinner assigning someone else to the X-Files division?" his worry was evident.

Dana smiled, almost glad that he showed that much concern. "Don't worry." she assured him. "He won't be separating us. He's assigned another agent to assist us. She's apparently from the New York Bureau and I guess that she must have shown some interest in our work or she would never have been transferred here to work with us."

"Is she clean?" Mulder asked. He was almost afraid to have someone else working with them after what had happened with Krycek he only wanted Scully to work with him. Sure he'd had other partners after he and Scully had been separated, but he never truly trusted them. He always knew that he would never trust anyone the way her trusted Scully.

"I don't know." she replied. "I guess I can run a check on her, but I don't think that we should have to." she laid a hand on his shoulder. "I think it's time we start trusting other people besides each other. I don't think every agent in the FBI is like Alex Krycek was, I admit that I do believe that there are some agent's working for *them* but not every agent. So we have to assume they're clean until they do something to show us that we have a reason to suspect them."

Mulder nodded. "I guess your right." he admitted. "I just came down to tell you that I'm leaving for Novac and won't be back for a week or so." he smiled. "You think you can handle everything with out me?"

Dana laughed and punched him playfully in the arm. "Would you stop treating me like I'm going to break and shatter into a million pieces. I'm sure Skinner will be introducing me to our new agent so I won't be alone."

"Okay." Mulder mumbled. "Now do I get a hug or are you going to make me wait until I get back."

"Sorry." Dana said giving him a quick hug. "Be careful."

"I will." he assured her and made his way back down the dark hall.

"Sedate her." the Cancer man demanded as two young military officers brought in a young woman. "She must not remember anything that happened. Nothing."

One of the officer nodded and quickly made his way down the hall. "Where should I put her." the other one asked.

The woman looked around wearily but made no motion to move. They had handcuffed her and gagged her. She couldn't even remember who she was or where she was or where she had come form. She could remember nothing.

"Put her in Block D." some one else instructed.

The Cancer Man turned around to face a woman in her late twenties. She was wearing a short nit skirt and a green tank top that matched the color of her eyes. "Who are you?" he asked angrily. "Who let you in here?"

The woman smiled. "I have come to help you." she whispered. A slight English accent was evident as she spoke. "If you turn me down or send me away I assure you that you will regret it."

"Is that a threat?" the man asked. "Because I assure you that I do not take well to threats."

The woman laughed and pulled out a large stack of papers. "I will need these things if I am to take over your position." As she reached out a small bracelet fell down her arm.

"Excuse me?" the Cancer Man asked glancing at the list of items. Shaking his head he glanced back at the woman. "I don't know who you are or where you came from but let's get one thing straight." he took a drag on his cigarette. "I have no intention of giving up my position so who ever informed you that I was leaving has made a huge mistake."

"No one has informed me of anything." she said. "But when you die I will finish everything you have started and let me assure you that I will get what I want." she grabbed the cigarette from the man and through it to the ground. "Those things will kill you." she laughed and quickly made her way towards the young military officer and the woman. "Follow me." she instructed and disappeared into the shadows.

The Cancer Man looked down at the smoldering cigarette on the ground then back to the woman who had just led the to officers away. 'They are on to me.' he thought grimly. 'All of the arrangements have already been made.'

"Guys......what's the deal?" Dana asked her friends. "I've called at least a dozen times the past five days and you haven't told me anything. I want to know what is exactly on that disk before I go crazy."

Frohike exchanged glances with his buddies and turned back to Dana. "We've been looking at this disk..." he said carefully. "But there's something wrong."

Dana groaned and leaned back against the wall. "What?" she was almost afraid to ask. "What's wrong with it. Did it get ruined or...." he voice trailed off as she saw the screen.

The computer screen contained a list of names. Each name had a signature by it and each signature had a finger print next to it. "Okay." she said. "So it's a bunch of names and finger prints....big deal." she shook her head. "What's so weird about it?"

"Nothing." Byers answered. "But when we ran the names through a decoder to unlock the files this disk contained we got some very weird combinations."

"Like what?" Dana asked sitting down next to them.

Langly typed something and a second later a huge X flashed up on the screen. "We can't get past this." he mumbled.

"I don't under stand."

Frohike nodded and sighed. "We can't remember how we originally got into the files." he admitted. "We've tried a million things but each one of these people......" he pointed to the names. "Had some sort of pass word and unless you type them all in you can't access the files."

"Guys!" Dana cried out in frustration. "Maybe there obvious words. You have to try to remember what they were." she paused. She jumped when an idea suddenly hit her "Wait!"

"What?" Byers asked.

"When Agent Crawford got these files he must have found another way in." she pushed her way in front of Langly and sat down. "Maybe there's some kind of back door that you guys found. It's not like were hacking into the Defense Departments computer again. The files are here we just have to......" she clicked on one of the names and a small box popped up.

*Access Code*

Dana typed in *Access Files>* and another small box popped up.

*Access Denied.*

She thought a moment then typed in. *Access X-Files*

After a few seconds a window containing hundreds of icons and file names flashed up. "We are in." she said proudly. She laughed at the expression the three men wore. "Guys." she said. "What's wrong."

Frohike shook his head in embarrassment. "Nothing." he replied. "It's just that I never thought you were that smart. I mean I knew you were good looking but a woman with brains and looks is so hard to come by."

Dana shook her head, ignoring Frohikes comment.. "Okay guys." she said. "I have to run. You look at the files and call me when you feel that your ready to explain it. Mulder won't be back for about a week so you'll be dealing with just me."

"I rather deal with you than Mulder any day." Frohike said. Then added, "Your so much better looking and I'll bet you kiss better."

Dana laughed and picked up her purse. "Try not to open the door to strangers, okay boys."

"Mom." Dana whispered.

Margaret Scully glanced up from the forms she was filling out. "Yes?" she asked. "Are you all right Dana. You look terrible."

She shook her head and sat down. "Why haven't they told us anything?" she asked. "When they brought in Mulder they took him directly to surgery, I don't understand why they haven't said anything."

Margaret took her daughters hand. "I know how you feel. I tried to find out how Walter was doing but the nurses kept telling me that they didn't know yet." she sighed. "We've only been married three months Dana. I don't think that I can live with out him." tears began to stream down her cheeks.

Dana turned away. She hated to see her mother in so much pain. She thought back to when here sister had been shot. She knew that her mother had blamed her for it and no matter how much she tried she could never take that pain away.

"I'm sorry." she whispered. "Umm....maybe I should leave." she stood up.

Margaret was about to protest but stopped when she saw the look in her daughters eyes. "Dana." she cried. "Don't do anything you'll regret. Mulder will be fine. He's been shot before and lived.....he won't leave you now."

"Mom.....last time he was shot he left me." she tugged at her hair praying that the pain from her pulling would some how vanish the emptiness inside of her, but it didn't. "He left me..."she repeated. "He can't leave me now. God it's all of my fault! I've taken away everything that you've loved and everything that Mulder's loved." she fell to her knees. "I took away his truth and your future."

"Dana." Margaret whispered kneeling down to comfort her daughter. "Please stop this. You haven't taken anything from me. Actually you've given me the faith that I have now."

"No!" Dana screamed. She jumped up and ran out into the cold night. Snow had just begun to fall over the once peaceful earth. She could just hear the distant wale of sirens beating in her ears.

'Probably the fires.' she thought weakly, smelling the faint stench of smoke in the air.

Numbness was now taking over the pain. She could no longer feel the dull ache that plagued her heart. Silently she walked over to a bench under a near by tree and sat down. She didn't care about the snow, or about the night's sudden darkness. Her mind was drawing up blanks every time she tried to remember what happened.

Looking up into the nights dark sky she did something that she thought she would never do again. "God." she whispered. "Please.....please take the pain from Mulder and Walter and Samantha. I've struggled with my faith and my sciences and I've always debated life, but now....." she looked down at her hands. "Now that I know the truth and the answers that follows most of those truths, I pray that they are kept safe. Fox Mulder is my truth. Not the existence of other beings or the justice of their captors. I know that I'll never truly be Mulder's truth, but I pray that you keep his truth, Samantha, safe too." she took in a ragged breath and pulled her knees to her chest. "Please hear me."

She was about to cry, but something, somewhere stopped her. She felt the burden and pain subside and lighten a little. Although the pain was still there, the loss was gone. But it wasn't the loss of Mulder that had disappeared, it was loss of her sister. The pain of her sister's death had suddenly disappeared leaving her with a sense of hope. It almost felt like her sister had moved through her, lightening her load.

Resting her head on the back of the bench, Dana leaned back and sighed. "Thank-you." she whispered knowing that her sister could hear her. "Good-bye Missy."

"Agent Scully." a tall woman, in her late twenties asked walking into the basement office.

Dana looked up. "Agent Evan, right?" she asked smiling. She was glad that another female agent had been assigned to the X-Files. She hated the thought of being stuck with two men all of the time.

The woman nodded and held out her hand. "It's such a pleasure to meet you." she glanced around the office. "I've always been curious about the X-Files. I think that they are so interesting."

"Well.....I hope that they don't disappointing you." Dana grabbed a folder off the near by desk. "I wish that Agent Mulder could be here to meet you, but unfortunately he's on lend to the VCD and won't be back until the end of the week or next week. So you'll have to put up with me until then."

Agent Evan smiled and motioned to the wall. "Great poster." she said referring to the poster that read *I want to believe.* "I just know I'll enjoy working with you."

Dana smiled at the younger agents enthusiasm. She could remember a time when she too had shown that much enthusiasm about working. "I only that you know what your getting yourself into." she said. "This job isn't all fun and games. Agent Mulder and I have seen things and been in situations that we pray no one else will ever have to see. This job is based strictly on trust."

"Oh.....!" Agent Evan laughed. "Well you can trust me. Have you and agent Mulder been partner's long?" she asked changing the subject.

"Yeah close to eight years." she smiled. "Give or take three years." Seeing the confusion on the agents face she explained further. "Mulder and I were separated for a couple of months then he was shot and disappeared for three years and was just recently reinstated to the X-Files."

"So are you working on anything now?" Evan asked.

Dana shook her head. "Not at the moment I'm just re......." she was cut off by the ringing of her cellular. "Scully." she said pulling the phone our from her purse..

"Dana we've got something." the voice on the other end said. The voice was muffled and strained but she knew that it was Frohike. "Is it safe to talk where you are?"

Dana glanced at agent Evan and then said. "No. But give me a couple of hours and it will be ready."

Frohike understood. "Okay. 12:00, noon, at our place and make sure *they* don't follow you."

"Okay. I'll get it to you by noon, mom." she said then pushed end. She smiled at the other agent and rolled her eyes. "My mother wants this picture of my brother's and I that I had her take and she's been pestering me for weeks to get it to her."

"Oh, well I have to get my stuff and sign some papers so I'll let you get that picture and I'll see you tomorrow."

Dana nodded, "Okay. It was nice meeting you. I'm sure that you'll get sick of me pretty fast but I hope you enjoy working with us."

Agent Evan smiled and quickly headed out of the office with out saying another word.

Dana grabbed her purse and rushed out into the hall way. She pulled out her key and locked the door, hoping that no one would try to break in and find what she had been working on.

"We think that we've found the whereabouts' of Mulder's sister." Frohike announced as Dana walked into the door. "There were some experiments done and Mulder's sister was one of the main and very first subjects."

Dana closed the door and walked in. "What kind of experiment." she asked. "Can I see."

Langly nodded and moved aside so that she could see the screen. "It was an implant experiment like yours." he said. "Only something went wrong with the implant and Samantha suddenly knew everything about these men and their secret government organization. They hadn't meant to take her for very long, but when they found out that she knew all of this, they kept her hoping to erase her memory and return her later. They called her a risk to national security and signed her off as one of their victims."

"Her implant was designed to make her have these lapses in return for Bill Mulder's silence." Langly continued. "Only they ended up having to keep her silent instead."

"There's more." Frohike said.

"What?" she asked.

"Mulder was the one who was supposed to be taken." Frohike replied. "But he woke up too see two men in the room and out of fear the men grabbed Samantha and injected Mulder with something that would keep him quiet until they could deal with him and then they left. That very same night they came back, erased that portion of his memory and the rest is history."

"Whoa." Dana shook her head. "Why couldn't they just erase Samantha's memory and return her as well."

"Because." Langly replied. "They couldn't figure out what happened. Something went terribly wrong with that implant. They called that experiment the SE Project.. They could never duplicate the implant or even figure out where it came from. It gave her a serge of knowledge or insight and no matter how hard they tried to rid her of her information they could not. Everything went wrong from that point on."

"So they've been keeping her locked up all this time. Or have they been experimenting on her?" Dana questioned.

Byer's sighed. "They managed to erase her memory but it always returned. They put her in this family that they had close ties and access to; which let them continue their experiments. After a while she was put in a mental hospital."

"We did some checking." Langly said. "A woman named Kimberly Luder has just recently been abducted from the hospital Samantha Mulder was apparently in. Some of the nurses stated that they saw a bright light coming from Kimberly's room and when they went to investigate Kimberly was gone."

"So you think Kimberly and Samantha are one in the same?" Dana asked. "Mulder always said that he remembers a bright light and voices telling him that no harm will come to his sister. What is that bright light?"

"We haven't been able to figure that out yet." Byers admitted. "It's very possible that it could be a helicopter with floodlight's or some kind of beam. We still have a zillion more files to search through. We haven't even gotten to the government cover-ups yet." he turned to Frohike. "That's going to be interesting."

Dana nodded, "Okay, give me a copy of Samantha Mulder's file and I'll read up on it and do some leg work." she paused. "Don't tell Mulder anything. I want to check and see if this Kimberly Luder is Samantha Mulder. Is there a recent picture of Samantha."

Langly nodded and handed her the print outs. "It's in there. We'll call you when we find out more."

"Hi, I'm looking for Dr. Jones." Dana said flashing a nurse her badge. "Could you possibly tell me where I can find him?"

The nurse nodded and pointed to a man in the far corner of the lobby. "He's right over there." she said and busied herself in her work once again.

"Dr. Jones." Dana said approaching the man. "I'm agent Scully. I believe that we spoke on the phone."

The man nodded, "Yes, you were asking about Kimberly Louder." he led her to his office and motioned for her to sit down. "She disappeared about a week ago. It was the strangest thing. Some of the nurses were making their evening rounds and they saw a bright light coming from Kim's room and when they got in there she was gone. She had disappeared and the door was locked and the windows had bars."

Dana nodded. "Was the prognosis on her?" she asked. "I need to see all of her records and the commitment papers."

Dr. Jones nodded and handed her a files. "She's been with us a while. I believe that she's been with us since she was twenty-two or twenty-three." he paused. "She was suffering from delusions. She kept claiming that the government was hiding the existence of Extra-terrestrial's from the public." he laughed. "She claimed that some scientists had erased her memory and implanted a chip in her neck but it backfired and she was given some kind of insight into future events and different government organizations..."

"And you never took her seriously?" Dana questioned. She was a bit angry for the doctors reaction. She had not been expecting him to laugh at a patients health problems.

He shook his head. "No. She also claimed that she had been kidnapped and she believes herself to be...." he paused. "It's all there you can read it for yourself."

"She believes herself to be Samantha Mulder." She finished for the doctor. She shook her head and pulled out a picture of Mulder's sister when she was a little girl and then the one that the Lone Gunmen had given her. "You never once thought that she may be telling the truth about her identity?"

"No why?" the doctor asked. "I met her father. He was a very nice gentlemen. He said that she had been suffering from these fantasy worlds ever since her mother had died. He showed me her baby picture and a couple of her as a child."

"Did he smoke?" she asked.

"Yes. How do you know all of this?"

Dana handed the man the picture of Samantha. "Meet Samantha Mulder." she said. "Samantha Mulder was taken from her bed one night. She just disappeared with out a trace. There was no ransom or body.....she just disappeared. Her brother is my partner and has been searching for her for as long as we've been together and before that."

"They look the same." he mumbled. "But this man....he was so convincing I....."

Dana held up her hand. "It's her father that you met." she said. "But the mother was the guardian. The father never even wanted her....he used her to get even with his friend Bill Mulder who was not the child's real father." she paused. "It was all meant to be a joke, but something backfired and Samantha had to pay for it."

"Fox." the doctor mumbled. "Her brother's name is Fox. I always figured that it was made up because I wasn't used to that name. I never once thought that she was telling the truth. Usually our patents make up people and things to comfort them, that's what I believed she was doing." he gasped. "That part about the alien stuff......"

Dana shook her head. "I don't know about that part. I know that she was experimented on so she may have been a little bit....."she paused. "What do you call it.....out of touch with reality, but trust me I don't think that she knew what she was talking about. It was probably some delusion from the medication she was on or possible side effects from the things that they were doing to her."

"Possibly." he said uncertainly. "But she stuck with that same story the whole time that I've known her.

"Yes well," Dana replied. "Thank you for these files. It's been a big help to my investigation." she sighed. "I just wish I knew where to go from here."

8:07 A.M.

Dana Scully stood silently outside her office door. She could hear Mulder and Agent Evan laughing. She was about to open the door when it suddenly flew open.

"Hey Scully." Mulder said glancing around the hall. "Why are you just standing there."

Dana shrugged and pushed past him into the office. "I see that you've met Agent Evan." she said trying to hide the tension in her voice. Hiding what she had known about Samantha over the past week had been a big strain on her. Now she just had to find a way to tell him the news.

The fear of telling her partner was almost to much for her, she suddenly felt trapped and had to get away. Away from Mulder, away form the X-Files. Away from everyone.

Mulder nodded. "Yeah. So what's wrong. You look upset."

"No....I'm fine." she mumbled. "Do you mind if I take the day off?" she asked. "I...Um...had a headache this morning and ugh.....didn't really want to come in." she smiled and went over to her desk and unlocked the drawer. She pulled out a packet of papers and slipped them into her bag and quickly re-locked her desk. "Is it that okay with you guys?"

"Sure." Mulder replied. He could feel that he was hiding something from her and didn't like the idea. "I'll call you later." he said.

Dana shook her head, "No..." she said. "Please don't...I'll be in on Monday." she didn't wait for Mulder to respond. She quickly hurried out of the office and to the elevator.

Mulder quickly jumped up and followed her out of the office. He caught up with her just out side the elevator. "What's wrong?" he asked. "Damn it! Scully we're partners. Your hiding something from me....I know it." he grabbed her bag and pulled out the packet of papers. "What is this?" he asked. "Something for our friend....Mr. Damain?"

"Mulder." she whispered. "Please....this isn't the place or time to discuss this." she grabbed the packet back. "Don't ask me to, I don't think I can."

"What is it?" he asked again. "You've been so distant when I've called. You never seem to want to talk to me or about anything. Did I do something?"

"No." Dana replied. "Let's go to my place and talk.." she led him to her car and twenty minutes later they were seated on the couch.

The ride to her apartment had been tense and silent. Neither of them had wanted to speak for fear that another argument would break out.

"So tell me." Mulder said, breaking the silence that still plagued them.. "What's wrong?"

"Here she handed him the papers. "Don't read them yet. I want to tell you first." she took a deep breath and began. "I talked to the Lone Gunmen and they found your sister or at least, Um...." she paused. "I'll start from the beginning."

Mulder nodded but was beginning to become impatient.

"She was....you were....Mulder they took her so that they could implant a chip into her. It was supposed to make her have these lapses. They were going to send out a signal every time your father came forward. The lapses were sort of like epileptic seizures. Samantha was supposed to keep him quiet, only something went wrong and she was the one they needed to keep quiet."

"What do you mean?" Mulder asked. "She's not dead is she?" he was afraid to hear her answer.

"No." she shook her head. "Some how Samantha obtained all of the information on those men and their cover-ups. They couldn't erase her memory, but they could for short periods of time. They placed her with a family where they could control her sudden memory gain, but when she got older she got harder to handle and was put into a hospital under the name Kimberly Luder."

She handed him a picture. "Here." she said. "This was taken about three years ago."

Mulder smiled at the image of his sister. "Is she still there?" he asked hopefully.

Dana shook her head. "No." she whispered. "She was taken a week ago. Some nurses saw a bright light coming from her door way and when they got in there she was already gone."

"So close." he whispered. Tears came to his eyes. "Damn! We were so close. We missed her by a week." he stood up and looked down at her angrily. "God damn it! We were so close."

"There's more." She closed her eyes, praying that the words would come out easier, but there was no easy way to tell him what she had learned, he just had to pray that he was strong enough to handle the information.

Mulder shook his head. "I don't want to hear it. I've heard enough." he turned away, praying that he was trapped in a nightmare and not reality. How much more could there be? She'd already taken away his hopes, he didn't want to hear anything more. "I just don't want to hear it."

"Your going to hear it!" Dana cried and grabbed his arm. "She wasn't the only one taken that night Mulder. You saw those men, you knew who took your sister, Mulder. They gave you a shot that knocked you out until they could take you somewhere and wipe out that portion of your memory." she clutched his hand. "You know who did it Mulder. You always have and always will. Whether or not those memories are accessible, they're still there and nothing will ever take their place."

"They used her to keep my father quiet?" he asked angrily. "They used my sister as a test subject and they messed up so she had to pay. She had to be the one locked away. It should have been my father. I wish he had just gone forward and pulled the plug on their operation."

"We'll find her." Dana assured her partner. "Mulder I promise that we'll find her." she took his hand and gently pulled him down in front of her.

He wouldn't look at her. He was trying not to make eyes contact. 'Look at me.' she urged him silently. 'Oh, God Mulder look at me. Don't shut me out again.' she tilted his chin upwards so that he was looking directly into her eyes.

"Mulder." she whispered. "Don't shut me out. I promise that we'll find her. I'd give my life if I thought it would help you believe."

"No." he whispered. "I wouldn't want you to give your life for anyone or anything." he smiled. "I'm fine. I'm not shutting you out, I'm just sparing you my pain."

"You don't have to." Dana said softly. "Your pain should be mine. We can share it." she traced the out line of his lips with her finger. "Let me comfort you. The last time I tried to comfort you, I left. let me make up for all the pain I've caused."

Mulder buried his head in her lap and cried. Dana wrapped her arms around him and held him tightly. He could feel the wetness of her tears in his hair. She was crying for him.

"I know we'll find her." he whispered. "I believe." he pulled away and looked up into her big, blue eyes. "just like I believed that I'd one day be with you again."

Dana smiled softly and took his hand in hers. "We'll find her.....nothing can keep us away from the truth. Nothing."

Dana was now well aware of the cold snow settling beside her on the bench, but she didn't care. She didn't care if she got sick and died, she was determined to stay out side as long as the night would let her. She felt comforted by the vast darkness and silence that surrounded her.

Even though she knew that she should go back inside and wait for information on her partner, she couldn't move. She was already beginning to feel weak and ill from the cold air and the exhaustion that she was fighting.. Sighing, she touched her forehead and groaned. She was getting a fever and she wasn't sure whether it was from the cold or something entirely different.

"Scully." a soft voice said from behind.

She turned to face Frohike. "I'm not really in the mood for company." she mumbled even though she was glad to see him.

Frohike shook his head and sat down. "I got a call from someone saying that Mulder, Skinner and Samantha had been shot. I got her as soon as I could. Have you heard anything?"

Dana sniffled and shook her head. "I've been out here for a while......I don't know what's going on. I couldn't...couldn't stay there any longer. I felt so helpless. I kept feeling like I should be in there with them.....bleeding and suffering."

"Dana, you shouldn't talk like that. From what I've heard this couldn't have been stopped. There's no reason to blame yourself when you were just doing your job."

"Will you take me home?" she asked. "I really want to go home.....I can't stay here any longer. I just can't."

Frohike nodded and stood up. "Come on. I'll even stay with you."

"That's all right, I'm sure I'll be okay." she said trying to think of an excuse for why he shouldn't stay. "I really want to be alone. I know that it may sound stupid but I really do not want company right now or for a long time."

"Maybe you should go back in there and wait?" he suggested sensing that something was wrong. "I really don't think that it's a good idea for you to go home until they catch who did this."

Dana only nodded and followed him back to the doors of the hospital, but before she entered she stopped him. "She's dead." she whispered. "I shot her."

"Did you do as I asked." The Cancer Man asked the woman who had once again suddenly shown up. He pulled out a cigarette and began to poke around his pockets for his lighter or a book of matches.

The woman nodded and pulled out a lighter. "Let me." she said. "The more you smoke the quicker time will go by and the quicker you will die. Then I will get your position."

"I quit." he said throwing the cigarette to the ground. "Are you happy my dear?" he laughed. "Of course not......you'll have to wait longer. I assure you, this job is a big responsibility and you may find that it's to much for you. You would have to continue to hide the truth and I have a long list of connections and people I want protected."

"Like agent Mulder?" the woman asked.

The Cancer Man jerked his head up with shock. "How did you know that?" he asked. "Who are you really?"

She shrugged. "I'm just someone who wants power and justice." she grinned. "In my own way of course. I suggest that you fear me, Seth. I do not lose easily. I put up a big fight and I hardly ever give up. Death will have a field day with me. He'll never be able to take me into his darkness. I won't let him."

"So I take it you've given up before?" he asked.

"Yes...." she replied. "But I was seven years old and a dumb kid. I'd hardly be that stupid now."

Seth laughed and stood up. "Would you care to tell me what you gave up on?" he asked.

The woman smiled. "I gave up on trying to kill my brother. He finally made it easy on me and got sick."

Dana stepped back inside the hospital waiting room. She saw her mother huddled up in a corner near the nurses station and went over to her. "Have you hard anything yet?" she asked. She didn't know where Frohike had gone. He had suddenly disappeared with out a trace or an announcement.

Her mother nodded, "Walter is going to be fine." she said happily. "He's awake and talking. He was shot in the shoulder and in the stomach but it was nothing life threatening. He's going to be fine." The look of relief on her mothers face made Dana feel so much better.

"Did you here anything on Mulder?" she asked. "Or Samantha?"

"No......, they were still in surgery when Walter woke up." she sighed. "I do wish that they'd hurry up and tell us what's going on. I'm beginning to get really nervous. I keep trying to work up enough courage to call Mulder's mother and tell her about Fox and Samantha, but I just can't think of what to say. I know that she knew nothing of Fox finding Samantha and it would probably cause her to go into shock and I would hate to have to tell her about Samantha's being hurt as well. It's just be too much for her to handle."

Dana nodded. "I'll call her, but I want to see Skinner first. Can I see him?" she didn't really want to call Mulder's mother either. She knew that the best thing to do was going out to Chilmark and telling her in person, but she didn't have enough guts and she wanted to be with Mulder in case something happened.

Margaret nodded, "I guess, but I doubt that they'll let you stay long. They just kicked me out and I'm his wife. I'm beginning to think that doctors don't care about the family's of the patients. I want to be with my husband, I don't want to sit out here all night while he lies in there, in that bed, in pain. I just don't want to do it. I wan to be with him holding his hand."

Dana smiled sadly at her mother and made her way down the hall to her superior room. She was surprised to see that he wasn't hooked up to as many tubes and wires as she thought he would have been. "Sir." she whispered approaching him. She was almost afraid to wake him.

Skinner opened his eyes and sighed. "Dana." he said if he hadn't been expecting anyone else. "How is agent Mulder. Margaret wouldn't tell me anything when I asked."

She shrugged and sat down next to him. "He and his sister are still in surgery." she paused. "I'm sorry, I know that I really messed up. I have to call Mulder's mother and I really don't know what to say. She's not prepared to hear this and I don't want to put her into shock. I might not even tell her about Samantha until she gets here. If she just thinks it's Mulder then maybe she'll be a little bit more prepared."

Skinner shook his head. "I don't think that anyone can truly be prepared for the death or injury of a child even though they may be expecting it. Your mother may have been prepared for something bad to happen to you, but not knowing what it was caused her a lot more pain." he paused. "This isn't your fault. I believe that Agent Mulder and I could have been a little more careful."

Dana shook her head angrily. "Why does everyone keep telling me that!? she cried. "Mulder and I crossed the damn line. We should never have, I should never have let it happen. I should never have let any of this happen in the first place." she felt tears in her eyes, but didn't wipe them away. "I should be the one lying in that bed, not you. I should be the one with a bullet in my head, no Samantha." she sniffled. "I should be the one in surgery, fighting for my life. Not Mulder. Never Mulder."

"Dana, God must have some plan for you. Your so strong.....in all the years I've known you, you've never given up. You've had maybe one or two breakdowns where I, myself , have seen you cry. Most agents would have quit or tried to end their lives if they had gone through what you had, I was almost certain that you would quit after your abduction, but sure enough you were back to work once you were strong enough." he reached out and took her hand. "You hung in there after you thought Mulder had died. You didn't give up and you shouldn't now. Now is not the time to be losing your faith."

"I know." she replied. "Actually I think that I'm just tired of watching everyone I love suffer. I said a lot of things to Mulder that I regret. Just thinking that I may never get the chance to apologize and tell him how I really feel makes me crazy. If I lose him again I think that you'll have to bury me next to him because I won't stay here and lose everything again. I refuse. I just don't think I could take losing him a second time. I'm not made of iron. I can break and I can bend. It's just not in me anymore to continue with out him. It's just not in me."

"It's your life, Agent Scully. If you choose to lose your faith and everything along with it, that's your problem. But I just hope that you choose to live even though things may not work out the way you want them too. If not for my sake or your mother's, do it for yours. You have so much time left. Your mother and don't. We just found each other and I'll be damned if I'm going to let a couple of bullet wounds stop me from living my life the way I want to live it, so you shouldn't either. Agent Mulder and his sister will be fine. From what I know about Samantha Mulder, she's a fighter and I know that Mulder is. So don't you dare give up hope yet."

Dana nodded slightly. She understood what he was saying, but she was afraid to do it. The truth was that she was afraid of living with out Mulder. She'd gotten a good taste of being with out him and she didn't want to go through all of the loneliness and loss again.

"Where did you guys disappear to on Friday?" Agent Evan asked as Mulder and Scully made they're way into their office.

"I went to my mother's." Mulder lied. "She wanted me to help her paint her kitchen and I thought that since Scully was taking the day off I would as well. Sorry if we inconvenienced you." he gave her a sympathetic smile and sat down at his desk. "So did we miss anything?"

Evan shook her head. "No. I just sat around looking through some of the X-Files."

"Mulder could you get me a......" Dana began but was cut off by a knock at the door. "Come-in." she called.

"Agent Scully." Skinner said sticking his head into the office. "There is something that I need to discuss with you and I need to before I forget. I've been putting it off for weeks now."

Dana nodded and stood up. "Okay." she said flashing Mulder a worried look. "Give me a minute and I'll meet you in your office."

Skinner nodded and quickly left.

"Mulder. What did you do now?" she asked half jokingly.

Mulder laughed, "Hey!" he cried. "He wanted to talk to you not me."

"Well I better get up there." she mumbled and stood up. "Wish me luck guys."

"Good luck." Agent Evan called as Dana left the office.

She was about half way to his office when she saw her mother rushing down the hall. "Mom!" she called hurrying up to her. "What are you doing here. I thought that you were going to Cape Raines today."

Margaret Scully stopped and motioned to Skinners office. "I was......." she paused. "Dana.....come with me." she said and led her to Skinners office. "Walter!" Margaret said pushing his door open.

Skinner jumped up flushed with embarrassment. "Margaret!" he cried. "What are you doing here? I was just about to tell her."

"Tell me what?" Dana asked. She was suddenly uneasy with the situation. She didn't like the idea of her mother was calling her superior by his first name and she didn't like that he was calling her Margaret.

"Hello!" she cried. "What's going on here?" Her heart began to race.

Margaret smiled and took Skinners hand. "Dana, Walter and I are going to be married." she said. Her throat tightened with fear. Fear that her daughter would run from the office and never turn back.

Dana's hand flew to her mouth with shock. "What!" she cried. "When...what.....how did this happen. I don't understand." she turned to her mother. "You never told me about.....about..." she motioned to them. "And now you expect me to....." she shook her head. "I can't believe this. Tell me that I'm dreaming." She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.

'This can't be happening.' she thought. 'It just can't. Not to me, not now. Not when there is already so much else going on.'

Skinner stepped forward but Dana moved away. "Please." he said. "Understand. I love your mother dearly. I would never hurt her and when I asked her to marry me I wasn't even thinking about your feelings. I'm sorry, but I love her and nothing can change the way I feel."

"How long has this been going on?" she asked. "Does anyone else know?"

Margaret nodded, "It's been going on for about a year now." she replied. "And yes Fox knows. He found out when we were looking for you after those men took you. We never meant to keep it hidden, it's just that you were so depressed and you and I weren't talking. I just thought that this would only hurt you more."

Dana couldn't take it. Of all the people she tried to picture her mother with, Skinner was certainly not one of them. With out saying another word she ran out of his office and hurried back down to her office, where she found Mulder and Agent Evan engrossed in a deep conversation about her.

She stood silently outside the door listening to there every word.

"So she can really be that cold?" she heard Agent Evan asking Mulder. "I had heard about her reputation for being the Ice Queen but I never really believed it."

She saw Mulder nod then laugh. "She was such a pain in the ass when we first began working together. She wouldn't believe a word I said and she thought that most of my theories were crazy." he laughed. "Hell she thought I was crazy."

"Then why do you still work with her?" Evan asked. Dana could hint a bit of disgust in the younger agents voice.

Dana stood silently waiting for his answer. She was already burning up with anger. She didn't believe that he was crazy. She never had. Hell! She didn't deny any of his theories anymore. She believed more than he did. She just never wanted to admit it to him. She was afraid to tell him that she believed in UFO's and aliens. She was afraid to confide in him, it was almost like she didn't trust him anymore.

"I don't know." Mulder replied. "I guess that I trust her more than anyone else. She was always there for me when I needed her and she's been through a lot. A lot more than I have. She was abducted, her sister was Murdered. She nearly died more than once and I messed up three years of her life by letting her think that I was dead. I mean I feel sorry for her most of the time." he laughed.

"I bet I know why Skinner called her up to his office. He was probably going to tell her about his relationship with her mother." he laughed again. "I'll bet Scully will come down her and chew me out for not telling her about them."

Agent Evan laughed. "I don't think that I want to hear that." she said shifting positions. "Maybe I'll go get us some breakfast. Do you want anything?" she pulled out her wallet to see how much cash she had. "I can be quick or if you want I'll take my time and let you too work out your little problems." she snickered. "I'll pray for you."

"No thanks to the food part." Mulder said. "But yes, do pray for me. These conversations can get ugly and I may need all the prayers I can get."

Evan laughed and walked into the hall way. She smiled at Dana as she passed, not even realizing that she had heard them.

Dana glared at the younger agent as she passed. She didn't even want to walk into the office, but did. She completely ignored Mulder, grabbed her keys and left. She could hear Mulder calling her name as she went down the hall,. but she paid no attention to it. She kept walking until she reached her car.

She noticed a small piece of paper sticking out her left windshield wiper. Opening it up she read......
Agent Scully,
Meet me at 11:21 P.M. at the
Washington Monument. I have some
important news on the whereabouts of
Samantha Mulder. Come alone.

Dana crumpled up the note and quickly climbed into the car. "I'll be damned if I'm going to meet someone about Mulder's sister." she muttered. He didn't care about her so she didn't care about him or his search.

"Why are you here?" Seth asked the young woman. "I really wish you'd stop showing up here unannounced. Your beginning to get on my nerves." he took a long drag on his cigarette and put it out. "So what do I owe this pleasure? What do you have for me today?"

The woman laughed, "Your job." she replied but quickly changed the subject. "Some one has found out the whereabouts of Samantha. She's in no condition to be moved and I don't suggest that you move her until it's done, but we're going to have to act fast or Agent Mulder and his bitch of a partner will be knocking down our door before we can say *Spooky*."

"What's all this *we* and *our* stuff?" he asked. "I'm getting kind of sick of you referring to this project as *ours* when it's not even *ours* to begin with." he pulled out another cigarette. "I'm all ears......what do you suggest we do with her?"

The woman shrugged. "She'll be fine for a couple of months. It's just enough time for me to make my move."

"Can I ask what your name is? You suddenly show up here and I don't even know who you are or who you work for. Would you mind filling me in. I would really like to know who sent you and why."

"All in good time, Seth. All in good time." she smiled. "You do what I say and there will be know problem. Do you get my drift."

He nodded, "What ever you say." he mumbled leaning back in his chair. "But what can a little thing like you do to me. I should have never let you in here."

"I had clearance." she said softly. "I can have all the clearance I want. I can get and do anything I want. No one will kill me or harm me with out doing something to themselves so I suggest that you don't even try it."

JFK Memorial Hospital
Washington DC 1:29 A.M.

Dana left the hospital room with Skinner's words still ringing in her head.

"It's your life, Agent Scully." he had said. If you choose to lose your faith and everything along with it, that's your problem. But I just hope that you choose to live even though things may not work out the way you want them too. If not for my sake or your mother's, do it for yours. You have so much time left. Your mother and I don't. We just found each other and I'll be damned if I'm going to let a couple of bullet wounds stop me from living my life the way I want to live it, so you shouldn't either."

She approached the nurses station and smiled at the woman behind the desk. "I'm agent Scully." she said softly. "I was wondering if you had any information on the conditions of Agent Mulder and his sister Samantha. They were brought in a couple of hours ago for gunshot wounds and I haven't heard anything since."

The nurse smiled and began searching through the folders and charts on her desk. "They are still in surgery." she said after locating a folder on Mulder. "When we know something more a doctor will be out to speak with you. Have you contacted Agent Mulder's family. I think that would be the wisest thing to do in the mean time."

Dana shook her head and pulled out her cellular. "Thanks." she said and made her way out to the parking lot. The night had suddenly gotten colder and the snow had begun to fall harder, with such fierceness that she had to move under the emergency overhang. With a shaking hand she dialed Mulder's mother's number and waited for an answer.

After five rings his mother answered. "Hello." she said sleepily.

"Mrs. Mulder." Dana said softly. "This is agent Scully." She was so nervous. She prayed that Mulder's mother couldn't pick out the nervousness to her tone.

"Dana." Mulder's mother cried. "What's wrong. Why are you calling me at 1:30 in the morning. Has something happened to Fox?" there was a hint of panic noticeable in her voice.

Dana took a deep breath and continued. "Yes." she was trying to keep her voice as calm and neutral as possible. "He's been shot.......he's still in surgery so I haven't heard on his condition, but it's bad. I have to be honest when I tell you that he may not make it out of surgery."

"What hospital?"

"JFK Memorial." she replied in answer to Mrs. Mulder's question. She looked up at the large building that once had been so hopeful. She could remember a time when she would have been glad to step inside the doors and walk down the long corridors, but now she dreaded it. She had already lost Mulder once in that hospital, she wasn't about to lose him again.

"Dana!" Mrs. Mulder cried, snapping her back to the present., "Were you hurt?"

"No, but Skinner and.....and....." her voice trailed off. The phone was not the right way to tell her. "Will you hurry."

"I'll be there a soon as I can." she said and hung up.

Dana glanced back up at the hospital. 'It's not all bad.' she thought. 'One of my troubles died there.'

"Where have you been?" Mulder asked as Agent Evan walked into the office. "Skinner is all pissed because Scully stormed out on him and she's mad at me for some reason and to top it all off, there's this case that needs our attention and I can't seem to get a hold of anyone."

"I'm sorry." Evan said. "I got caught in traffic. There was this accident and they had everything all messed up." she smiled. "I guess I had my cellular off. I tried as hard as I could to get back here, but......."

Mulder shook his head. "I'm not mad. There's no reason to apologize." he sighed. "I guess that I'm pissed at Scully. She's not answering her cellular and she's not home. I can't figure out where she could be." he banged his fist against his desk angrily. "I hate when she gets in these moods. There's never any chance of shaking her out of it until something happens."

"Maybe you should go over to her place. She's probably....." she paused hearing the door open behind her.

"I'm probably what?" Dana asked slamming the door shut. "Sulking?" she shook her head. "No, I wouldn't stoop to that level. Mulder can I speak to you a moment. There is something that I have to get off my chest."

Mulder exchanged a quick glance with Agent Evan and then followed his partner into the hall. "Scully....Listen." he said holding up his hands. "What ever this is about will have to wait. We have a case that needs our attention and I've been trying to get a hold of you for the last two hours."

Dana shook her head. "Mulder, if your going to talk about me, at least do it when I'm not around. I don't like being called an Ice Queen."

"Oh, God." he reached out to her, but she pulled away. "Dana, please. It wasn't what you think."

"Mulder. I don't really care. I think that we both need a vacation from each other." she handed him a set of airline tickets. "Skinner asked me to give you these. I told him that I wanted to sit this one out so he let me. I think that he didn't want to risk another one of my out bursts." she smiled. "I'll keep searching for Samantha. I think I may have a lead on her whereabouts."

Mulder nodded. "Are you sure you'll be all right by yourself?" he asked.

"Yeah.....I have to go." she gave him a quick hug. "Be careful."

The woman, chained to a wall in cell thirteen opened her eyes and glanced around. 'They've got me, again.' she realized as she tried to move her arms and legs. She was barely able to sit down. The restraints on her wrists weren't that tight, but they were just tight enough to make her uncomfortable.

She glanced around, searching for a way out, but found none. "Damn!" she mumbled and took in a deep breath. The air in the cell was musty, she hadn't been there since she was a child, but she remember it well. She remember the first night, waking up to find her self confused and lost. She had been chained down to a bed then, barely tall enough to reach the floor. Now she found her height to be very uncomfortable.

Pulling as hard as she could, she managed to pull her left wrist out of the rusty link. Her sudden loss of weight had enabled her to break free of the restraints. With another quick tug she pulled her right wrist free, but not with out complications. The sharp rusty edge sliced her wrist leaving an ugly scratch that would need medical attention.

'Please.' she thought silently. 'Don't let them erase my memory again. I can't take it any more.' She wanted to get out......she wanted to be free and back where she belonged.

She was about to scream, but a sound outside the door stopped her. The familiar smell of cigarette smoke filled her nostrils. She sat silently, waiting for her captors to enter. After a minute or two the doors opened and a man appeared in the dim light.

"How did you get free?" he asked angrily. "Who let you go?"

The woman shrugged. "I pulled my hands out myself." she replied. There was no sense in getting anyone else in trouble. "I sliced my wrist, see." she held it up to him.

The man stepped closer to examine her wrist. "You need stitches." he mumbled. "You stupid girl.....why do you have to cause so many problems. Since the first day you got here you've been causing one problem after another. You've been more trouble than your worth."

"It's not my fault!" she cried. "You should have let me go instead of keeping me here. Do you actually think anyone would have believed me." she shook her head. "I think you proved that when you locked me up in that damn hospital. My story was so outrageous that no one in there right mind would have believed me. I was a kid, my mother and brother would have thought I was out of my mind. They wouldn't have believed me.......I don't understand why you've done this."

"Is this the first time we've actually talked?" he asked. "I can't recall a time when we've said more than a few words to one another. I think that this is a start to a great father, daughter relationship. Don't you?" his face lit up with an evil smile..

"I'll never admit that your my father!" she screamed. "I'm ashamed to have you as a father. Bill Mulder was more of a father to me than you ever were. He's my father, not you. Never you!" she backed away. "I don't know what my mother ever saw in you. She should have thought before she acted on you. Personally I don't think that you were worth the trouble."

"So your saying that your a mistake?" he asked. "You know, if your mother and I had never gotten together and fallen in love, you would not be here. It was fates decision, not mine. I didn't even know about you until Bill came into my office one day."

"What did he say?"

Seth shrugged and took a long, slow drag of his dying cigarette. "You were about five years old. He claimed that I was having an affair with your mother and he asked for it to stop." he smiled, thinking back to that day. "He asked when it had started and I told him........all we did was put two and two together and we found out that Bill wasn't even there the day you were conceived." he laughed. "Could you imagine my surprised when I found out that Samantha Mulder was really my daughter and not the daughter of my best friend and colleague."

Samantha groaned with disgust. She couldn't stand the thought of that man touching her mother. "Do you see my mother anymore? Or do you see my brother?"

"They stopped looking for you years ago." Seth replied, taking the last drag off of his cigarette before putting it out.. "Your mother forgot about you.....your brother lost interest in his quest to find you. I'll bet that he hasn't even thought about you in years. Fox has his own life, not a family, but his own life. There's no way that he'd let you back into it. He wouldn't want his secure life all messed up." he stood up. "Come, Samantha, dear.....let's go get that wrist of yours fixed up."

Samantha shook her head. "I'd rather bleed to death than have you touch me again." she moved away from him. "Why wont you just leave me alone. This is all your fault. I never did anything, I don't deserve this."

She was hurt by what he had said about her family. She had always hoped that Fox hadn't given up hope on her, but she knew that she was hoping for to much. It had been so long ago. He would have most likely thought her to be dead. She had always prayed that her disappearance hadn't ruined his life, she hoped that he was happy and that what ever he was doing for a living brought him joy. She knew that she would most likely never see her mother or her brother again, but she hoped. Hope was really all she had left.

The Cancer Man stood up. "Very well my dear. But when you come down with tetanus, don't come crying to me."

"I wont." she muttered as he left. "Believe me I won't." She was glad that he hadn't chained her up again, but she still felt trapped. "Fox...." she mumbled and drifted off to a restless sleep.

Her dreams were haunted by images of her brother. Her brother not as a child, but as a man. She dreamt of him often, but never as she was at that moment. He wasn't alone. There was a woman with him. The woman was standing close, next to his side. There was a light surrounding them, engulfing them into a see of endless light. She saw the woman scream and grab her brother by the arm, but he stayed poised as if he didn't notice her presence. He was trying to say something, but no sound came out. Right when Samantha felt that she was close enough to touch him, everything went black.

JFK Memorial Hospital
2:15 A.M.

Dana jumped up as a doctor came out of the emergency operation room.

"Agent Scully?" the doctor asked as she and her mother approached. "I'm Dr. Nelson."

Dana nodded. "How are they?" she asked. "Agent Mulder's mother hasn't arrived yet but I do have communication with her."

Dr. Nelson glanced down at his charts. "Agent Mulder suffered three gunshot wounds. Two in his back causing massive internal bleeding of the left ventricle and one gunshot to the lower calf. We were able to stop most of the internal bleeding, but the severity of the wounds left us little to work with."

"And Samantha?" Margaret asked, eyeing her daughter carefully. "How is she?"

"She suffered one shot to the head, but it wasn't nearly as severe as I first thought. It grazed the left side of her scull causing a slight fracture, but she should recover nicely." he paused. "However she is suffering from server exhaustion and is highly malnourished. She's under weight by close to thirty pounds. A woman of her size should at least weigh a healthy one-hundred and twenty pounds and she weighs just under ninety."

Dana wasn't listening to the doctor anymore. A thought had suddenly accrued to her. It was Mulder's birthday. It was his birthday and what had he gotten for a present? An optimistic person would say he got Samantha, be a pessimistic person would say that he lost everything..

"Can I see him?" she asked. Shock was now beginning to seep in. She had expected Samantha to be the one in bad condition, not Mulder. She had been expecting him to walk out of the emergency room doors with just a small bandage and grin on his face. She had been denying the fact that he wasn't going to be all right, she had believed what she had wanted to believe. Deep down in side she had known that he was in bad shape, but she had stuck by her hopes.

Dr. Nelson nodded. "Yes, but just for a moment."

Dana nodded and followed the doctor down the hall to where Mulder lay, to where he lay dying. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw him. He was hooked to tubes and wires, she could hardly recognize him. The man lying in the bed before her wasn't the man that she had fallen in love with. He wasn't the man that she trusted and believed in. He was a man that she never wanted to know. She never wanted to see him so weak and lifeless.

Tears stung her eyes as she listened to the beeping of Mulder's heart monitor. She had once been in his place, fighting to regain any sense of life or trying to see any hint of light. She had been so afraid of the darkness then, and she knew that Mulder must feel the same way. She wanted to reach out to him, to comfort him, to pull him into her arms and kiss away all of his pain, but she didn't. She feared that he may open his eyes and wish her away. Instead, she stood there, in the door way, watching him sleep.

"Dana." Margaret said and laid a gentle hand on her daughters shoulder. "Don't you want to go in? Are you all right." she watched her daughter closely.

Dana shook her head and shrunk away into the shadows of hall. "I did that to him." she sobbed, pointing to Mulder lifeless form.. "Mom I did that to him, he's never going to forgive me. He's never going to love me again." A single tear escaped the pools of water forming in the corners of her eyes. "Oh God! What the hell have I done." she fell to her knees and cried. "Mom........" she reached out for her mother, but Margaret Scully was gone.

She had left, ashamed that her daughter had lost control. Ashamed that she could do nothing to ease the pain her daughter was suffering. She just simply walked down the hall and left the hospital with out another word.

Scully's apartment
1:15 A.M.

The whole meeting had been bogus. While Dana went to meet the man on the whereabouts of Samantha Mulder, someone, somehow, had completely trashed her apartment. The man had never shown up for the meeting and she had wasted an hour and a half sitting in the parking lot of the Washington Monument.

Angrily, Dana pulled out her cellular and dialed the number now very familiar to her. She waited through four rings until Frohike answered. "Frohike they know." she cried looking around her apartment. "They sent me on a wild goose chase so that they could trash my apartment."

She heard Frohike exhale a deep breath. There was some slight static and a couple of muffled words before he spoke. "If they don't know about us I think that we'll be safe."

Dana wanted to reach out and strangle the man on the other end of the line. There was know way that they were safe. If they had found them once they would find them again, there were no doubts about it.

"No." Dana mumbled. "I don't think that you are safe. I want you and the guys to leave, get out while you still can." her voice was hushed. "Please.....just go. Take everything and go....don't try to contact me, don't even try to contact Mulder. You guys have already been through enough. I don't think you need to get shot again. And not matter how much I'd like to shoot you, I don't want you to get shot. I still need you guys."

"I wasn't shot." Frohike informed her. "And there's no way we're leaving just because some idiot in the pentagon wants a scrap of plastic. We are not chickens Dana, we live to fight.""

"Frohike!" she cried then smiled. "I'll make it worth your wile." she said in her most seductive voice. "Pretty please......" the words rolled off her tongue before she could stop herself. She knew that she would never hear the end of this, but she just had to make them leave. She had to make them understand the danger of their situation.

"Um....hang on." he muttered and cupped his hand over the mouth piece.

Dana could hear him arguing with the others and laughed. Frohike was so easy to convince, but she suddenly felt a pang of regret at her chosen actions. Pushing away her feelings she focused on the others conversation.

There was a long pause before Frohike came back to the phone. "All right." he said finally. "But you have to come with us."

Dana laughed. "No way guys. I have to stay here with Mulder, he may be in danger." she sighed. "All though I doubt that he really needs my help."

"Dana......" Frohike whispered trying to think of something to say. "Be careful, okay. I don't want to have to go to your funeral. Nothing is worth dying for......not even Mulder."

"I promise." Dana assured him then flipped the her phone closed and glanced around her apartment. There was no way she was going to stay there. Grabbing a few of her things she ran out the door, never bothering to look back.

Margaret Scully's House
1:50 A.M.

Dana pounded on her mother's door. She wasn't really ready to face her mother, but she had no where else to go. Usually she would have gone to Mulder's, but he was gone and she doubted that they'd have much to say to one another..

The light turned on in the hall and a few moments later there was the sound of a lock being opened and then a face appeared in the door way.

"Dana!" Margaret Scully cried. "Dana what's wrong." She was wearing her thin cotton robe.

Dana let her self go and flung herself into her mothers arms. "There after me again." she whispered. "I just wish I could get away from them but I can't. Every where I go they are there........watching me." She heard a rustling from the living room and adverted her eyes to focus on her superior. She pulled away and whipped the tears from her eyes. "Hello sir."

Skinner stepped forward, feeling a tad bit uncomfortable. He felt like a teenage caught necking by his girlfriends father.

"What's wrong?" he asked. "Has someone done something to you?"

Dana shook her head. "No...." she paused. "Remember that disk that Tom Crawford gave me?" she asked. He nodded so she continued. "Well I sort of lied when I told you that the copy was destroyed." she smiled. "Frohike and the guys have the copy.....my place was trashed, someone was looking for it. I don't know how they found out that it still existed, but they found out and now I'm paying the price of being a sneak. I never meant to cause this much trouble."

"Oh Dana!" he mother cried. She glanced to Skinner for support. She didn't feel comfortable knowing that he daughter was in danger. She's already lost Melissa to those same men.

Losing another daughter to the same men would just be too much for her to handle. Margaret sighed and took her daughters hand. Yes, it was real. She wasn't dead yet. 'Still so much life.' she thought sadly.

"There's more." Dana mumbled. "I was able to find the location of Agent Mulder's sister, but *they* moved her just before I could get to her. I just don't know what to do anymore. I feel like I'm losing all of my patience with Mulder."

"You mean you actually found Samantha Mulder?" Skinner asked. His shock was apparent. He wasn't expecting her to be alive. He had always believed that Mulder was chasing after a ghost.

"Yes. It's a long story." she sighed. "One in which I rather not go into at the moment. I just want to get some sleep and figure out what I'm going to do about everything that's going on in my crappy life"

Margaret nodded. "Of course." she said. "You can stay here." she ushered her daughter up to her room.

*******************
2:00 A.M.

"Do you think Dana will be all right?" Margaret asked Skinner as she entered their bedroom.

"Yeah give her time......" he replied. "She may have looked surprised to see me here, but I assure you that she'll get used to the idea."

"Walter!" she cried. "I wasn't talking about us. I was talking about what happened with her this evening."

"Oh....." he smiled. "I'll keep an eye on her. I'm sure that she'll be all right." He was trying to act strong, but he wasn't feeling so secure. He knew that Dana Scully had a bad temper and her stubbornness was so hard to get through. He was almost sure that her stubbornness would be the death of her..

Friday, October 13, 2000
JFK Memorial Hospital
2:35 A.M.

Giving it another shot, Dana walked into Mulder's hospital room and sat down next to his bed. Hesitant at first, she reached out and gently gripped his hand with her own.

His hand was cold and limp to the touch. There was no warmth or tender caress left in his fingers. She remembered the first time she had first held his hand, it had been so long ago, but she still remembered how soft and gentle his touch had been. The way his long fingers had closed over hers, comforting her.

"Mulder." she whispered. "Mulder......please. Don't leave me, don't leave me again." she sniffled seeing no response from him. "I was wrong, I was jealous.....I....I was so stupid." she buried her head in the sheets. "Please." she begged. "Please live......let him live."

Her chest began to ache as she cried for him. She had no intention of moving but suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder. Slowly, she looked up to find Frohike standing behind her.

"I just got word that the project was aborted." he said softly. "Langly accidentally ran into a couple of officers down by the docks....they were arresting two men who had been destroying evidence." he looked down at his feet. "Those fires destroyed a lot of the evidence on the existence of extraterrestrial. We were to late."

Dana nodded and reached out for his hand. "I've been so terrible to you and you've done nothing but care about me. Thank you."

"It's been a pleasure, Agent Scully ." he reached out and gently touched her cheek.. "You know that I have always loved you......I'd die for you. I just hope that Mulder sees what a wonderful woman he has. There are so few woman like you out there and id' hate to see the woman I love fall into the wrong hands." he paused, "Mulder is a good friends and if I can't have you, he's the only other person I'd want you to be with."

His words were so sincere that it brought tears to her eyes. "I'm sorry that I could never return the affection." she whispered. "I don't deserve to be loved by you or Mulder. You found Mulder's truth for him, that was something I could never do or replace......" she sighed. "I always wished that I could have been his truth, but he always loved something a lot more than me."

"He loved you...." Frohike paused. "He loves you. I take it that you didn't hear what he said to me that night you two had that big fight......."

Dana shook her head. "No....I wasn't really trying to listen, I was trying to figure out how to use my gun......he had me so mad that I couldn't remember how to fire it." a small smile played at the corners of her mouth. "I think that night was the night that everything started to go bad. We had so many other fights before that, but that night was the worst ever. I remember a stupid fight we had after he and Evan got back from that one case........I almost thought that was the end."

J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building
10:30 P.M.

"Working late, aren't we Scully?" Mulder asked dropping his bag onto his desk.

Dana glanced up and nodded. "I guess, what are you doing here? I didn't think you were getting back until Friday." she looked back down at the file she was reading.

"I...was...." he sat down at his desk. "Is something wrong? You look distracted."

"No." she looked up and smiled. She didn't want to tell him about her apartment being trashed. She really hadn't been looking forward to him coming back at all. She had tried to avoid his phone calls, but he always seemed to catch her.

"So how was the case?" she asked. "How was Agent Evan?"

Mulder laughed. "She's a great partner. She's so much easier to work with....." his voice trailed off as he realized what he had just said. It hadn't come out the way he had wanted. He looked at Scully to see her eyes blazing over with fury. "I mean she wasn't nearly as hard to convince as you we......" he stopped again.

'Great going, Mulder.' he thought. 'If you keep doing that she's really going to kill you.' It already felt like he was walking on thin ice with her. He was almost afraid to say anything to her.

"Um....maybe I should shut up." he mumbled.

Dana nodded. "You better."

"What's your problem, Scully? All we do is fight." he got up and moved over to her desk. "Can't we stop fighting....."

"Mulder." she glared at him. "I'm not the one who starts the fights."

That was it. He couldn't take her attitude anymore. "Is it me?" he asked angrily. "You've been like this ever since I came back......." she wasn't looking at him. He grabbed her arm. "Damn it Scully! What did I do, tell me! Let me fix what I've done. I can't stand you being mad at me." The pain in his eyes was manifest.

Dana was so angry that she completely ignored the pain her was in. "How would you know what I was like before you came back!" she screamed. "I took you back Mulder, I let you back into my life, back into the X-Files. You asked me to forgive you, I did. You asked me to love you again, I never stopped. But don't ask me to forget about what happened. Don't ask me to forget about all of my pain." she pulled her arm away from his grasp. "It still hurts Mulder!"

"I'm sorry, damn it! I'm sorry........but what more can I do. Do you want me to leave?! Is that what you want?" his eyes were pleading with hers, but he saw no sign that she wanted to forgive him. "Please, tell me what you want from me. I can't stand all of this crap you keep putting me through. I'm almost afraid to touch you.......I'm afraid that your going to bite my arm off."

"It's hard enough to have other agent's talk about my mother and Skinner behind my back. They think that I can't hear them, but that's all I hear around her. These walls aren't made of iron. They are as thin as paper. But what's even worse......" she looked away from him. "The worse thing is hearing my own partner talking about me and my mother behind my back."

Mulder sighed and reached out to her. "Come here." he whispered. "Please. Let me hold you."

Dana shook her head and picked up her purse. "Not a chance." she yelled. "This is all a game to you isn't it? You think that you can come in here and make all of my pain go away with just a simple hug." she shook her head. "I don't heal that easily. I'm human, just like you. I feel pain and loss.......maybe you don't think I do, but I do. I'm not ice, I'm flesh and bone."

"Scully, I would give anything to have things how they used to be." he whispered. "How they were before we ever crossed the line between love and being in love.. We were so happy then. We hardly ever fought, we took care of one another. Now....." he shook his head. "Now we have nothing. We're like two strangers. Neither of us ever wants to tell the other what they are thinking or feeling. Why'd we do it? I loved you like you were my sister, damn, you were my best friend. I wish I could take back everything I ever said to you."

"I'd like things to be the way they were before we got separated." Dana whispered, the impact of his words were just sinking in.

Did he really regret telling her that he loved her? She had regretted telling him about her feelings, but she had never regretted a moment that they had spent together. His touch had always been like magic. Nothing could have changed the way she had felt.

"I liked our relationship when we first admitted our feelings for one another. It was so soft and gentle. Then...." she frowned thinking back to how things had suddenly changed. "And then everything got messed up." tears stung her eyes.

Mulder felt instantly sorry for her. He had never known that he'd caused her so much pain. He wished he could take back the words that he had just said. He hadn't really meant them. His anger had once again gotten the better of him.

"We can have things the way they used to be if you want." he smiled. "Please, can we try to make it work? There's so much that I don't know about you and would love to know. We can make it work if you want too."

Dana shook her head. "I don't think they can ever be that way again. But we can try." she moved into him so that he was holding her. "I like the feeling of being in your arms. I always have. You've always made me feel so safe and comfortable, it just hurts to feel like all of that time was a waste."

"Let's go back to your place." he suggested. "We can have a late dinner and talk."

"All right." she agreed, forgetting all about the mess that still lay in her apartment. "But you drive." she through him her car keys and headed out the door.

"This is not going as planned!" the Cancer Man cried. "Why is this taking so long, she should be finished off by now." he took a deep breath.

One of his *associates* stood up and looked out the window. "By trying the implantation experiment on her, we could accidentally cause her to access more information. You saw what happened to her last time we tried it.. I believe that we should just leave her alone until we get more information on this chip. Have *they* spoken to you Seth?"

The Cancer Man shook his head. "I don't speak to *them* anymore." he sighed thinking about the pretty woman who had been helping him out. "There is this woman...." he said carefully. "She's constantly around and has clearance to the project. I don't know where she came from, or who she works for, but she knows all about it and us."

Another man laughed. "I've seen her too. I'll bet that she was sent in here to make sure we carry out the project." he glanced over at a man standing further away. "She may look young, and be with out a name, but I assure you. She has a name and all names are accessible."

Seth nodded but he stopped when a sudden pain shot through his chest. He couldn't breath, his breath was coming out in short gasps. The room was beginning to dance around him as he tried to catch his breath. He could hear the other men calling out to him, but he couldn't move. Instead he fell to the ground. He thought her heard the sound of laughter floating around him, but it was too late. Darkness took it's toll.

Dana watched silently as Mulder and Evan joked about a case that they were investigating. She as beginning to feel left out, they were always going off and leaving her behind. When she confronted Mulder on it he just said that it was because she was so interested in finding his sister that he didn't want to bother her with any thing else.

"Guys." she mumbled. "Do you think that it could be possible to keep your voice down. Some of us are actually trying to work around here."

Mulder nodded. "Yeah sure.....sorry Scully." he smiled. "We'll try to remember that you need absolute silence next time."

"Mul....." Dana had begun to say, but was cut short by the ringing of a telephone. "Scully." she said.

"Agent Scully." as raspy voice on the other end said. "Would it be to much trouble for you to come and see me? I must speak to you at once and I do not have any time to waste."

She laughed. "Why the hell would I do that?" she asked. "You come to me."

The man coughed and right as he did, Dana knew that something was seriously wrong with the man. "Okay." she agreed. "Give me your location and I'll see what I can do." she was trying to hide the suspicion from her voice, but was doing a terrible job of it.

"JFK Memorial." he whispered. "I'm being guarded and people are watching my every move, but I have to speak with you." he coughed again. "It's about Samantha and the project that they are working on now. Please hurry." he coughed again.

There was a click and before she could say another word he was gone. She glanced up at Mulder who was in deep conversation with Evan. 'He doesn't want Mulder.' she thought. 'He wants to talk to you. SO don't even tell him.'

"Guy's would you mind if I left for this afternoon. There are a couple of things I have to do and I don't want to be out all night doing them. And since you don't seem to need me....."

Mulder nodded. "Sure. Have a nice time." he didn't even bother to look up.

"Okay." she muttered and with out giving them a second thought, left.

Mulder glanced back up to the chair that his partner had once occupied. "Did I say something wrong?" he asked. "I mean she seemed kind of mad at me when she left."

Evan shrugged. "I don't know her nearly as well as you do, but yes I think that she seemed mad, but no madder than usual. All I ever see is her bad side, so I wouldn't know what to expect if she smiled."

Mulder groaned and stood up. "I'll be back later. I need some air."

JFK Memorial Hospital
Washington DC
3:50 P.M.

Dana quietly walked down the corridor to the room where Seth Damain lie. She noticed a couple of guards watching her and it made her nervous. She stopped in front of one of them. "I need to see Mr. Damain." she said.

The guard laughed but didn't move. "And what makes you think that well let you in there, Agent Scully. Just because your with the FBI, it doesn't give you any authority to tell us what to do. We take order's from our surprise and Mr. Damain only."

Dana groaned. They knew who she was, she didn't know how they knew, but they knew. "He asked to see me."

"Let her by." she heard a voice call from the room.

The guards moved aside and let her by. Her breath caught as she caught the sight of the aging man. Even though she didn't care for him, she still felt sorry for him. He was hooked up to an oxygen mask and a heart monitor. He looked like he was in so much pain.

"I told you smoking was bad for your health." she said approaching his side. "And now look where it has gotten you. I always thought that you would pay attention to those surgeon general warnings on the cartons of cigarettes, but you never have."

The Cancer Man opened his eyes and smiled. "I've known of this for some time." he whispered. "I wasn't about to go through all of that crap. I don't think I could take Chemotherapy. My time has come and that's what I'll deal with." he moved the oxygen mask off of his nose and mouth. "I deserve what I get."

Dana nodded. "Where is she?" she asked. "I want to know where Samantha Mulder is, and I want to know right now. There's no way I'm going to let you die before I know the truth."

"I can't tell you." he motioned to the door. "But there is someone.....someone who you should fear more than you ever feared me." he closed his eyes. "She is waiting for me to die. Her purpose is so much greater than mine. She has to be stopped, you and your partner must stop her before anymore harm can come to Samantha Mulder. She won't protect Samantha and Fox like I have. No one will ever protect them the way I tried to protect them."

"Who is she? Have I seen her?"

"I don't know." he replied. "She never gave me a name and I only see her when she wants something from me." he smiled. "I wish that I could tell you more, but they wouldn't understand and I still have to protect Fox. When I die I pray that my secrets wont die....I want them revealed. Maybe not to the public, but to everyone who has searched for the truth....I'm not as heartless as you may think I am. I do know that what I have done is wrong, but I can't take it back and I'm not sure I'd want to."

"Why won't you just tell me!" she cried. "I'm so sick of this crap! I have a feeling that my time is short. What did I ever do to you? Please.....tell me where she is. If not for me but for Mulder."

He shook his head. "Maybe death makes you understand what life really is." he sighed. "You can't create life and you can't destroy it either. I will surely go to hell and I guess that's where I belong. I've killed men who have double crossed me, I have had them killed, but I now regret it all. I don't expect you to believe me, but I am sorry. I never wanted the job I got, I never wanted any of it. I would have settled down in a minute, but Bill Mulder got everything that I wanted. Including his wife. He had the perfect family and he wanted to protect them."

Dana didn't know why, but she believed the man. She believed that after all of his years of hiding secrets and causing so many others pain he was true remorseful for his deeds. "Tell me where she is."

"I can't Agent Scully. I always believed in the greater purpose, never in my friends. I wouldn't let Bill out, I wouldn't let him ruin me, so I made him pay. God, I wish now that I could take that back, if anything at all. Samantha will be returned and hopefully you will find her before they finish what they started." he reached for her hand. "Please find my daughter before they get to her again." he slipped the oxygen mask back on his face. "I've tried to protect her too, but I couldn't......I couldn't."

"I'll find her." she frowned. "But....you said that there was another. A woman. What about her?"

He pulled his mask off one last time. "She may try to come between you and Mulder. Or she could possibly wait until the time is right." he coughed. "Trust no one, Agent Scully. And I mean.....no...one." His heart monitor began to squeak and then it sung one high note.

Dana moved away from the bed and out the door. The guards didn't even notice that she left. They were to busy running for a doctor. Instead of heading back for her office, she drove. She didn't know where she was going, or why, but she drove.

Some how she found herself on the steps of Skinners house. She knew that he would not be home, but she sat down anyway. After what seemed like hours, Skinner pulled into his drive way.

"Agent Scully." he said. "Is something wrong. I was looking for you at work and Mulder said that you left for the day." he shifted uncomfortably. He didn't like the idea of her sitting all alone on his steps.

Dana nodded. "He's dead, sir." she stood up. "I went to the hospital and Seth Damain, Samantha Mulder's father, died. Now I'll never find her.....I always sensed that he was trying to help us, but his power had to much of a hold on him." she knew that what she had said was true. Seth's power had gotten the better of him. "Sometimes I think that people get to wrapped up in the swing of their everyday life to really care much about anyone or anything else."

Skinner opened his door and led her into the house. "I'm sorry." he said motioning for her to sit down. "But there's something I don't understand."

"What?" she didn't bother to look up at him.

"For a while now, I noticed that you and not Mulder, have been obsessed with finding Samantha." he paused. "Why? I always thought that it was more his search than yours, and now it almost seems like your the only one who cares. I've come to the conclusion that agent Mulder has lost interest with finding the truth.. Has something happened that I'm not aware of?"

"I know that what's been going on seems a little bit weird....." Dana admitted. "But the truth of the matter is that, I'm hoping that if I find her...... Mulder may just want to be with me again." she forced a smile.. "I miss him so much.....it hurts to be with him, but it hurts so much more to be with out him. I want things the way they used to be. The way things were before you closed down the X-files and separated us."

"Dana." Skinner hugged her. He always considered her as his special responsibility. They had so much in common. He could understand how it felt to be alone, to feel alone.

He had known that his two best agents were having problems, that was why he had assigned Agent Evan to the X-Files. He was hoping that the two agents would decide to settle down and let up on their investigations just enough so that he could bring in more agents to make it a regular division.

"I want a transfer." Dana said suddenly, snapping Skinner out of his reverie. "Please....let me transfer to somewhere far away. Away from the X-files, away from Mulder and everyone else."

"Are you sure you really want that?" he asked. "I know that you two will work things out if you just talk to one another."

Dana shook her head. "Don't you think I've tried talking to him? He has a better partnership with Agent Evan than he ever had with me. Maybe I'm getting to old for the FBI. I just want out while I'm still young enough to leave."

Skinner sighed. There was no use in trying to talk her out of it. "Dana, If I transfer you to another division will you do me a favor?"

She nodded, "Yes."

"I want you to talk to Mulder and I want you both to be part of this decision. I don't want agent Mulder coming to me and blaming me for your transfer. I want you to talk to him. You need to talk to him."

"All right." she agreed. "But your going to have to do me a favor too."

"What?" he was almost afraid to ask.

"Take care of my mother. If something happens to me, don't let her mourn over me.....I don't deserve it and it will only cause her more pain than she needs."

Skinner nodded. "All right, but you have to promise me that nothing will happen to you. I don't want to have to be the one telling her that he daughter is dead."

Mulder's Apartment
8:30 P.M.

"I was wondering what happened to you guys." Mulder said letting Frohike, Langly and Byers pass into his apartment. "Where the hell did you guys go?"

Frohike pushed past him and ran to the window. "Dana sent us away." he replied. "Some guys trashed her apartment looking for the disk and she got worried about us and made us leave. "

"We went to Boston to see a friend about a couple of things." Langly explained. "And when we got back our place had been trashed so we came here."

Mulder nodded, "Have you guys talked to Scully?" he asked. "I can't get a hold of her and I have to talk to her."

Frohike shook his head. "You too fight more than most married couples. It's amazing that you two have stayed together this long." he grinned. "Maybe you two need to see other people."

Mulder looked at the small man with disgust. " Who? Someone like you?" he asked.

Frohike nodded, but then changed his mind. "No. Actually I was just joking around."

"I happen to love her." Mulder said calmly. "We just need to learn how to communicate with out raising our voices. I'm sure that well be able to do that if I every corner her long enough to talk to her."

Changing the subject, Langly tossed Mulder the disk that Dana had given them. "We came to drop this off.. Our place is probably bugged and they may have set a virus off in our system to erase the disk. We can't risk that so we figured that you could keep it until we made sure everything was safe.."

"We have to re-wire, re-circuit, and check over everything before we put that thing into our system." Byers complained. "Let's just pray that they aren't as smart as we are and didn't think about destroying or tapping our system."

Mulder groaned. "You guys are so paranoid. Do you really think that they put a tap on your computer? I'm sure that they have better things to do."

Frohike shrugged, "I wouldn't put it pass them. They did shoot us remember?"

"Good point." Mulder sat down on his small coffee table. "So is there something else. You guys are just standing there. If something is wrong then spit it out. I really don't have all night."

Byer's cleared his throat. "No, we just thought we'd stop by to see how everything was going with you. Just promise that you won't tell Scully that we're back. She may not be to happy about it since she threatened us."

"To late." Dana said from behind. She had used Mulders key and let herself inside. "Frohike I'm surprised at you. You went against my wishes."

He laughed. "We had to come back. We couldn't leave you all by yourself with these creeps running around."
Dana nodded and focused her attention on Mulder. "Seth Damain is dead." she informed him.

"What?" Mulder asked not sure that he had heard her correctly. "Who's dead?"

"The Cancer Man. That call I got earlier was from Seth. He wanted to see me. I went to the hospital." she paused. "He wouldn't tell me where Samantha was, but he did say a bunch of things that I'm starting believe."

Mulder glanced up at Frohike who was as equally curious as he was. "What else did he say?"

"He was very sincere. I almost felt sorry for him. He asked me to find Samantha before they did what ever they were going to do to her. I think that he was sorry for what he did to your father and he said that at one time there may have been a time when he would have settled down to have a family. He loved your mother. I know it sounds funny, but I believe that he is sorry."

"I don't believe this." Mulder mumbled. "I can't believe that you believed him. He obviously was just trying to ease his soul before he died. I doubt that he feels any sympathy towards any of his victims or towards my family. Man, Scully what's with you?" he couldn't believe what he was hearing. "You didn't even like him so why the hell are you making excuses for him. He doesn't deserve any sympathy."

"Is that so wrong to want feel remorse for what he did?" she asked. "Just because he was a man, and he was only a man Mulder, men make mistakes. I'm not making any excuses for him. Yes, I admit that he caused a lot of people pain. He took me, he took your sister, he had your father killed, he did a lot of other things. But I believed that he was sorry...."

"Scully! Damn, trust me! He wasn't sorry."

He had just set himself up for what she had truly been feeling. All of the pain and truth came out. "I don't trust you." she whispered. "I don't trust anyone but myself." tears stung her eyes as she spoke. "I can't trust you Mulder." she looked down at her feet. "I've asked Skinner for a transfer. I don't want you to argue with me, Mulder.....I want to transfer and there isn't a thing you can do about it."

Four sets of eyes focused on her as she spoke. "What?" Mulder cried. His eyes were blazed over with fury. "Scully, we're partners. We belong together." he couldn't believe he was hearing this. After all they had been through, she wanted out and he was damned if he was going to let her leave with out a fight.

"Oh, cut the crap Mulder! We belong together about as much as vinegar and water. Haven't you noticed how we never get along. Nothing seems fair anymore. Your search suddenly became my search and it almost seems like you've lost interest." she backed away towards the door. "Now I'm the one putting my life on the line, I'm the one searching for someone who is probably dead, who has probably been dead for over twenty five years. I don't know how things got so carried away between us."

That did it. Now he was mad. "I haven't lost interest!" Mulder screamed. "You've taken over. Everyone wants to talk to you about my sister's disappearance. The disk wasn't given to me, the Cancer Man didn't want to talk to me, and the guys." he motioned to Frohike and the others. "They don't listen to me anymore, they listen to you and you never even liked them."

"What!" Dana turned to Frohike. "That's not true. I'm very grateful to you for what you've been doing. You've been putting your life on the line, and for what, Mulder." she turned back to Mulder. "So, Mulder don't tell me that I've taken over. Everything that I've ever done has been for you. Everything I do is for you. I'd die for you Mulder. I've lied for you, I've put my job, my life and my families lives on line for you, so don't you dare say that I don't care. I think that we should end this while we still have the chance. I don't want to have to keep worrying about you and your stupid sister."

"Scully, Dana......I'm sorry. Please let's not fight. I never said that you didn't care." Mulder felt his heart breaking. He was losing her. She backed towards the hall way. "I love you! Please.......don't leave me."

"You can't love me!" she cried. "You can't love me because there is always something that you're going to love more than me." she put her hand on the door knob. "The truth is more important to you. You once said that the truth was all that mattered and I know I can never replace that, or your sister. No matter how much I've prayed and tried to get you to love me, you never have given me one-hundred percent." she pushed the door open. "I'll continue to search for your sister........but not with you."

Mulder lunged forward and grabbed her by the arm. "Your not leaving until we get something straight." he pushed her against the wall roughly. "You got that Agent Scully."

"Hey Mulder!" Frohike called. "Maybe you should let her go." He didn't wan to pry but it looked like her was hurting her.

"Stay out of this Frohike." Mulder yelled. "This has nothing to do with you." his grip on Scully's arm tightened.

"Hey, Frohike's right." Langly said laying a hand on his friends shoulder. "Your hurting her. Let her go."

Mulder shrugged him away, "Stay out of this." He growled. "This is between me and Scully."

"Let go of me!" Dana screamed. "Your going to break my arm." tears filled her eyes, but she didn't even notice. "Does the truth hurt Mulder?"

"No! Your everything that matters to me!" he whispered. "We can search together.....your just making this hard on yourself. Not me. You know that your my truth. You always have been and always will be."

"If I'm all that matters, why are you hurting me?" she reached for her gun but Mulder grabbed her other arm and force it against the wall. "Let go." she tried to twist out of his grasp but he towered over her. "Please."

"Dana, I love you. You know how much I love you.....please. God, please let's just talk this over and be rational."

Dana shook her head. "Never." she gritted her teeth and pushed him as hard as she could, but he still did not budge.

"Mulder." Frohike yelled. "Let go of her!" he grabbed Mulder's shoulder.

Mulder turned to look at him. "Get out!" he screamed. "Get out!"

Frohike jumped and did as he was told. He took one last look at Scully, then left, followed by Langly and Byers.

"Please." Dana pleaded. "Please, let me go. I'm sorry Mulder." tears were now escaping her eyes and a sudden reality hit Mulder.

He pulled his hands away from her and jumped back. "Oh my God." he closed his eyes. "I'm sorry....God, What did I just do?" His anger had turned into fury and in return he had hurt the woman he loved. "God, I'm turning into my father."

Dana straightened up her blouse and backed into the corner. "It's all right Mulder." she sighed. "That little thing just proved my point." she picked her purse up off the floor. "Maybe one day we can put our differences aside and make this work, make us work. But we can't do that until you find what your looking for."

"Dana, please. I can't work with out you."

She laughed. "You seem to be doing a good job of working with Agent Evan."

"Is that what this about?" he asked. "Is this about my working relationship with Agent Evan?"

"This has nothing to do with her." Dana yelled. "Damn it! Mulder, we need some space. I want to transfer, but only to the Violent Crime Division. It's just another office a couple floors up. I'll still be there, I'll still search for your sister, but I can't work with you. I'll always be here when and if you need to talk. Maybe we can get things back on track if we're separated."

Mulder nodded, but didn't believe it. "Maybe we should just end it in the all." he suggested. "If that's what you really want, maybe we should just end it. You go back to Boston and I'll continue my search here in DC. "

Dana thought a minute. She loved Mulder, she loved him more than anything else in the world. She didn't really want to end everything. She looked up at him with tears in her eyes. She couldn't let it all end. "I....I don't want that." she whispered. "I really don't want to leave the X-Files, but if that's the way it has to be....then." she headed towards the door.

Mulder reached out and pulled her to his chest. "Don't transfer." he pleaded. "I'll give you space. Just don't transfer."

Dana pulled away so that she was looking into his eyes. "You know, there's no way I can just leave you. We've been through so much and no matter how much I try to forget about it, there is always one thing that keeps reminding me that were meant to be together." she ran a hand over his cheek.

"What is that?" he asked softly, feeling the warmth of her fingers on his cheek.

"Our search......" she gently pulled him to her. "Mulder, it's not just yours, it's as much mine as ever. I want us to be friends. Do you think that we can be friends."

Mulder nodded and pulled away. "If friends is all that we can manage, then yes.....we can be friends."

"And partners?" she asked.

"Yes." he whispered.

Dana smiled and opened the door. "I have to get going, but......" her voice trailed off as she suddenly remembered something the Cancer man had told her.

He glanced back to her. "What?"

"Seth said that there was someone taking his place. He didn't know her name, but he told us to watch out for her."

Mulder groaned. "A *her*?" he asked. "Damn, lets pray that she's a little easier than he was."

"I some how doubt that, but we can only hope. Right." she glanced down at her watch. "I need to get going. Call me if you need anything."

"All right." Mulder agreed and watched her leave.

JFK Memorial Hospital
Intensive Care Unit
2:40 AM.

Dana turned away from Mulder and back to Frohike. "When I look at him, I see me. I was in that bed, in a coma. I know that he's been hurt before......but never, never like this." she took Mulder's hand into hers. "If he dies, I don't know what I'm going to do."

"You can come work with us." Frohike suggested. "I know that we're not the FBI and we are a little strange, but I think that it could work. Come on Dana, what do you say."

She smiled, "That's a great offer, but I don't think so." she sat down. "I'm going to stick with the X-Files. I know that a lot of the cases have just suddenly been wrapped up with the evidence found in the factory, but there are still hundreds of cases that need to be solved and there is still that group of men who suddenly disappeared with out a trace. I can't let all of that go. Mulder wouldn't want me to and to be honest with you, I don't want to let it go either."

Frohike nodded. "Yeah, well I guess I should get going. I'll come by tomorrow to see how they are." he hugged her. "Are you going to be all right?"

"Yeah, I just want to sit with him a while longer. I know that he won't wake up, but I just have to be with him. I want to be with him. He's the only person that I can picture spending my whole life with."

She watched Frohike leave, then turned her attention back to Mulder. "I won't leave you." she whispered.

A sudden wave of exhaustion washed over her. Burying her head in the blankets of Mulder's bed, she fell asleep.
