Hello, my name is Kevin, and I am a part of the KCC Network. We are a group of Catholics dedicated to keeping Catholics Catholic. We have many areas and branches in our Network that give classes on different topics concerning Catholic Doctrines, and other interesting areas. For this website, I decided to give a Marian study to help those who may be a bit shaky in the area of Mariology(the Study of Mary). Topics covered are: The Immaculate Conception, Co-Redemptrix, Mediatrix of All Grace, Advocate, The Queenship of Heaven, Mistress of Creation(including the world), Queen of the Angels, Mother of God, Perpetual Virginity, and the Assumption. Please, bare with me. I am still learning, and if any errors are discovered, once brought to my attention, they Will Be Corrected Immediately. Concerning the Titles of Co-Redemptrix, Mediatrix of All Grace, and Advocate, I understand they are controversial, and very misinterpretable. They are here to clear any misinterpretations, BUT, I want to make it very clear that I am not petitioning Rome to declare them as official Catholic Dogma, the only reason why they are here is so you may have a better understanding of what they are all about. Again, I petition NOT for Rome to declare them official Dogma, and encourage others not to.
The Immaculate Conception: Lets first define the term. "The Immaculate Conception" means that the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived in the womb of her mother(whom Tradition has named St.Anne)through the natural means of conception, only that she was Preserved from Original Sin by a Singular Grace of God. Throughout her life, as a result, remained sinless and guilt-free of its effects. How can one prove this Biblically, especially when the Bible says, "For all have sinned, and have fallen short of the Glory of God."(Romans 3:23). I bring you to Luke 1:28, "Rejoice! O Highly Favored Daughter, the Lord is with thee!" The Greek used for "Highly Favored" was kecharitomene(which means "Full of Grace"). How can she be "Full of Grace" and be sinful? As it is, sin blocks the Operation of Grace in the Soul. It is an impossibility to be full of both. "The Greek wording conveys something that the newer translations leave out...... it indicates a perfection of Grace." notes Karl Keating in his book "Catholicism and Fundamentalism--The Attack on 'Romanism' by 'Bible Christians". Some may argue the point of Luke 1:47, "My Spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour." How can she call God her Saviour and be free of sin? God was indeed her Saviour, as He saved her from sin, at conception, not after. She only Praised God for His Action.
Co-Redemptrix: Ok., first things first. She is not a literal Redemptrix. Jesus is The Redeemer, period. However, she does have a hand in the Redemption that cannot be ignored, or just shoved away. She 'supplied"(poor choice of words, but for a better wanting, this is it)the humanity(genetics, whatever)that The Redeemer needed TO Redeem us. She has a hand in the Redemption, a unique role in the Redemption. Remember, the words Redemption and Redeemer are same, but, are different in endings(-mptrix and -mer). She is a Co in the process of the RedempTION, not a literal RedeeMER. Jesus accomplished the Redemption because He is the RedeeMER. Our Lady has the hand in the Redemption, she isn't the RedeeMER. There is a difference. She is WITH the Redeemer, not THE Redeemer. See the distinction? When presented to a non-Catholic(another form of the explanation that is), he said, "That is an interesting theory, but, it isn't in the Bible." yes, it is, if one would look. At the Annunciation, The Virgin said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to thy word." (Luke 1:38). Accordingly, that did a lot. With that Fiat, it incarnated the Son of God, and allowed the Process of the Redemption(which, ultimately proves Mediatrix of all Grace.)to take place, with the Incarnation. She gave her "yes" to God! This is her hand in the Redemption! She supplied the humanity The Redeemer needed TO Redeem us! That makes her an indirect Co-Redemptrix! Sounds easy enough, but, what's the problem? The wording is terribly important. What confuses people is the grammatical language of it. RedemPTION indicates the process as a whole, while RedeeMER indicates the one who accomplished the process of the RedemPTION.
Mediatrix of All Grace: Once again, I take you to Luke 1:38 with the Virgin's Fiat to God's question." In that simple little Fiat, Heaven and earth were joined in the womb of the Virgin. How? Because the Son of God came from Heaven to earth through a "portal"(so to speak)and that portal is the Blessed Virgin. Christ "crossed a bridge" to get to earth, and that bridge IS the Virgin! Accordingly, since that bridge still exists today in the Blessed Virgin, that proves her as the Mediatrix of all Grace. Because, ultimately, ALL Grace is from God(naturally), it comes to us through the WORK of the Redemption(Co-Redemptrix? Sound familiar? See how it all ties in?). Now, if Our Lady IS that Portal, through which God came to earth for our Redemption, and all Grace comes to us from God, through the WORK of the Redemption, then, she is Mediatrix of all Grace. Easy. It is high Mariology, so I recommend anyone to pray about it. It all comes down to Luke 1:38. However, it is a True Title for Our Lady.
Advocate: This is the easiest one, and the most summed up in words. Hasn't your mother ever defended you from a punishment, or even try to lessen it from your father? So it is with the Blessed Virgin. "Just as your parents cooperated with God in giving you life, so didn't Our Lady cooperate with God in giving you your Spiritual Life in Christ."(taken from My Daily Bread book) She is your Mother.
Queen of Heaven, the Angels, and Mistress of Creation: As we are adopted children of God(Ephesians 1:5)is it that the Blessed Mother who was without sin(Luke 1:28) an adopted child of God? Of course not! We are adopted children of God because we fell from Grace and Friendship with God at the Fall(Genesis 3:6-19) and needed to be restored. Christ restored this(Ephesians 1:5), and we are able to enjoy a participation in the Life of God(Grace and Friendship)again. She who never lost God's Grace is not an adopted child of God, but a True child--therefore, she has a legitimate claim on God's Kingdom and His creation. Hence--we call her "Mistress of Creation", "Queen of Heaven", "Queen of the Angels", etc., Because of that rightful claim she has a True Daughter of God. Some may ask, "That's limiting God, and that can't happen." Correct, it can't. No one limited anything, God purposely and knowingly Willed this to be. He Willed that a woman should be raised-up as a "Powerful woman"(Song of Solomon 6:10) only to give Himself Greater Glory. In seeing her raised and "Highly Favored", one would Glorify Him who Willed this to be, for only God raises and lowers people. All of this came to fulfillment at her Coronation. For, when we die and if we are all found worthy of entering Heaven and given a "Crown of merit"(1 Peter 5:4,6), shall not she also? The only difference is she received a 'higher' crown in 'status' because she heard the Word of God Perfectly and kept it perfectly. Luke 11:27-28 illustrates this. "While He was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to Him, 'Blessed is the womb that bore and carried you and the breasts at which You nursed!' He replied, 'Rather, Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it." Here, Jesus pointed out 2 things, her greatest Glory--hearing God's Word and observing it, and that those who hear and observe God's Word are Blessed. As she was without sin and therefore imperfection, and being taught by the Divine Master she observed it perfectly--as Jesus would only be able to teach it perfectly for....."God cannot be deceived, nor deceive."(Scripture reference is unknown momentarily). Romans 8:15-17 sums this up well. "For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry 'Abba, Father!' The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him." Now, think to yourself 'what about someone who is a True child of God?' Hence, we say she is the Queen of Angels, Heaven, Mistress of creation, etc., because God rewarded her as His True Daughter.
Mother of God: The Council of Ephesus in 431 gave the Blessed Mother the title of "Theotokos"--literally "God-bearer". This was given her as a response of the claims of Nestorius-a Bishop who claimed Jesus had 2 Natures, not One in the Hypostatic Union. He wanted her as "Christokos"--"Christ-bearer"; but, this was a heresy. Colossians 2:9 states, "For in Him, dwells the whole Fullness of the Deity bodily." Christ is also a man, making Him the "Godman". His One Nature is comprised of 2 Natures--Divine and human, but, were One in what is called the Hypostatic Union. So, He has One Nature. How does this apply to the Blessed Mother? In taking human form, Jesus became a human while retaining His Divinity hence making both Natures the One. In being Jesus' mother, she became the Mother of God because you can't split the Nature of Christ. If you say she is the Mother of Jesus, you split the Nature of Christ right into Divine and human saying she has this part and God has the other. As Colossians states, this would be a heresy. Hence, she is the "Theotokos". Nestorius' claim was both a Christological and Marian error.
Coming soon, the explanations of The Assumption, and Perpetual Virginity
The Blessed Mother is the greatest enemy of hell next to The Lord Jesus Christ, and the forces of hell recognize this fact. Nothing, however, will erase her. Her Immaculate Heart will triumph.
