Top Nine Dogs

These are the 9 most popular breed of dogs as told by Mademoiselle magazine.

The Top Nine: Here is a look at the nine most popular breeds in the U.S.

Beagles are friendly and playful (read: need lots of excercise), but they are not highly trainable and they tend to bark. If you have thin walls, forget it.
Dachshunds are petite, good-natured and smart. They can get into mischief if they're left alone all day, and need regular exercise to keep their weight down.
German Sheperds are trainable and even-tempered. Grooming isn't a top priority, but training is. You should enroll them in obedience school and maintain structure in their lives.
Golden Retrievers are affectionate beauties. Their fair hair requires daily brushing, and they need tons of contact and exercise.
Labrador Retrievers-in chocolate, black, or yellow-are friendly, gentle workout companions (they love to swim). What they don't love is being cooped up in a small place.
Poodles come in three sizes: toy, miniature and standard. They are eneretic (think exercise) and known for their smarts.
Rottweilers are sturdy and protective, with pushy personalities. Obedience training and regular attention are required to avoid behavioral problems. They're great protection dogs.
Cocker Spaniels are high-maintenance pets in many ways-they need daily grooming and exercise, and they're very stubborn. But they're also affectionate.
Pomeranians, the original lap dogs, are playful and affectionate. Their small size makes them great for cramped apartments, but they don't like to be left on their own. Their coats require regular brushing to stay at their fluffy best. Beware of yippiness.---Cintra Scott
