- Dance Years
- I have been studying Belly Dance since
the Fall of 1992.
-
- Dance Background
- In the Fall of 1992, I began learning
the Cabaret (night club) style of dance. I was performing
on stage within six months. In the Summer of 1993, I
joined a newly forming troupe consisting of other dancers
with relatively the same experience and number of years
dedicated to this dance. We called ourselves,
"Akasha Winds". We were five strong for two
years and based out of Austin, Texas. We performed in a
number of places quite often. We also began solo dancing
as well as experimenting with duets and trios. After
dancing for two years, I performed my first solo and
redid it on a cruise ship a few weeks later. After two
year of dancing with Akasha Winds, I moved out of the
state and relocated in the Portland, Oregon area, while
Akasha Winds continues in Austin.
-
- In Portland I began studying strictly
American Tribal Belly Dance for one year. I began to miss
the Cabaret style, so I commuted to Vancouver, Washington
and began studying this style again. I continued with the
Tribal style for another half year. I decided it was time
to develop my own stylization of this dance form, in
other words, make it personal.
-
- I continued with the Cabaret style and
student-taught belly dance in Vancouver for some time.
Currently, I teach belly dance with a partner in the
Portland area as well as perform solos every now and
then. Since the beginning of 1997, I have been steadily
studying the sacred and spiritual movements comprising
this art form. I dance not for the sake of performance,
but for the transforming power of the dance and teach
others about this as well.
-
- Professional Background
- Belly Dancing is a hobby of mine, but
it has definitely become a large part of who I am. By
training I am an Art Therapist amidst other special
training's and professional licensures. When I left
Austin and relocated to Portland, I also left my private
practice. It was time to write my book about
creativity--owning and honoring our creative inheritance.
Currently, it is written and I am involved in the tedious
process of publication. In the mean time, I dance. Belly
Dancing has become another form of my creative and
artistic expression. My body has a forum for expression
and the dance is its voice. I also utilize my
psychotherapy skills as an on-call therapist and workshop
facilitator.
