Selena Lockridge
Sophomore - Nashville, Tennessee
As an athlete:
Selena returns after an outstanding freshman year, ready to climb to the top of the OVC. In fact, she could easily be competing for 2 OVC Championship medals next May...she's that valuable to the team as a 400 meter competitor. Selena ran her high school years at Nashville's Maplewood High, where she was a rival of Kenya's (Hillwood). To tell you how good of an overall athlete she is, she won the '95 TN State Pentathlon title along with being named the '95 Track Woman of the Year. She was named the MVP of the prestigious Doug Hall Relays in '95 and '96, and finished 3rd in the 400m final in '95. She capped things off in the summer of '97 by running on the third place 1600 and 3200 relays at the Junior National Championships.
But she was just getting warmed up. In her freshman year at APSU, she surprised a lot of people by entering a loaded field in the OVC 400 final and coming up 3rd...as only a freshman...recording a 56.60 on our own track. She was also a very reliable anchor leg on a 4x400 relay team that broke the school record almost every time they stepped on the track, and that eventually finished 2nd in the OVC. Selena can also rely on her leg speed and drop down for the open 200, 100 and the 4x100 when necessary. In fact, Selena had the fastest time of any Lady Gov in the 100, 200 and the 400 last year making her our overall best sprinter last year as well. Despite all this, she has taken on the challenge (even though she said she was an "honorary member") of going from the shortest sprints all the way up to the 5000 meters of cross country. And Selena is hanging in there and doing well, in a position to be the team's all-important 5th scorer. For '98, she wants to take down her 400m time by a second and to practice harder. She also stresses that she wants the team to work hard and to function as one unit.
More Personally...
Selena (born November 30, 1978) is a Biology major, working hard to prepare for graduate school where she will pursue her masters and eventually wind up in the field of physical therapy. Probably making more money than me. She enjoys meeting and being around other people, especially those who are like herself, and "making people smile". Selena says she has a great deal of respect for her father because she admits that "I can be a handful at times!"...and she also is respectful of Coach Forde because "...he has given me so much confidence for myself and my running".
Selena on life: "Hard work, dedication and determination are the keys to success."
