Then and Now . . .
In September of 1998, the
Midland Park High School hosted
a USSBA Band Competition. Group I to IV
marching bands from North Jersey competed, including Ridgewood, Verona, Fair
Lawn, Ramapo, Sparta, etc. Midland Park Marching Band performed an exhibition,
as host band.
The MPHS Marching Band is currently under the direction of David Marks whose
leadership has caused the band to enjoy very successful 1997 and 1998 seasons.
The "Band That Never Stood Still" tradition lives on . . .
In honor of Dr. Donald S. George, who was responsible for launching the music
program at Midland Park High School from its founding in 1957 to 1968, the
Donald S. George Award was given to the marching band
for best overall effect. This year, that award went to the Ridgewood High
School Marching Band for an excellent show.
The introduction of the Dr. Donald S. George Award for "Best Overall
Performance" marks a first in the history of the Midland Park High School.
To continue honoring Dr. George for his valuable service to MPHS from 1957
to 1968, this award will remain as the top award given at future competitions
hosted by the Midland Park Marching Band.

A 30 minute video has just been produced
by the Bergen Community College Broadcast Dept., which is named after the
theme of this page, MPHS Marching Band, Then and Now.
It contains:
1.) a slide show intro of the "old" school vs. "new".
2.) pictures of the marching bands from those "early years"
3.) pictures of the 1998/99 band
4.) video footage of the 1998/99 marching band exhibition at the "Music in
the Park" Competition
5.) video excerpts of Ridgewood High School Marching Band show (winners of
the trophy at the competition)
6.) early pictures of Dr. George and a recent video interview of him in Wisconsin
in September 1998, commenting on the naming of the trophy after him.
