Guest Register and Scrapbook

"THE WALTON HOUSE, DELAWARE COUNTY'S POPULAR HOTEL, WALTON, N.Y."
Postcard Printed by the Ruben Publishing Co., Newburgh, N.Y. circa 1940

The Walton House Hotel Register identifies the patrons who ate dinner at and stayed in the hotel on Delaware Street in Walton, New York, from mid-1880 to June 1881.  Each person's name, residence, time of arrival, room number, and wake-up-call were recorded in the book.  Although guests came from as far away as Germany, most of those who spent the night or enjoyed a meal were from Delaware County.  Andes, Bovina, Cannonsville, Colchester, Davenport, Delhi, Downsville, Franklin, Hamden, Hancock, Masonville, Meredith, Middletown, Sidney, and Walton are all frequently represented.

During this time period, the Walton House Hotel was owned and operated by James and Jonathan R. Launt.  Their leather-bound register eventually fell into the hands of Thomas Pine, who used it as a scrapbook.  Thomas pasted over most of the guest names with memorabilia, newspaper clippings, advertisements, and receipts dating from 1790 to 1909. These items contain extensive genealogical data.  This site is dedicated to making that information available to the public.
