Maybe Tomorrow, the Series. . . II
There is No Tomorrow

Disclaimer: I really hate typing these things out. Anyway, the character's Fox Mulder, Walter Skinner and Dana Scully are the property of Chris Carter, Fox, and 1013 productions. No copyright infringement is intended.

Note: Forgive me my 'shippers but I have sinned. I have engaged Scully to another man, but I don't regret it. For the purpose of this story I had too, but it is a MSR in the sense of their thoughts. There is some UST and if I continue with this series is will end in an MSR!!!!!! Yeah, well here I go.

Note: As you can tell I have an obsession with the year 2000. Spooky, huh?

Summery: It is the year 2000, a couple of months after the last one. This is a sequel to "Maybe Tomorrow". Mulder is back in DC facing yet another shut down and Scully is back in Memphis facing the hardest decision of her life.

"You wanted to see me sir?" Mulder asked stepping into AD Skinner's office.

Skinner nodded and motioned for him to sit down. "It has come to my attention that you have stepped out of your authority once again, Agent Mulder."

Mulder smiled. "Did I sir? I must have done it subconsciously because I don't remem......" his voice trailed off as he saw what Skinner had in his hands. "Sir.......what is that?"

Skinner sighed and stood up. "I'm sorry agent Mulder, but the division is to be shut down. This was not my choice and I cannot argue it. You answer to me when you are trouble and I answer to a higher power." he glanced down at his hands. "You are being transferred to Memphis."

Mulder shook his head. "Sir, I can't go there."

"Agent Mulder, I realize that you x-partner is there, but I did not make this choice. You were sent to where they needed you most and that was Memphis."

"Sir, you don't understand I can't go back to Scully. I can't!"

Skinner held up his hand. "Would you like to tell me what happened. This is off the record."

Mulder sighed. "We had just finished this case and I guess I was under a lot of stress. We had a fight and I hit her." he shook his head. "I hit her twice.......but I never meant to. I could never hit her. I cared about her, I didn't......I couldn't."

Skinner nodded. "I had suspected that something like that happened, but I never questioned it. If I had you could have lost your job and been sent to prison."

Mulder nodded, "Thank you sir. I always suspected that you knew. I was so ashamed and I know she's still scared of me."

"Agent Mulder, I suggest that you talk with her......there are some things left better unsaid and undone and yet there are some things better said and done. Talking to her is all that I can suggest for you to do. You two need to talk." he paused. "Last I heard she needed a partner. You'll probably be paired with her because of you already formed partnership."

"All right." she stood up. "Does she know I'm coming?"

"No, well actually I'm not sure. Maybe. I suggest that you do what I say and try to keep yours and Agent Scully's relationship strictly professional. I realize that you were friends, but at the moment I don't even suggest that."

"I will sir." Mulder whispered and stood up. "Thank you sir."

Scully stared down at the line on the page in front of her.

Could she do it? Her heart began to race as she picked up the pen. Did she really want to leave the bureau? 'I want a family.' she thought. 'I want to get married and I don't want to risk losing the only chance I have at it.' she quickly signed her name and as she did so tears sprung to her eyes.

It was complete. She would leave the bureau in two weeks to start her knew life. Her knew life with Parker. A man who she had gradually learned to love. She knew that she would never truly love him, not the way she had loved Mulder, but she was happy.

"Dana you ready to go?" Agent Parker Ramis asked sticking his head into the office.

Scully looked up and nodded. "Yeah, I just need to drop these by the AD's office." she stuffed the forms back in the envelope and quickly sealed it up. "They were trying to stick me with another partner this morning so I decided that it was time to turn in the forms."

Parker shook his head. "You know, Dana you don't have to quit. You can keep on with the bureau. I feel bad having you quit. I know how much you love your work."

"I don't love my work anymore." she said mater-of-faculty. "I haven't for a while." she grabbed her purse. "Let's go."

They were just about to walk out of the building when AD George Anderson stepped out of his office. "Agent Scully I have to speak to you a moment."

"Uh--, sure." she glanced at Parker. "I'll meet you at Junes in half an hour."

"Sure." Parker pulled out his keys and left.

"Agent Scully......this way:" Anderson led her into his office and motioned for her to sit down.

Another man was standing next to the window with his back turned to her. "Here." she handed the AD her resignation forms. "I'm going to resign."

She watched the man at the window flinch and slowly turn around. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw the mans face. "Mulder?"

The man smiled and extended his hand. "It's nice to be working with you again, Agent Scully?"

Scully shook her head and turned back to Anderson. "Excuse me sir, but I am not going to be with the bureau.......I don't understand."

"Agent Scully. I understand your desire to leave, but until the paper work is put through the system you are to work with agent Mulder." he handed her a file. "This case needs immediate attention and you to are to leave on the 5:13 P.M. flight to Roswell New Mexico."

"Sir? I......"

Anderson held up his hand. "Agent Scully, take Agent Mulder to your office and get him settle in."

Scully glanced at Mulder, then took the file and started out of the office. Once they were in the hall Mulder grabbed her arm. "This wasn't my choice, Scully."

She shrugged. "I don't care Mulder. We won't have to work together very long." she pushed open a door and let him in. "You can have Boggs old desk." she pointed to a desk in the far corner.

"Um.....I'll pick you up at 3:00 to go to the airport." Mulder suggested. "That way you can go home and get your stuff."
Scully shook her head. "No, that's all right. Parker will drop me off. I'll meet you there."

"Parker?" Mulder asked.

"Yeah, he's my fiancé. As a matter of fact I have to meet him for lunch." she glanced at her watch.

Mulder couldn't say a word. The shock he had just gotten was too much. Scully, getting married? The thought was unthinkable.

"I'll see you later." she was about to leave, but the look in his eyes stopped her. She couldn't help but feel sorry for him. The one thing he loved most in the world had obviously been shut down. "Do you want to come?"

"I don't know. Am I welcome?"

Scully nodded. "Your my partner. Partners are always welcome." she held out her hand. "Come on, you can tell me why you got transferred here on the way."

Mulder grinned and followed her out of the office. "They decided that I stepped out of jurisdiction one to many times and we got shut down. There's not to much else to tell."

"What'd you do?"

"I don't know. Skinner didn't tell me." he paused out side of her car. "So how about you. Why are you leaving the bureau?"

"Parker and I want a family." she replied with out offering any other information.

Mulder didn't say anything, instead he took her hand. "Your quitting because he want's you too?"

Scully shook her head. "This was my choice, not his. I can't keep putting myself at risk. I want children and a life. The FBI can't offer that to me, but Parker can. He loves me and we're good together."

Mulder thought a moment. She hadn't said that she loved this man named Parker, she had simply said that he loved her. From what he could tell she didn't look like a woman about to be married. She was supposed to be happy, but he couldn't help but notice the sadness in her eyes.

"Do you love him?" he asked.

"Yes, I wouldn't be marring him if I didn't." she turned on the car. "If I have to work with you we have to get one thing straight."

"What?"

"You stay out of my personal life and I'll stay out of yours." she pulled onto the street. "Is that clear agent Mulder?"

Mulder nodded. "We should probably talk, Scully. You and I can't keep doing this to each other."

Scully sighed and pulled out her cell phone and handed it to Mulder. "Dial 555-0567 and give it to me."

Mulder did as he was told and handed it back to her. "Parker." Scully said softly. "I have to go out of town on a case-----Yes I was partnered up with someone.------Who?" she glanced over at Mulder. "Agent Fox Mulder." she smiled. "Yes, I know he's my old partner.----Parker!"

Mulder couldn't help but notice the dark shade of red creep up in his partners cheeks. Turning away he focused his attention on the surroundings. He heard bits and pieces of Scully's conversation, but tried not to listen. He had promised her after all.

"Mulder....." Scully said snapping him out of his reverie. "Mulder come on."

"Where are we?" he asked.

"My apartment. You said you wanted to talk and I figured we'd do it why I packed." she got out and made her way up to the building. "Just don't get any ideas."

Mulder laughed. "Scully, you insult me."

Scully opened her apartment door and quickly rushed in. They were greeted by a small, black dog. "Hey, Of....." she was about to say the dogs name when she remembered Mulder standing behind her. "Hi doggy." she mumbled and pushed him away.

Mulder bent down and patted the dogs head. "Hi......." he flipped over the dog tag and laughed. "Scully? You named your dog after me?" he shook his head. "He's cute, but I see no resemblance."

"Mulder, you wanted to talk so do it." she sat down on the couch. "Come here Foxxy." she patted the seat next to her and the dog was quickly at her side, barking happily.

"I wanted to apologize for what happened. I know it happened along time ago, but it should never have happened. I should never have hit you the way I did." he sat down across form her. "I need your forgiveness, everyday of my life I see myself slapping you and I can't live with it." he reached out to her.

"You hurt me." she whispered. "I know that you didn't mean to do it, but our trust was broken right when your hand made contact with my cheek." her hand went up to the spot. "I got over that, but I don't think I can ever get over your walking out on me in Valentine Nebraska, that was it."

Mulder nodded. "I know, but the truth is that I can't work with out you Scully. You can't leave the bureau. The only reason I was able to work with out you before was because I had the X-Files to keep me going. Now I don't have anything. You were the only partner I could ever trust and being paired with you again is a dream come true."

Scully smiled. "I'm sorry, Mulder. I can't." she stood up. "You're on your own after this case. I'll always be here is you need a friend, but I'm not going to stay with the bureau. I can't do it. We've tried to make our partnership work before and it didn't. We can't continue being Miss *Spooky* I have a reputation to keep."

She knew her words were harsh but they were the truth. She didn't want Mulder bringing down her name. She had taken enough of that with the Washington bureau, now she was respected and didn't need him bringing down her name.

"Is that what you think of me?" he asked. "I always thought you liked being my partner. I didn't think you cared what they said about you."

Scully shrugged. "People change Mulder. I'm respected and I'm no longer being laughed at for chasing after things that don't exist. It was fun for awhile. I liked having a reputation, but here....." she shook her head. "I can't have one. There are too many things that I need.....I can't have someone bringing all that down and away from my grasp."

Mulder nodded. He understood. His reputation was still terrible and it would only hurt her. He stood up. "I guess that this is it." he stepped over to her. "Let's be friends, Scully. At least give me your friendship. I need someone to trust."

"Not everyone is out to get you, Mulder. You had me so paranoid for years, and now I've learned to trust others." she smiled. "I still trust you enough to let me do what I want."

"All right......" he paused. "Listen I'm going to go outside and wait. Try not to take to long." he quickly left leaving her alone in the apartment. Down in the parking lot he cried. There wasn't much left for him with out Scully. 'Maybe tomorrow.' he thought hopefully and slid into the passenger seat of Scully's car.

Scully glanced down at her dog and then cried. Without the FBI there was nothing left for her. She was glad that Mulder was back, but she was so afraid to work with him. Once again her hand traveled to her cheek.

The pain had long since left her cheek, but the tingling sensation was still there. With out Mulder there was no tomorrow. There really wasn't even a today.
