The San Onofre Surf Kayak Association is a small group of paddlers dedicated to having as much fun as possible on all forms of paddle craft. The SOSKA is committed to the promotion of our sport through education, brotherhood, and the exhibition of ever-better radical surf maneuvers.
Any paddler who wishes to become a member is automatically a Life Member in Good Standing. All we require is that you must share in the spirit of our organization. Membership is free.
If you've been down to San Onofre lately you may have noticed (or not) two small signs. One is the letter "O" and the other is the letter "K." They are positioned near the drainage along the north end of Dog Patch. These signs represent the northernmost boundary by which we must not paddle beyond. The signs are staggered such that when you are out on the water, they read "OK" if you are within the boundary. If the signs read "KO" you are must paddle south. Please respect this boundary so that our privilege to surf San Onofre is not jeapordized! Many of us surf right along this line and usually find ourselves lined up with board surfers. If you are a novice, or are surfing a craft of limited manuverablility (i.e. a big sit-on-top), I encourage you to line-up further south - away from the board surfers.
Paddle surfing is also permitted along the entire stretch of beach south of the power plant, down to the Camp Pendelton. These areas are accessible by trails from the main campgrounds of the state park.
Now that you are aware of the guidelines for paddle-surfing at San Onofre, I encourage you to share this knowledge with others out on the water. I make it a point to ask any paddlers, that I do not recognize, if they are aware of the O.K. signs. Our self-policing actions will help preserve our privilege to launch at San Onofre.
The SOSKA is committed to peaceful coexistence with all who share the waves. The relationship between surfers and paddlers has been tenuous at best. This is largely due to inexperienced paddlers encroaching upon traditional surf territory and behaving recklessly. To gain the respect, if not at least the tolerance, of surfers, paddlers should learn surf etiquette. If surfers recognize that a paddler can handle himself in the surf safely and with due consideration they are often inclined to tolerate paddlers.
Recently, one of our paddling brethren from Colorado spent a week camping and surfing at San Onofre. He had the opportunity to speak to a good many board surfers. He said that the prevailing complaint among the board surfers was that kayakers had dropped in on them and very often dropped in backwards. I doubt there were as many clashes as he was told about but I have witnessed at least one such incident myself. New paddlers, or river paddlers just beginning to play in the surf, must understand that there are rules in the surf. Learn them.
