BALDWIN, NEW YORK
The Chief's Office and the
Officers and Personnel of Hook and Ladder Company Two of the
Baldwin Fire Department regretfully announce the passing of
Former Captain,
Firefighter Gerard J. Brown Senior.
"Pop" Brown was the senior member of Hook and Ladder
Company Two with 49 years of service. This being the longest
tenure in the Company since it's inception. Jerry joined Hook and
Ladder Two in 1953 and served with distinction as a firefighter
throughout the fifties. In 1958 Jerry was awarded the
"Legion of Valor Award" the Fire Departments highest
honor for the successful rescue of a woman from a burning
building. Ex-Captain Browns actions were described as "Above
and beyond the call of duty" and his actions were carried
out in the finest traditions of the fire service. Jerry was
elected to the office of Lieutenant by his fellow firefighters in
1962 then rose to the rank of Captain by 1964. Jerry was
described as one of the most active members of the company
throughout his career. The seventies brought a continuation of
the firefighting Browns tradition when Jerry's oldest son John
joined the ranks of Ladder 2. Later in that decade JerryJR. was
to be sworn into the ranks of Ladder 2 with the eighties bringing
Jerry's youngest son Bill into the Ladder Company. Jerry, Sr.
worked side by side with his sons and brothers from Ladder 2
until recent years. He was the chauffeur and trainer of 4 Ladder
Trucks well into the nineties. Jerry remained an active
firefighter until his death March 12, 2002. We hold in highest
regard his Bravery, Dedication and devotion to duty to the
Baldwin Fire Department and the community of Baldwin.
Fire Department service will be held 8PM Thursday evening at the
Fullerton Funeral home on Merrick Rd. In Baldwin. Christian
Services and full Firematic honors will be held at the St.
Christopher's Church Merrick Road Baldwin on Friday at 1030 AM.
Celebration of Jerry's career and life will be at Ladder Two's
quarters directly following the Mass. The cremation will be
private. The family has asked in lieu of flowers donations be
sent to The Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center Foundation.
