INTRODUCTION

The Wardlaws were not a clan as such in centuries past, but we are now the Clan Wardlaw Association. See the link on home page telling about this most important new venture.

Most clans were from the Highlands and the Wardlaws were from the Lowlands around Dunfermline, Midlothian, Galloway, Wilton, etc. Although they were not a clan as such they were very early associated with the Clan Maxwell, Clan Macdougall, also the Royal Stewart line thru Mary Stewart who was the wife of one of the first Henry Wardlaws.

The Wardlaw Coat-of-Arms goes from the very first pure arms, to when it was quartered with Valoniis. It has stayed pretty much the same as that down through the years. There are various renderings of it depending on where you look. The different books on coats of arms show it basically the same.

These coats-of-arms belonged to the various Wardlaw families and cannot be used by just anyone. Scottish heraldry is a very interesting and complex subject. Just because we are Wardlaws does not give us the right to use these arms. We have now applied to the Lord Lyon of Scotland as the Clan Wardlaw Association and we will be getting our own distinct version of our beloved coat-of-arms.

This is one of the first versions of the pure arms out of the book "Genealogy of the Wardlaw Family" by Joseph G. Wardlaw.

Wardlaw of Wilton

An early version of the pure arms of Wardlaw before it was quartered.

This is from Bartholomew's 'Map of Scotland of Old'.

Wardlaw of Wilton

A later one from "Wardlaws in Scotland" by John C. Gibson., showing the Wardlaw arms quartered with Valoniis. The Wardlaw arms are three mascles and the Valoniis arms are water budgetts.

This is an interesting version that I found on the web. It can be seen at:
