Samantha jumped as the door to her cell opened. She was expecting to see her father, but instead it was a woman she remembered seeing sometime earlier that month.

"Expecting someone else?" the woman snapped seeing the look of disgust cross Samantha's face.

Samantha shook her head and squinted from the bright light. "No....I wasn't expecting to see anyone. It's got to be at least one o'clock in the morning. I didn't think anyone would even remember me at this time. I kind of like it that way. I don't have to worry about you guys poking me with needles."

The woman laughed and pulled out an envelope. "Your father is dead." she announced. "So I am his replacement....there will be no more special treatment for you. You had Seth wrapped around your little finger."

Samantha flinched. She hadn't liked the man who claimed to be her father, but she was grateful that he had kept them away from her for so long. She knew that he was constantly fighting over whether or not to do the implant project and now.......she didn't even wan to think about what they might do to her.

"Do you think that bothers me?" she asked. "It doesn't. I don't care what happens to any of you people. You can keep me locked up forever and I could care less. I probably don't even have any family that remembers me."

The woman laughed again. "My dear, your family affairs are no concern of mine." she pulled out a needle and a small vile. "But I promise you may look for your mother and brother once we are finished with you."

"Will tell me one thing?" Samantha asked, moving further away from the woman. "What is my brother doing? Is he happy? I just need to know if he's all right."

"Your brother is fine, and will be very happy when I get through with him." she with drew a small amount of liquid from the vile.

"If you touch him....." Samantha paused. "So help me God. If you touch him, I will find away out of here and tell every person I can find about your secret government that only a few selected men know about. Your shady government organization won't be around when I get finished with my story. I won't rest until I find someone that believes me. Some one will too. I believe."

The woman shook her head and jabbed the needle into Samantha's neck. "You and that brother of yours are two peas in a pod. No one will ever doubt that you are Fox Mulder's sister." she gently pushed the end of the syringe. "That should keep you out for a couple of days." she mumbled. "And when You awake you will remember nothing."

Samantha's eye lids grew heavy and a thick cloud of darkness surrounded her. Once again the image of her brother flashed before her. The woman she had dreamt about before was still at his side, but something was wrong. The woman was holding Fox up. Her brothers eyes were rolled back in his head and his white shirt was drenched with a red liquid. He began to reach out for somebody and suddenly she saw herself appear before him. She was running and the woman at her brother's side quickly jumped out and pushed her down, but it was to late.........

St. Peter Catholic Church
11:30 A.M.

"Dana?" Mulder called through an open doorway. The wedding was about to start and Margaret had gotten worried and sent him to look for her daughter.

"Scully, where are you?" he walked further down the church corridor until he came to the woman's bathroom. "Scully?" he pressed his ear against the door. He was almost sure that he heard crying.

Taking a risk, he pushed the door open to find his partner huddled up in the corner. "Scully!" he cried rushing over to her side. "What's wrong, are you hurt?" he kneeled down next to her.

"I'm fine." she looked up at him. "I just.....I can't go out there." she shook her head. "I can't go out there and show my mother and Skinner support when I don't support them. It just doesn't seem fair."

"Why?" he asked. "Why can't you be happy for your mother. Why can't you be happy that she's in love? So....she's getting married again. It doesn't mean that she loved your father any less." he gently touched her cheek. "She and Skinner deserve to be happy together......just give them a chance. I'm sure that everything will work out."

Dana nodded but made no attempt to stand up or even look at him. "She's so lucky. I just......I......." she sighed. There was no point in finishing, she knew that her words would not be heard.

"You what?" Mulder asked softly. "What do you want? You know that you can tell me. That's what friends are for."

She shook her head and stood up. "What I want isn't important.......so forget I mentioned anything. Finding your sister is everything that matters to me."

Dana knew that Mulder didn't believe her. The truth was that she wanted to have the kind of love her mother and Skinner had. She wanted a husband and a family, she wanted to be the one going down the isle. She wanted to marry Mulder, but she knew that he would never ask her. It wasn't in him. He wasn't the type of man who could be a father or a husband. He was the type of man who would never be ready to commit. His idea of a relationship would be a week cruse in the Caribbean and then a kiss good bye.

"He isn't the marring type." she had told her mother one night when she had asked about their involvement with one another. "Besides, he won't ever love me until he finds his sister. He can't love me until he finishes his search......and then maybe he'll love me, but even then there are no guarantees. It's just not in him to commit right now. I just don't seem like his type. I'm used to seeing him with girls who are tall with blond hair and a bibonic personality."

Margaret Scully had not agreed with her daughter, but didn't press the subject any further. She had always known how much Dana loved Fox. She had known that they were in love even before they had admitted it themselves. In all the years of her life she had never met a more perfect man for her daughter than Fox. She had always felt a certain emotional attachment to him, it was almost like he was her son.

"What ever you believe." Margaret had replied, but not with out hesitation. "I just hope that you don't believe that forever. Fox loves you and you may end up paying for your actions. I know that I can't change anything between you two......" she paused. "But it almost seems like you and Fox love each other so much that your afraid to be honest with one another. I could be wrong, but it's so apparent when you two are around each other. You should try sitting down and talking..........you'd be surprised at how much that works."

She had tried to explain to her mother that talking with Mulder was no good, but her mother wouldn't listen. She was to busy trying to argue her point and out of anger and frustration, Dana had given up and left her mother still rambling..

Mulder reached out and grabbed her hand, snapping her back to the present. "No tell me. Something has been bothering you for a long time and I want to know what it is. We can fight all you want, but I'm going to find out what's bothering you, Scully."

"Mulder, nothing is bothering me." she pulled her hand free and reached for the door. "Let's get this over with, we can talk later."

Knowing that they would never really talk about what was bothering her, Dana made her way down the hall and to the small chapel.

'Some day.' she thought sadly. 'Someday I'll find the right time and tell him what's bothering me.'

JFK Memorial Hospital
5:30 A.M.

Mrs. Mulder walked into her son's room to find Dana curled up next to him. A sudden wave of sadness washed over her as she watched her son sleep.

She walked up to the small woman by her son and placed a hand on her arm, "Dana." she said softly. "Dana wake up."

Dana opened her eyes and quickly crawled off Mulder's bed. She couldn't remember when she had curled up next to him, the last thing she remember was holding Mulder's hand and talking to Frohike.

"I'm sorry." she sniffed. "I guess I must have fallen asleep." she made little effort to smile.

"It's all right dear." Mrs. Mulder said. "I asked the nurse where I could find you and she said that I'd find you in here. " she pulled up a chair and sat down. "On the phone, you sounded really distracted. Is there something you haven't told me about, something about what happened?"

Dana looked down at her hands and nodded. She still hadn't seen Samantha and didn't know what to expect. There was nothing she could say to prepare Mrs. Mulder for the shock she was about to receive.

"Come with me." she whispered and led Mulder's mother down the hall to a room just outside the nurses station. "I know that this may sound really strange....." she began. "And I know that this is shocking and.....I really don't know how to tell you this." she pushed the door open . "But Mulder search has finally ended.......we found Samantha." she held her breath and closed her eyes.

'This has to be the hardest thing I've ever had to do.' she thought.

Mrs. Mulder grabbed the door frame. "What happened to her!" she wanted to rush to her daughters side, but something held her back. "My God!" she covered her face with her hands, "Her head........Dana what happened to her head?"

"I tried to pull her down, but I was to late. The doctor said that it's not as bad as it looks. She should recover nicely." with out hesitation she pushed Mrs. Mulder through the door. "Mulder and Skinner got to her just in time before they did their little experiment." she sighed. "I just wish I had gotten to them in time, If I had they wouldn't have been shot. Maybe they wouldn't have even gotten hurt. It really is all my fault"

Mrs. Mulder gently took Samantha's hand. "Sam." she whispered. "Samantha...it's me. Open your eyes."

Samantha opened her eyes and focused on her mother. "Mama." she cried. "mamma....." tears welled up in her hazel eyes.

Dana watched as they hugged and exchanged tears.. She couldn't stop staring at Samantha. Her eyes. Her eyes we identical to Mulder's. They had the same face structure and skin color....Samantha's appearance brought tears to her eyes.

Samantha pulled away from her mother and looked up at Dana. A sudden image struck her. "It was you!" she cried. "You were the one in my dreams. You were the one standing next to Fox."

Dana smiled. "Maybe." she said. "But I don't stand next to your brother very often. He and I were......" she paused realizing that Mulder wasn't dead yet. "Are partners, but our differences have kept us from doing our job." she went over to Mulder's mother and handed her a small picture. The one Mulder had given her of Samantha. "I don't need this anymore.....Mulder, Fox, asked me to keep it safe and it rightfully belongs to you. Not me."

Samantha took it from her mother's hand and ripped it up. "That's the past." she said. "I prefer that we don't think about it." she moved over so that Dana could sit down next to her. "How is Fox?" she asked.

"I don't know." she replied. "But your brother is a fighter. There's no way he's going to die before he finally grasps what he's been searching for all of these years." tears stung her eyes. "He's never stopped searching for you......he never once gave up his search. His search for you brought him all over the world. He was hunted by men that.......that are so indescribable. The truth was all......all......." he voice caught in her throat. "All that ever ..mattered."

Dana hunched forward and buried her head in her hands. She felt strong arms wrap around her and she leaned into them. She wanted Mulder back. She didn't care about anything else.

"I don't think that he could ever love anything more than you." Samantha whispered. "I saw your love in my dreams. You were his strength. You were always holding him up when he was about to fall down and give up. Even in my last dream, you were still his strength even though you were all beaten and bloody." she moved away. "Your will must be a strong one or he would have given up on you along time ago. You were always moving with him."

Samantha once again drifted off into a deep, drugged sleep. Her dreams were too powerful to be regular dreams, she had decided that they were visions. Once again, for the tenth time, she dreamt of her brother. Each time he appeared with a smaller woman. The woman's hair was like fire, her eyes were crystal blue, and Samantha was almost positive that the woman was Mulder's strength and courage that made him press on wards.

She doubted that the woman really existed, but her brother seemed to be depending on the woman. His every step matched hers and her every step seemed to be a struggle. He was always leaning on her, she was always supporting him with one of her arms and the other held a gun. But the gun was never pointed at anyone. It was always drawn, but down at the woman's side.

In one dream Samantha saw that her brother was shot and yet the woman still supported him. She moved with him like a flame dancing over a candle. The woman's eyes always remained focused on a point that she, herself, Samantha, could not see, but knew existed. Sometimes she wanted to turn around to see what the woman was staring at, but she never could. She could never bring herself to look at anything other than her brother and the woman.

The dream she dreamt now was very different from all of her other dreams. The woman was now bloody and crying. Samantha had never once seen the woman with an injury, but now the woman seemed to be broken. Her eyes didn't seem to focus on anyone or anything but Fox. Even though she looked as if she could go no further she still supported Fox. Taking one slow step at a time guiding him somewhere, anywhere, anywhere out of the darkness that always seemed to engulf them.

Each time Samantha tried to reach out to them, but they had seen her only once and even then it had been to late. Each time she could hear only one phrase. "I want to believe." and then there was silence. Only silence. A deathly silence.

Dana climbed out of her car and knocked on the window of a near by parked car. Earlier that day she had gotten a anonymous phone call, from an unknown source, stating that they knew the whereabouts of Agent Mulder's sister.

At first she hadn't believed him, but something the man had said stuck with her. The man had stated that Samantha was being held for experimentation reasons and would be returned the day after Mulder's birthday. At the time she hadn't thought much of it, but when she began looking through the files that the Lone Gunmen had given her she had made the connection and agreed to meet the man. She had made her own arrangements as well. Frohike and the guys had agreed to watch her apartment just in case it was another trick.

Under normal circumstances she would have called someone to back her up, only this time she trusted the man. She knew that Mulder would protest to her going alone, but she had to do it. She had to prove herself to Mulder....she had to prove that she was worthy of him and that she cared just as much as he did.

The man in the car was half hidden by the nights shadows. "It's nice to see you again agent Scully." he said opening the back door for her.

Dana vaguely recognized the mans voice. "Do you have it?" she asked. "If this is another excuse to trash my apartment then you can go to hell because there are people watching my apartment. I'm not that stupid this time."

The man laughed and handed her a thick envelope. "This is a detailed description of the implant experiment. They believe that they fixed the flaw that ruined their first experiment. Samantha is the only one that they can perform their test on. Her chemistry is remarkable." the man motioned for her to get in.

Dana nodded and slid in to the front seat. "What do you mean?" she asked. "How is she different from you and I?"

"They have improved their procedure a lot since the time they implanted the chip in Samantha Mulder's neck. Although they were unable to reproduce the exact chip the researchers believe that they have fixed their flaw. Most of their other test subjects have come down with incurable cancers and deadly side affects. Most have died." he turned to look at her. "But of course you already know that. You seem to be one of the lucky ones. You've never been sick a day in your life."

"You never explained how Samantha's chemistry was different from our own. You just told me something that I already knew. I don't like people who don't get to the point. It's very annoying."

The man nodded. "Be patient. I was getting to that part." he paused. "The chip malfunctioned and it gave her some sort of power. Almost as if she were able to see into the future. They want to reverse the process and try to erase her memory permanently. That means she will have no memory of her family at all."

Dana nodded. "So when is this supposed to take place?" she asked. "Am I too late? Or can I still stop it from happening."

"I'm not really sure, but it is supposed to take place sometime this week. She will be moved to their facility and the best time to make your move would be when they are doing so." he replied. "The woman authorizing the experiment goes by the name E.E. I found this outside the Greenwall Factory last night." he handed her a bracelet.

Dana took it and opened the car door. "Thanks, but I don't know how this is supposed to help me...." she began to walk away, but stopped and turned back to the man. "I guess that all of Mulder's sources can't be bad."

The man didn't say anything. Instead he drove off before she could even close the door.

"This is crazy!" Samantha cried as a woman tied her arms and legs. "I'm not going to go anywhere. I really don't think restraining me is going to do any good."

The woman shrugged and pulled the ropes tighter. "I don't want you getting any ideas." she said. "And knowing you, you'll get a bad idea. Although, you'll probably get yourself killed in the process."

"How can I get any idea's if you keep drugging me the way you've been doing for the past month and a half." she managed to pull one of her hands free. "What are you going to do to me? I'm sick of being chained up in here. If your going to kill me, do it. I can't stand this anymore."

"You won't have to wait much longer." the woman replied. "Just another week and then we'll be finished with you." she grabbed Samantha's hand again and tied it back up. Then she pulled out a small syringe and gently poked her arm.

"This should make you sleep better."

Samantha didn't fight it. She had learned not to fight the woman's shots. Every time she did, she found herself falling deeper and deeper into a dark sleep. Deciding to let it take it's affects, she curled up the best she could and slept.

Mulder glanced over the file he was reading to watch his partner. They had hardly spoken for the past month and her silence was beginning to bother him. Taking a chance he stood up and walked over to her desk.

"You want to call it quits and go get something to eat. Erin won't be back for a couple of hours and we can kill some time."

Dana shook her head. "No, there's still a lot that I have to get done. Don't forget I'm going to Boston tomorrow." she looked up at him. "I hate these dumb Forensics Pathology labs. They treat you like you don't know what your doing and it drives me crazy. I don't even know why Skinner suggested that I go. I'll probably mess up and get sent back to Quantico and lose the X-files."

Mulder laughed and shook his head. "That's the last thing that you'll do. I doubt that you've ever messed up anything in your life."

"You know how many times I've messed up Mulder, so cut the crap." she mumbled then looked back down at her work. She hadn't been able to tell him about her meeting with the man he called X and she wasn't sure if she wanted too. Things had been so bad between them that lately, that she didn't want to make them any worse.

"You go a head and go. Don't let me keep you."

He was about to protest, but stopped when Agent Evan walked in.

"Am I interrupting something?" she asked.

Mulder shook his head and smiled. "Would you like to go out to lunch." he motioned to Scully. "It seems that our partner here doesn't want go with me and I'm about to die of starvation."

Dana shook her head and pulled out a bag of sunflower seeds. "Here Mulder." she through him the bag. I little peace and quiet would be nice."

Mulder ignored her and turned back to Agent Evan. "So how 'bout it?"

"Okay." she smiled. "But I need to stop by my place to grab a couple of things. How about I meet you there..?"

"All right." he agreed. "Where do you want to go......." his voice trailed off when he noticed Scully staring at them. "What?" he asked. He was trying not to laugh but the look she was giving him was absolutely hilarious.

That was it! Dana stood up and grabbed her purse. "Mulder! I asked you to be quiet. I have a lot of work to do and your not helping. I pray to God that I fail my physical evaluation and if I do I won't be back."

Mulder glanced at Agent Evan and then down at his feet. "Sorry about that." he muttered. "Scully can be a little testy at times."

"You two are involved outside of work, aren't you?" she asked. "I've noticed that you don't act like most partners and I have heard some rumors....." she paused trying to see if she was being to personal, but no reaction came.

Mulder just simply shrugged and grabbed his jacket. "I'll meet you at Harris's in an hour. I'm going to go see if there's anything to salvage in my and Scully's working relationship."

Agent Evan smiled as Mulder left. 'He's right where I want him.' she thought happily. 'Just a couple more days and everything will be over.'

Mulder looked up as Agent Evan's approached. He couldn't help but notice how distracted she looked.

"Is something wrong?" he asked nervously. The first thing that came to mind was Scully. 'Oh, God.' he thought. 'Something has happened to Scully.'

Agent Evan shook her head and sat down. "My dad gave me a bracelet for my sixteenth birthday and I lost it. I've looked everywhere for it. I guess it 's gone."

Mulder smiled with relief, but still felt bad for the woman. "It must have been special." he said. "I know how little pieces of jewelry can keep you going." he thought back to the time Scully had disappear and he had found her gold cross in the trunk of a car.

He had wore her necklace then, trying to keep what meant the most to him close to his heart. It had been her strength that kept him going. It had been her strength in the cross that pressed him to go forward and not give up hope. He had never asked her what happened to the cross. He hadn't seen her wearing it since he came back and he wasn't sure why.

"He was the only person that cared about me." Agent Evan said interrupting his thoughts. "I miss him."

"I'm sure it will show up." Mulder said thoughtfully. "Have you checked every place you've been?" he asked.

She nodded. "Yeah but it hasn't been anywhere I've checked." she smiled. "But......let's not let this ruin our lunch. What's good?"

Mulder laughed and glanced back down at his menu. "Everything. Scully and I used to eat here all the time." he paused. "I guess that you've guessed that Scully and I have been having problems with our partnership."

Evan nodded and looked up at him. "It's not easy to work with all the tension you put out. You guys need to lighten up and stop acting so serious all the time. I'm beginning to feel like I'm the only one in the whole bureau who doesn't know what's going on between you two. Could you possibly feel me in."

Her fishing for information made Mulder laugh. "You've been with us for five months and you still don't know what's going on?"

She shook her head. "No......every time I try to talk to someone they always tell me to ask you or Agent Scully. I've heard bits and pieces about your sister's disappearance, about your fake death, about Scully's disappearance, about your so-called personal relationship. What's the deal with you two anyway."

Mulder sighed and stood up. "I'm really not in the mood to talk about my relationship with Agent Scully." he through down a couple of bills. "I'll see you back at the office, enjoy your lunch."

10:13 A.M.

Dana sat silently studying the bracelet that the man had given her. E.E.. What did E.E. stand for? She leaned back against the head rest and studied the small object.

She had thought about calling Mulder, but decided against it. She hated herself for not telling Mulder about what they planned to do to his sister but she wasn't even sure she truly trusted the man who had told her. All she had was a small bracelet that could have been any ones.
Deciding that it was time to get ready for a long day of tiring meetings and workshops she stood up and walked to the bathroom. It was well past ten in the morning and she was beginning to curse herself for not getting up earlier.

"Agent Scully." someone called through her bedroom door.

Dana turned off the sink. "Yeah?" she called and opened the door.

"AD Skinner is on the phone and says that it's important."

Dana nodded and walked over to the phone. "Sir." she said picking up the receiver. "Has something happened to my mother or Mulder?" fear suddenly took over her restlessness.

The director cleared his throat. "No." he replied. "But we've seemed to lost track of Agent Evan. Mulder said that she'd been acting really strange the past couple of days and when we confronted her she left in a panic."

"Sir.....I'm not sure what you want me to do about it." she mumbled. "I do not control Erin Evan and I don't plan too. Agent Evan and I have nothing in common. She's Mulder's partner. They get along better than he and I do." she was about to hang up but something suddenly struck her.

"Agent Scully are you still there?" Skinner asked.

Dana didn't reply. She was busy looking down at the bracelet on the night stand. 'E.E.' she thought. 'Erin Evan.' A sudden serge of panic washed over her.

"Sir!" she cried. "Sir she's one of them." her heart began to race at the thought of Mulder being there with her.

Skinner laughed. "Agent Scully I checked her out thoroughly before I paired her with you two. She's clean."

Dana shook her head and took a deep breath. "A couple of nights ago I met with one of Mulder's sources. He said that they were planning on doing their test on Samantha some time this week. I sort of pushed it out of my mind and never told Mulder." she paused. "He said that he followed the head of the project and found that it was a woman. He gave me a bracelet that he found. It had her initials on it. E.E. I thought it looked familiar but I couldn't figure out where I had seen it."

She heard Skinner groan. "You never told agent Mulder?" he asked.

"No." Dana replied and hung up before Skinner could say another word. She got dressed as quick as she could and rushed out of the hotel. Not bothering to even tell anyone she was leaving.

Assistant Director Skinner slammed down the phone and hurried down the hall. "Jenn!" he yelled. "Get my wife on the phone and tell her that I won't be home for dinner." he paused. "Hell! Tell her I won't be home until tomorrow. tell her I had a meeting, but don't say anything to worry her."

Jenn nodded as he ran past then picked up the phone to dial Margaret's number.

Skinner ran as fast as he could to Mulder's office and didn't bother to knock. He pushed the door open and rushed in.

Mulder glanced up with surprise. "Sir." he cried. "Is something wrong."

Skinner nodded, trying to catch his breath. "I just called Dana." he choked. "At first she didn't seem to care about Agent Evan's irrational behavior, but....." he couldn't catch his breath.

"But what?"

"She thinks that Agent Evan is one of *them*." he pulled up a chair and sat down. "I don't remember what she was saying, but she was going on about *them* doing some experiment on your sister tonight or sometime this week."

Mulder stood up, knocking his chair over as he did so. Everything was now beginning to fall into place. He suddenly realized why Scully had been acting so strange.

"Why didn't she tell me about this before?!" he cried. His anger was almost overwhelming. "Samantha could be in danger and I don't even know where she is." he grabbed his jacket. "I'll bet Scully knows where she is."

Skinner nodded, "She hung up before I could ask her anything else."

Mulder felt a sudden serge of panic wash over him. Samantha was finally at his fingertips and yet she was out of reach. He couldn't let *them* get away again. There was no way in heel he was going to let *them* get away again.

Quick Time Copy and Fax
Butterfield, Mass.

Dana jumped out of her car, carrying the file Mr. X had given her. She had tried to call Skinner back to tell him the location of Samantha, but Jenn had told her that he had just stepped out.

She pushed the door to the Quick Copy and Fax open and rushed in. "I need a fax machine!" she screamed and showed the man behind the counter her badge. "It really important."

The man nodded and open the door so that she could reach the machine. "Do you know how to use it?" he asked.

Dana through him a look of pure annoyance and nodded. Then turned to the machine and punched in Mulder's and Skinner's personal fax numbers. 'Please.' she prayed 'Please let them get these.'

Once the fax was ready to go she dialed Mulder's cellular. After two rings he answered.

"Mulder." he muttered.

Dana took a deep breath. "Mulder! It's me." she said. "I'm faxing you the file Mr. X gave me on your sister's whereabouts."

"Scully!" Mulder screamed. "I'll never forgive you for this! Never!"

She could hear the tears in his voice.. She suddenly felt terrible for keeping everything from him. Her partner. Her lover. The man she loved. She knew then and there that he would never trust her again and she didn't blame him. Samantha would probably die because of her.

"Mulder, I'm so sorry." she choked. Tears stung her eyes. "Please. Now isn't the time to fight. I'm still not sure when all off this is going to take place and we don't have much time."

"Damn you!" Mulder yelled still not listening to her. "If anything happens to my sister your going to pay!"

Dana knew that it was the truth and took in a ragged breath. "Okay." she agreed. "But now we are going to have to put our differences aside and focus on what's important."

"Well it certainly isn't you." he mumbled.

"Mulder! Please. I'm faxing you a copy of everything I know. Read it and make your move." she paused. "But don't do anything risky or stupid. I know that I haven't been fair, but please don't do anything stupid to get even with me. If you do I don't think I'll ever be able to live with my self."

She heard Skinner's voice in the background and knew what was going on. They were going to go find Samantha. Mulder and Skinner. 'Oh God!' she thought. 'Skinner.' her mother's husband.

She glanced back down at the fax machine. The last page had just fed it's way through. She knew that she had to get back as soon as possible.

"Mulder!?"

"Yeah?" his voice was strained. She knew that he was angry.

"Mulder I'm coming back." she said. "Don't do anything until I get back." she knew that it was wishful thinking, but hope was all she had left. Only hope.

"Not a chance." she heard Mulder say. "Not a chance." and then the line went dead.

Dana pushed end on her phone then quickly dialed the airport. She had to get back.

"Good afternoon, Logan international Airport information desk." the woman on the other line said.

"This is Special Agent Dana Scully with the FBI." she said. "I need to get on the first flight to Washington DC. I don't care what airline, but this is an emergency and I need to get out now."

She heard the woman typing something. "I'm sorry." the woman said. "But do to the blizzard warning all flight's have been grounded. I'm afraid that there won't be another flight to Washington DC for a couple of hours and even then I'm not sure that they'll be able to take off."

Dana let out a cry of frustration. "Thanks." she muttered and hung up.

She grabbed her files off the fax machine and hurried back out to her car. If she had to drive then she had to drive.

"Mulder, we should wait for Scully." Skinner said softly. "I know that your mad and I know that you feel very helpless, but she knows a lot more about your sister's case than you do."

Mulder slammed his fist down on his desk in frustration. "I'm not about to stay here and wait for her to get back while my sister could be in danger."

Skinner sighed. He knew that there was know way to talk Mulder out of searching for his sister. There was only one thing he could think of doing.

"All right." Skinner agreed. "I just know that I might regret this, but I'll go with you." he sighed. "It's the least I can do, Agent Mulder. If I were to let you go with out a partner, I could be liable if you get injured or killed and I don't want that. That is the last thing I want."

Mulder shook his head. "I don't think that would be such a good idea, sir." he stood up. "You have a wife and a family that you love." he shook his head. "I don't really have anyone. My sister is really all that I have left and she's gone......I have to find her and I don't want to have to worry about killing you in the process."

Skinner laughed. "Agent Mulder, I've been in the FBI longer than you've been walking. I'm pretty sure that I can handle myself."

"I used to think that I could handle myself." Mulder whispered. "But I lost my self control when I met the woman I love." he shook his head. "I'd be willing to do anything for her, but she hasn't done anything for me. She's hidden the truth from me and I feel like I've lost the only person I've ever trusted. The only person that I've ever loved more than my life it's self."

"Agent Mulder. Dana Scully loves you. I've been overlooking your relationship because I realized that there would never be anyone for you but her. I highly doubt that your willing to throw a seven year partnership down the drain because she hid something from you."

Mulder shook his head. "She knows that finding my sister means everything to me. I don't understand why she would keep it all from me. I just don't understand it."

"Maybe she wanted to find Samantha to prove how much she loves you." Skinner suggested. "You two have been having problems. I won't deny that I have noticed the tension between you two." he paused. "I believe that Agent Scully is so afraid that you'll run off again that she's trying everything in her power to keep you with her."

Mulder thought for a moment. He remembered the night Scully had told him that his search was not just his, it was now hers. 'Maybe Skinner's right.' he thought. 'Maybe she is trying to prove herself to me.' He shook his head. There was know way he was going to think that the woman he loved felt unworthy of him.

"I have to find my sister." he whispered. "I have to find her." he grabbed his keys off his desk. "Are you coming?" he turned to look at the man who was married to Scully's mother.

Skinner nodded. "All right."

Erin Evan opened the door to Samantha Mulder's cell and slammed it shut. A bright light filled the room forcing Samantha to open her eyes.

"Not much longer." Erin told Samantha. "Pretty soon you will be free and won't remember a thing that happened." she laughed. "You won't even remember your name, which in your case will be very nice. You won't want to remember it once we get through with you."

Samantha squeezed her eyes shut, but the light was blinding. Even with her eyes closed she could still see the light. "Turn off the lights." she moaned. "Please....... I'm so sick of that light."

Erin shook her head and sat down. "So tell me, what do you plan to do with your life once you are free of this......" she motioned around. "This make shift cell." she paused. "You know. We've had some of the best people locked up in these rooms. Feel privileged that you were one of them."

Samantha shook her head and slowly opened her eyes. "I'll never forget your secrets." she mumbled. "You might as well keep me locked up forever because I won't let you get away that easily."

"I sometimes wonder why your father kept you alive this long." Erin stood up and waved her hand to a camera in the corner. As she did so the light's in the room dimmed and eventually went dark.

"Maybe because he still had some feelings left in that piece of muscle and blood they call a body. Even though he may have killed over a hundred men, he couldn't kill me." Samantha smiled feeling grateful that she had been pretty much protected from *them* all of the years she had been missing from the outside world.

There was no way she could ever forgive her biological father for taking her away from her family, but she did feel a little bit of sympathy towards him. She didn't even want to imagine how alone he must have felt all of those years.

"Your father was an idiot." Erin yelled. "I kept telling him that he was going to die of lung cancer and did he listen to me?" she shook her head. "Why would he listen to me. I was there to make sure that he messed up."

Samantha was confused. "What are you talking about?" she asked.

Erin laughed and shook her head. "He's been slipping for a substantial amount of time now." she began to pace back and fourth. "I'll tell you one thing........so listen. One day you may remember what you know now. I suggest that you never tell a single soul about it. *They* will be watching you. *They* will never let you go. Everywhere you go they will be watching. Waiting. Waiting for you to remember and mess up."

"Kill me." Samantha whispered. "Because I refuse to forget. There are people who want answers.....there are people who need answers and I refuse to let them down."

"All right." Erin walked over to the door. "Have it your way."

Dana sat impatiently behind a long line of cars. The traffic was terrible and while she was stuck in it her partner was probably getting himself killed.

Sighing Dana pulled out her phone and dialed hers and Mulder's office number. After for rings there newly recorded answering machine picked up.

"Hello, you have reached the X-Files Division of the FBI. At the moment we are unable to speak with you, but if you would like to speak to another member of the FBI dial 555-0761...." there was a long pause and then a beep.

"Mulder! If your there answer the phone! Please!" she let out a cry of frustration and hung up.

Next she dialed Skinner's number.

"Assistant Director Skinner's office." Jenn, Skinner's receptionist answered.

"Jenn this is Agent Scully. I need to speak with Skinner. It's really important."

"I'm sorry agent Scully.....but Skinner is not here. He and agent Mulder left here some time ago. I was informed to call your mother and tell her that Skinner would not be home for dinner, but that was all the information I have. I know that they did a couple of things before leaving, but they were really secretive and quiet. I was informed to tell no one anything and if anyone asked, to deny everything."

Dana groaned and hung up. She didn't know what to do. She was still a good four hours outside of Washington DC and she knew that by the time the traffic subsided it would be to late to stop them from doing anything.

Greenwall Factory
Exact Location Unknown
5:10 P.M.

Mulder pulled up in front of the Greenwall factory, but stayed out of sight. They had stayed in DC longer than they had wanted, trying to make all of the necessary arrangements and it had taken them forever to get out of DC, and along with the traffic and the fact that the factory wasn't located on any map it had taken for ever.

The factory had been made up to look like a state penitentiary. There were barbed wire fences surrounding the buildings perimeter but there were no guards anywhere in sight which would make it easy to get by.

"I'm surprised we found this place." Skinner mumbled glancing back up at the building. "This place looks like Fort Knox. I wonder what our government actually does here. You'd think that people would question this place."

Mulder didn't reply, he just stared up at the building. "My sister is in there." he whispered. "My sister is behind those fences and walls." tears stung his eyes. He could almost feel his sister arm around him. After all his years of searching his long journey was about to end.

Skinner's eyes wondered over to the younger agent, then back out the window. "It looks like it's going to snow." he said changing the subject. "I hate early snow, it just doesn't seem like winter."

There was a long pause of silence that hung over the two agents as they watched the factory. The only sound evident was the howling of the wind and the quiet sound of their hearts beating against their rib cages.

Mulder closed his eyes. "It's my birthday tomorrow." he said softly, interrupting the silence. He looked back over at Skinner. "For as long as I can remember I've wished for Samantha's return. That's all I've ever wanted for my birthday. Over twenty five wishes.......and never once did they come true." he paused. "Until now."

"I think that your wishes came true along time ago." Skinner said thoughtfully.

"How?"

"Someone was sent to help you......You may not think of Dana Scully as a blessing, but she has kept you out of trouble more times than I can count. Look......" Sinner motioned to the building. "She has gotten you this far......do you think that you'd be here with out her? I don't. I think that you would still be where you were seven years ago......lost and *Spooky*."

Mulder laughed. "I'm still *Spooky*." he joked.

He glanced back at his superior, his expression suddenly becoming more serious. "Scully was a blessing. I can never thank the FBI enough for pairing me with her. I think that I've been to hard on her lately, though. She's been so upset and I haven't made it any easier for her to talk to me. I think......" he paused. "No, I believe, that I shouldn't have come back. She really was better off with out me. There's nothing left in our relationship. Once the trust is gone, there isn't much left to fall back on. Sometimes loving a person just isn't enough."

"Agent Mulder, I suggest that we don't make our move until after dark." Skinner didn't want to listen to what the younger agent was saying. He didn't want to believe that there was so much trouble in his and Scully's relationship. The only thing he could think about doing was changing the subject.

"And if you want a knew partner, I'll be glad to speak on your behalf for a transfer."

"I don't want another partner." Mulder growled. "I want Scully and I to have what we used to have. I want thing's to be how they used to be I want things the way they were before we fucked up and crossed the damn line. I know that I've said this a million times, but it's all I want."

"I thought you just said that your sister was all that you've ever wanted."

Mulder looked down at his hands and as he did so a sudden reality hit him. There was no ring on his ring finger. He never imagined himself getting married, but now things were different.

"I....um...." he didn't know what to say. "I'm going to be thirty-nine tomorrow. I think that I'd like to settle down and have a family. Maybe Scully was right when she told me that it was time to stop searching for my sister. I mean Samantha is here." he motioned to the building. "And I suddenly realized that even though I want my sister, she's not all that I've been searching for."

Skinner smiled. "What else have you been searching for?" he asked.

"I think I've been searching for a reason to stop searching. I think that Dana was that reason." he glanced out at the darkening sky. "Over the years she has eventually filled up that space that's been missing in my heart. I don't know what it was, if it was her strength or her courage, but something made me fall in love with her. And something made me fight those feelings. That's all I've been doing since the moment I first laid eyes on her."

Mulder knew that he shouldn't have poured heart out to his superior but he had to tell someone his newly found revelation. He preferred it to be Scully but he didn't know if he'd ever be able to tell her.. Now there was every reason for Skinner to split them up. They were way against bureau policy and Skinner had already admitted that he had been overlooking their relationship for sometime.

"I guess we deserve to be separated."

Skinner chuckled. "I don't think that I'd go that far."

Mulder looked at the older man, the shock evident on his face. "Sir?" he questioned. "We have gone against bureau policy."

"Agent Mulder, I am willing to over look your relationship if you promise to talk to that partner of yours."

Mulder nodded and relaxed in his seat. "All right." he agreed then motioned to the factory. "Now what do we do? Sit and wait until they start what ever they're going to do, or do we make our move now?"

"I think that we should wait to make our move." Skinner replied. "That way we can call for back up when we need it. We don't want to make a wrong move."

Samantha sat up. He was close. She could feel his presence. The same kind of presence she remembered feeling when she was a little girl. She could always remember feeling this way when he was hiding in a closet or standing at her doorway, ready to jump out and scare her. She had always played along, acting as if she hadn't known he was there. But in all realities she had always known.

"Fox." she whispered.

She wasn't sure if it was just wishful thinking or a real sense of his presence. She knew that it could have been her fear trying to comfort her the best it could. IF it was the fear of her fate or the fear of what they were going to do to her, she did not know.

"Stop it, Samantha." she chided herself. "Your just feeling things." she stood up and began to pace back and fourth.

If only she knew what they had planned for her, maybe she could think of a way out. Her thought's darted back to her dreams of her brother and the woman that always presided next to her brother.

She had realized that her dreams were some kind of sign. A sign that everything would either turn out all right or that everything would mess up and turn out terrible. She wasn't sure of which, but she was sure of one thing. One thing always remained the same. The red headed woman was always the last standing. She was always the one left in the end, and if that woman truly existed then she was the one who would decide everyone's fate.

The group of men sat around quietly, waiting to hear on the progress of there test.

"When did they say the test would be done?" a slightly over weight man, with a scratchy voice asked. "I want to hear about the progress of the implant."

A man occupying a high-backed leather chair turned around to face his partner. "The test subject isn't scheduled to be moved until 9:00 P.M. and the implantation test isn't supposed to be done until 10:00 P.M.. Be calm. We will hear about the implants success once it is done."

Another man standing by the window turned around, taking a puff of his recently lit cigar. "Will they guarantee success or will we have a failure like last time?" he pulled off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"We can't afford another failure." the slightly over weight man said in agreement with the third man.

The man in the chair shrugged and turned back around to face another man whom he had been speaking with before. "Has all the evidence been destroyed?" he asked. "There mustn't be a scrap of evidence left for anyone to find."

The other man shook his head and stood up. "I'll see to it." he bowed slightly then left the room.

"Good." the man in the high backed chair said then turned back to the rest of the men. "All of the evidence will be destroyed shortly. And once everything has been destroyed we will be able to go on with the tests."

"Jenn!" Agent Condors screamed rushing into Skinner office. "Well the hell is Skinner? We have warehouses and factories going up into flames all of the city."

Jenn didn't know what to do. She was trying to handle everyone's questions and problems but she couldn't. There were too many phone calls coming in from all over the city.

"I don't know." she replied. "What the hell is going on. First Skinner runs out with Agent Mulder with out giving me a reason why and now the phones are ringing off the hooks and I can't take it."

Condors sighed. "I have no idea. The first call came in about twenty minutes ago. Someone said that they heard a loud explosion or a bunch of explosions and we have close to twenty, four alarm, arson fires. They keep going up. One about every minute or so."

Jenn picked up the phone. "I'll try to reach Skinner on his cellular." she punched in his number and waited. The animated response came on and she hung up. "His cellular is either out of range or it's off."

"Call agent Scully." Condors suggested. "I'll bet she knows where her partner and Skinner are."

Jenn nodded and dialed Dana's number.

"Agent Scully this is Jenn from Assistant Director Skinners office. We're having a really big problem here and we can not reach Skinner. I was asked to ask you if you knew where he and Agent Mulder could be found."

"What's going on?" she asked.

Jenn took a deep breath. "Warehouses and other locations are going up into flames all around the city. It's out of control. No one has any idea of what's going on and almost every official in the city is out at these locations."

Dana groaned. "Jenn, I have no idea where they are. I've been trying to reach them for the better part of the day. Keep trying and call me if you do."

Jenn agreed then hung up.

Dana pounded on her steering wheel in frustration. There wasn't much time left and she was still a good thirty minutes away. The traffic was terrible, cars were backed for miles.

"Damn!" She couldn't take it anymore. She pulled onto the shoulder and sped down the road. She saw flashing lights through her rear view mirror but paid no attention. She had to get to the Factory. Something was really wrong or something was going to go really wrong. She had and uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"Pull over please." she heard a cop say through an intercom.

Deciding that she better, she stopped and turned off her ignition.

"May I see your license and registration." the officer said stepping up to her window.

"Listen, Officer." Dana said handing him her badge and identification card. "I'm Special Agent Dana Scully with the FBI. My partner and the Assistant Direct Walter Skinner are in very big danger. I need to get to the Greenwall Factory. This is a matter of life or death. You have to let me go."

The officer didn't seem to believe her. "I'm going to have to ask you to step out of your vehicle Agent Scully." his hand went down to the door handle, but Dana locked it before he could open it.

Dana shook her head. "You don't seem to understand. If my partner and the A.D. die YOU are going to be in a lot of trouble for not letting me go. Please......I need to go."

"I'm sorry but I can't let you do that." the officer stood his ground and did not move.

"Listen!" she was angry. "I need to go! If you don't move I'll run over you and all of these people. So get the fuck out of my way!"

The officer sighed. "Where did you say you were headed?" he asked.

"Listen I need to go." she grabbed her badge and ID back from the man and started her car. She didn't care if she was going to get in trouble later, at the moment all that mattered was her partner and her superior.

Before the officer could say another word she drove off leaving nothing but dust behind her.

Samantha jumped as the door swung open. Four people, three men and one woman, stood in her doorway.

"It's time." one of the men said reaching forward to pull her up. "Do you want to do this the easy way or the hard way." his words were almost like acid.

Samantha tried to answer but no sound came out. The man was squeezing her arm too tightly. "Stop!" she cried. "Please, your hurting me!" tears came to her eyes.

The woman in the door way stepped forward. "Let her go!" she cried.

The man released Samantha and she fell to the floor.

"Wh....what are you going to do to me?" she asked hoarsely. She had been trying to hide her fear, she had tried to act tough, but now there was nothing left but fear. She still felt the presence of her brother, but it didn't do any good. Although his feeling of nearness eased her heart slightly, she still feared her fate.

Standing up, Samantha decided that she better obey their wish. She didn't want anymore trouble. 'Go.' she urged her self. 'Go and let them have what they want. There's nothing left.'

"Thinking?" the woman asked. She laughed. "I don't know what you could be thinking about. When we get finished with you there wont be a though left in that pretty little head of yours."

Samantha winced as two men grabbed her again. "I won't forget." she cried. "I'll never forget."

The woman shook her head and turned to the remaining man. "Get everything prepared for her transfer. There isn't time to waste. We must be exactly on schedule."

Mulder leaned back and rubbed his eyes. "I think I should call Scully to see where she is?" he pulled out his cellular and groaned. "Damn, I turned it off, what if she was trying to reach me before."

Skinner shrugged. "Well you better call her. I'm sure she's tried calling you." he yawned. "I sure hope Margaret doesn't worry. You know how those Scully women are, always worrying over the littlest things. I'm surprised that they don't develop ulcers from the stress."

Mulder shook his head. "They have every reason in the world to worry. Man, look what they've gone through." he couldn't count the number of things that they had to worry about. "I mean after what happened with Melissa and what happened to Dana. Then there was my fake death and all that stuff with the Cancer Man and his evil friends...... they really have every reason to worry."

Skinner nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I'll bet Scully is worried about you right now. Better call her."

Mulder quickly dialed Dana's number and waited for her answer.

"Scully." Dana said answering.

"It's me Scully." Mulder said softly. He didn't want to worry her.

He heard her take in a deep breath.

"Dana?" Mulder cried. "Scully? Are you there? What's wrong?" Fear clenched at his heart.

"Yeah I'm here Mulder." she replied. "Please tell me that your not going to do anything stupid or dangerous. I've already been pulled over once for driving on the shoulder of the road and I'm not about to get pulled over again for trying to rush over there to save your butt. I'm likely to have my driver license revoked and have my job suspended for reckless endangerment."

Mulder laughed softly. "I doubt Skinner will let that happen Scully. I've had a nice talk with him and there's something that I have to tell you."

"What?" Dana asked curiously. "You might as well tell me. We don't know what's going to happen tonight. This could be our last conversation. I could get killed or yo....." her voice trailed off. She didn't want to think about it.

"How far away are you?" he asked. He prayed that she wasn't to far away. He knew how terrible the traffic was and he could picture Scully's frustration. He wanted to tell her how much he loved her over the phone, but decided against it. Now wasn't the time or place to talk.

"Mulder, I'm about ten minutes away from the factory. Wait until I get there before you make any kind of move." she paused. "By the way something strange has been going on. Tell Skinner that headquarters has been trying to reach him. There have been a number of arsons all over the city. Every law enforcement official in the city has been called to these fires. It's really out of hand."

Mulder groaned. "All right Scully. Do they know what's causing all of the fires?"

"No. Some of the whiteness stated that they heard a series of explosions, one about every minute for a twenty-five minute period. No one seems to understand what happened. It looks like something big is going down."

"Scully, I wanted to ask you if yo......." his voice trailed off.

"Mulder!" Dana cried. "Mulder!"

Mulder wasn't paying any attention his eyes were focused on the factory. A bright light was coming form the top of the building. It seemed to be lighting up the sky with it's light.

"Skinner." Mulder cried. "There coming out. The doors are opening."

Skinner nodded and jumped out of the car. "Mulder is that......" he pointed to a door opening from the front of the factory.

They could just make out the outlines of five people. It looked as though two were holding up another.

Mulder dropped his phone and jumped out of the car. His breath caught in his throat as he caught sight of a woman. She had long brownish hair and was about five foot eight or five foot nine.

"Mulder!" Dana screamed. "Mulder! God damn it answer me."

There was no reply only the sound of screaming.

********************
8:59 P.M.

Mulder drew his gun. They hadn't seen him and Skinner yet, but things would change soon. He made sure that they remained hidden in the shadows. One bad move could get his sister killed and he couldn't risk it.

He motioned for Skinner to move around the other side. He wasn't sure when the gates had opened but they now stood gaping wide, waiting for them to enter and the others to exit.

The light at the top of the factory had died down, but enough remained so that Mulder could see that the woman in between two men was his sister or what looked like his sister.

He had to make his move. Even though he hated betraying his partner, he had to save his sister. "Let her go!" Mulder screamed stepping out of the shadows. "Let my sister go." he turned to looked at his X-Partner.

"Well, I'd ask how you were bought into all of this Agent Evan but I don't think you were ever one of us. You were so stupid and careless. That bracelet......my partner found it."

Samantha looked up and gasped. She had been right. Her brother, Fox, had been there the whole time. Their connection hadn't died. As a matter of fact it was stronger than ever, than it had ever been.

"Fox....?" Samantha whispered. The man holding her arm lightened up and she knew what he was doing, he was going for his gun. She wanted to scream out, to warn her brother, but she couldn't.

Mulder saw it too and before the man could grab his gun Mulder fired. The shot his the man square in the chest. The other man went for his gun as well, but Mulder managed to get him before he shot.

Erin screamed and pulled her own gun out. "Freeze Agent Mulder!" she grabbed Samantha. "One stupid move and your sister is history."

The remaining man stood frozen in terror. He wasn't about to move for fear that he too would lose his life. He tried to look at the two women next to him but he was frozen.

Mulder laughed. "Would you really kill your only test subject?" he asked. "I don't that your *friends* would be to happy about that. They just might have you killed. You wouldn't be the first that they killed." a sudden wave of anger washed over him. "*They* killed my father! And he was one of them. They hurt my partner and they killed me too so what would stop them from killing you. They don't take well to change. They never take well to change."

Out of the corner of his eyes he could see Skinner moving closer.

Something Mulder did must have made Erin suspect that Skinner was there. With out any warning she turned and fired twice. A look of pure surprise washed over his face as he staggered backwards.

Mulder watched in horror as Skinner fell to the ground. Two large dark stains seeped through his white shirt, coloring it a sickening shade of red. He could hear his sister hysterical crying and he wished he could comfort her. He could also feel Erin's gun trained on him.

Mulder suddenly realized the mistake he had made. He should have waited for Scully, he should have called for backup. And suddenly the truth wasn't all that mattered. Telling Dana Katherine Scully how he felt suddenly was all that he wanted to do.

Dana pulled up into a vacant parking space in the back of the factory. She didn't know what to expect or what she might see. The fear of the unknown was just too much, she fumbled numbly with her gun.

Taking a deep breath, she walked around the building's side and paused near a brick wall. She could hear voices off in the distance. They were not very loud but she could just make out what they were saying.

"Do you think killing me is going to do you any good?" It was Mulder. Dana could now see him. He was facing a Erin Evan, his gun drawn, pointed straight at her. Evan had her gun drawn as well, it was aimed at a woman next to her.

"My partner knows the truth.......she has told others. You can't kill all of us, there is just know way." Mulder screamed.

Dana could just make out three figures sprawled on the ground. Two she did not recognize, but the other, the other was Skinner. He heart did a flip-flop as she noticed his shirt soaked with blood. His gun rested on the ground next to him.

"Well, then I guess that I'll have to kill everyone who knows." Erin was saying, drawing Dana's attention back to her. "Your partner won't be to hard. Once your gone, she'll probably give up and die with you."

"She won't give up." Mulder screamed. "Scully, is not a quitter. I trust her enough to know that she won't let the truth die along with me."

Dana winced and stepped forward. She made her way behind a wall of rotting crates and boxes. A sickening stench filled her nostrils as she passed what looked to be a decaying dog corpse.

"This is not happening." she told herself. "I am not about to sneak up on two armed people and get my head blown off."

She rounded the corner and stopped. She was trapped behind a wall of old pipes and crates. There was a small opening just large enough for her to squeeze through. She could still hear their voices, but a new person was speaking.

"Let my brother go." Samantha cried. "Please.....Fox deserves a chance. Killing me may solve some of your problems, but killing him...." she shook her head. "Killing him will only create more."

"How would you know." Erin snarled. "Killing him will create one less problem for me and one less for *us*."

"Yeah, but they'll know who did it." Samantha whispered. "Don't you think that the people my brother works for will know who killed him and that man." she motioned her head to Skinner. "Don't you think that they will know?"

Erin laughed and pointed her gun at Mulder. "Which one of you Mulder's wants to die first?" she asked. "Why not Fox? Do you want to give you sister a couple more minutes of life."

Mulder glanced at his sister. He had waited so long to see her again, he had searched for so long. He wasn't about to let everything he'd worked so hard for die. he thought hopefully.

So he decided. "Maybe you shouldn't kill us." he whispered. "I mean, my partner will still tell everyone everything. She has the disk."

Dana crept closer, her eyes focused on Mulder. She was almost directly behind him when she tripped over an iron railing. There was a loud ring and huge crash. Tons of crates fell to the ground with a terrible thud. She crept further into the shadows, but she knew that she had already given herself away. She had failed.

Mulder whirled around trying to see the source of the noise. He could just see the faintest hint of red in the shadows. 'Scully!' his mind screamed. He was just about to run towards her when he heard silent click. He had forgotten about Erin, he had forgotten that she had a gun trained on him.

He felt a sudden rush of pressure and then a numb feeling throughout his back. He tried escape, but another bullet hit him. His hand fled forward just as another shot hit him in the leg.

He fell to the ground. He could not breath. His lungs felt like iron. His breaths came out in short, painful gasps. Darkness was beginning to swirl around him and as it did so he realized that there was so much he wanted to live for. He wanted to live for Dana Catherine Scully. He wanted to die with Dana Catherine Scully. Her wanted to marry her, to be with her, to love her, to have her love him.

Tears welled up in his eyes as he thought of her loneliness. His pain was hers and hers was his. Now nothing mattered but his will to live. His tattered will was almost gone, he had almost given up too many times and there was so little he could do to hang on to it.

He struggled to fight the darkness, but it was so overcoming. He watched as Dana stood in place, frozen in terror. This was it. There wasn't anything else he could do. Hands covered with his own blood, he reached out through the thick haze and opened his hand to her.

"I love you." he whispered, but she had not heard him. His eyes were forced closed by a sudden urge to sleep and unconsciousness took over.

Dana stood frozen in terror. She had watched him fall to the ground, broken and bloody. She wanted to run to him, to hold him, but she couldn't. She had killed him with her carelessness.

"Mulder." she whispered. She felt her knees begin to buckle, but steadied herself. This was no time to collapse. She had to save Samantha.

Gathering up all of the strength she possessed, she stepped forward, her gun drawn and aimed at Erin Evan. "Drop it, Erin!" She screamed.

The man standing next to Samantha tried to pull his gun out, but Dana was quicker. She fired. The man fell to the ground, his eyes wide with shock.

"Let Samantha go!" Dana screamed again. "Or I'll kill you. I'll kill you!"

Samantha focused on the woman before her. It was the woman from her dreams. She remembered the woman's blue eyes, mainly. They were so clear, so full of pain, but no fear. They were never filled with fear. They were always so deep and readable.

Erin laughed. "Never!"

"Let her go." She repeated. "I'll kill you and every one of those sons-of-bitches you work with. Believe me I will. Nothing can stop me." she paused glancing over at Mulder's broken body. "Not even death. Death is the least of my worries. So, Mulder dies. All right. So I die.....who cares." she paused. "There will always be another to tell your secrets. Always."

"All right." Erin agreed and let go of Samantha. "You win agent Scully, take her. I guess that your a lot smarter than me."

Dana knew that Erin had something up he sleeve. As soon as Samantha was out of Erin's grasp, she saw what it was.

"Samantha!" She screamed dodging for the taller woman. "Down!" she grabbed her arm, but it was too late.

Erin fired, the bullet hit Samantha in the head. Blood began to seep down her face and to a small puddle on the ground.

Anger rushed through Dana as she saw what had happened. With out thinking, she fired four rounds of bullets at Erin. All hit her in the chest.

Erin flew backwards in shock. She clutched at her chest. "They wi...." she gasped. "Th.....ey wi.....ll wi....win." her eyes rolled back in her head.

Dana stood up and walked over to Erin. "Here." she whispered and dropped the younger woman's small gold ID bracelet next to her. "This is yours and I want nothing to do with it."

JFK Memorial Hospital
11:21 P.M.

The whole day had gone by in a blur. Dana had spent most of the day with Mulder, but had spent an hour or two between Samantha and Skinner. The doctors had told her that Mulder's chance of survival was slim, but there was always room for hope.

'Hope.' she thought. 'What is hope?' she didn't want him to suffer. She didn't want for him to live the rest of his life on a respirator or in the hospital. If he was going to die she wanted him to go peacefully and without any pain.

Tears stung her eyes as she clutched Mulder's hand. She had always loved his hands. They had always been so strong and comforting and now they were weak and limp. There was no warmth left in his grasp, hell there wasn't even a grasp. His hands were now cold and lifeless.

Dana could remember the first time he had held her hand it was just as if it were yesterday. They had been on their very first case, running through the woods and he had reached out to help her. She had loved the feeling of his hands, then. The way they brought comfort to her.

"Mulder." she whispered. "Please, wake up. There is no way that I can make it with out you. I know that you didn't want me to give up, but there is so little to live for with out you here beside me. Please hear me."

Somewhere
Same Time

Mulder opened his eyes to find his father and Melissa Scully studying him closely. He felt lifeless and peaceful.

"Where am I?" he asked.

His father stepped forward. "You can not give up." he whispered. "You have to go back and continue your quest for the truth. Finding your sister is not the end of it. They will try to get her back and they will succeed without your being there."

Mulder closed his eyes then opened them. "I can't go back there." he whispered. "I found what I was looking for. There is nothing left to be found."

Bill shook his head and took his sons hand. "That is where you are wrong, Fox. You have only just begun to find the answers you've been looking for. Please don't let the truth die here. You must continue to search for the answers."

"But why? There's so much pain. I can't go back to all of that pain." he glanced at Melissa who was remaining quiet. "Dad, I can't go back. There isn't enough of me left to continue."

"Fox!" Melissa cried, finally breaking her silence. "You must go back to my sister. You have to press on ward. Fight the pain, you have too. For Dana, please. She's going to need you in the very near future. Her life depends on you."

"Dana can do it with out me." he whispered. "She is strong."

Melissa shook her head. "Without you she will give up. My sister may be a fighter, she may be strong, but she is a quitter when it comes to loss. She may not have quit last time she thought you were dead, but that was because there was still a part of your relationship living in her. Now......" she paused. "Now there is nothing and she will quit. She'll give up on everything. She'll give up on the battle that she will fight......she'll give in."

Bill Mulder sighed. "You see, we have both been sent here to tell you, to warn you and to guide you and Dana. Our time is limited....Melissa has already gone past her limits to try and save the two of you and now my time is strained. Go back, Fox. Don't let a little pain stop you from being truly happy."

Mulder considered it a minute, but wasn't sure he was ready to go back. "I don't know." he replied. "Can't I stay......?"

Melissa reached out and touched his cheek softly. "No." she whispered. "If you don't live for yourself, at least do it for my sister and your sister and everyone else who wants to know the truth. Death isn't a choice at the moment, but if should decide on it, you will not truly rest. You will carry around the burden of letting everyone down and when Dana dies you will never be reunited with her. She will go on to a better place and you will be stuck here, to wander this vast darkness."

"Do you want them to get away with what they've been doing?" Bill asked. "If you die they will and no one will ever continue the search. The truth will die and it will get buried deeper and deeper behind the walls of the Pentagon. The truth will be stored in warehouses and closets torched by those men I once called my friends and my partners. Do you really want that? Do you really want them to win.....do you?"

Mulder shook his head. "Never." he whispered. "I won't give up. I have to much to live for. You were right. My search for the truth has only begun. It hasn't ended or ceased. It won't until I bring those men to justice and expose all of their little secrets to the world. I will."

Melissa smiled and turned to bill. "I have to go." she whispered and quickly disappeared into the darkness.

Bill took one last look at his son. "One day." he whispered and disappeared.

Mulder laid back down and braced himself for the jolt of life that would soon shoot through him. "I won't give up." he whispered and soon found himself disappearing form the darkness and into life.

11:25 P.M.

Dana leaned back in her chair just as her mother walked in. She wasn't in the mood to see her mother, she hadn't spoken to her since she had run out on her the night before.

"How is he?" she asked softly.

Dana shrugged. "The same I guess. I haven't left his side for more than twenty minutes. I just wish that he'd open his eyes and look at me. I just want to tell him how I really feel. I want him to love me and I wan to love him."

Margaret sighed and sat down next to her daughter. "What ever happens." she whispered. "I just want you to know that you won't be alone. I'll always been here if you want to talk. Don't shut me out like you did before. Two years is too long with out speaking."

"I promise." she sobbed and through herself into her mothers arms. "I just don't want him to die. It's so hard to be with out him."

"Dana, he'll be all right. You'll see."

"If he dies I don't think that I can go on and search. There is so much that I did to push him away and I can't let it go. I just don't forgive myself for not telling him how much I really loved him."

"He will live."

11:28 P.M.

Mulder could feel the pain beginning to surge through his body. It was almost overwhelming. As he struggled to swim through the dark haze that hung over him, one image rested in his mind. It was the image of Scully holding him up in a dense blackness. She had her gun drawn with one hand and the other was supporting him.

Slowly, he opened his eyes. A blinding light shot through his vision and eventually the rooms object began to come into focus. He could just make out the out line of the ceiling tile. Turning his head slowly, he focused on his partner.

She was so beautiful resting in her mother's arms. He didn't want to disturb her, but he had to touch her. Moving his hand outwards he brushed it against her elbow that rested on his bed beside him.

In chance our hope is made by love.

11:28 P.M.

She was so beautiful resting in her mother's arms. He didn't want to disturb her, but he had to touch her. Moving his hand outwards he brushed it against her elbow that rested on his bed beside him.

Dana moved away from her mother and turned to look at Mulder. His eyes were open and so full of life.

"Mulder." she whispered.

He tried to smile, but the respirator down his through kind of made that impossible. He motioned to it and Dana jumped up.

"Hang on!" she cried and ran out of the room. A few moments later she returned with a group of doctors.

"Well, Agent Mulder." one of them cried. "I'm glad that you decided to join us in the land of the living. We didn't think you would make it." he reached for the respirator. "Let's see if you can breath with out this thing."

After the respirator had been extracted, he turned to Scully and held out his hand. "I have a message for you." he whispered.

Dana smiled and took his hand gratefully. "What?" she asked.

"Our search has only just begun."

She nodded. "I know." she whispered "How are you feeling."

"Like I've been shot." he replied and glanced back at the doctor. "Will I live?" he asked.

The doctor sighed and looked down at his charts. "You should have died last night." he admitted. "But you made it this far, there's a pretty good chance that you'll make it all the way."

Margaret smiled and took her daughters hand. "See what faith does?" she asked softly.

Dana nodded. "Can Mulder and I bee alone for a few minutes?" she asked. "I really need to talk to him. It's very important and it can't wait."

Her mother nodded and followed the doctor out of the room.

Dana turned back to Mulder and sat down next to him. "If you ever scare me like that again I'll shoot you myself." tears welled up in the corners of her eyes. "Promise me that you won't let this happen again."

Mulder reached up and wiped the tears from her eyes. "I promise." he whispered. "Did my sister and Skinner make it?"

"Yes." she replied. "Your sister is going to be just fine and Skinner will live, he's been shot in the stomach before." she grinned. "I if I remember right you've been shot as well."

"And how about Erin?" he asked. "What happened to her?"

"I shot her." Dana admitted. "I put four round in her chest. She didn't suffer much. Although I kind of wish she had for all she's done to us."

"When I saw you ducking behind those boxes after I was shot." Mulder began. "I realized that I had to live for you. I never had much to live for before I met you and now, now your my breath. Your what I need to live. Nothing could ever take that away, not even death."

Dana smiled and gently reached down to kiss him. "I love you ." she murmured against his lips. "I just never realized how much I needed you until it was almost to late. Everything died when I thought you had been killed. There was suddenly nothing to live for."

Mulder's hand went up to rest on the back of her neck. "Partners?" he asked, bringing her closer to his body.

"Yes....partners." she replied and pulled away. "I don't want to hurt you. There will be plenty of time for everything after you heal. Right now I just want you to concentrate on getting better."

"Anything for you Dana." he whispered and closed his eyes. "Don't go. Stay with me while I sleep."

"Here...." she gently climbed on to the bed and curled up next to him. "How's this?" she asked.

"Great. This is the way it should always be."

"It will." she assured him and drifted off to sleep.

"Will she live." a man in his thirties asked the doctor standing over a young woman's body.

The doctor nodded. "Yes, but it was a close shave. The bullets closed off her air passage, but she should recover."

The man nodded and gently took the woman's hand. "Here you go my dear." he whispered and pulled out a small gold ID bracelet. With out hesitation he placed the bracelet on her wrist. "It's nice to have you with us." he said then left the room.

The woman in the bed opened her eyes and glanced towards the door way just in time to see her the man she once loved leave the room.

"Alex." she whispered, but it was too late. He was gone.
