1998 Women's Cross Country

Ayesha Maycock

Sophomore   -    Christ Church, Barbados

As an athlete:

This past spring, Ayesha came to APSU from the island nation of Barbados and simply set the team and the OVC on fire. She rewrote the school record book completely, setting APSU records both indoor (LJ, TJ) and outdoor (LJ, TJ, 400mH) while running on 4 different school record breaking relay teams to put her name in the record book an insane 9 times in one semester. She's just that good. On top of that, she won 4 medals and scored or contributed in 31 points at OVC Outdoors. As a freshman, that's almost frightening. To say that she's our most diverse athlete is pretty bold considering that Selena was a state heptathalon champ, but she runs every thing from the 100 to the 5000 (XC), hurdles and jumps three different events. Her best events (?) are probably the long and the triple jump where she was popping near 19' and near 39.5' nearly every meet. And so far, the coaching staff has been very pleasantly surprised with her tenacity and guts in running cross country for the first time in her life, as she is running in the top 4 with great consistency. She was rewarded her for efforts by being named the MVP of the outdoor squad this year. She should have been given a blue cape with an "S" on the back.

Back in Barbados, Ayesha excelled in school and on the track for the Crombermere School. She was named Vitrix Ludorum in both '95 and '97, and made the Carifta Games in '94 (one year after Ann-Marie competed) winning the Silver Medal in the high jump. At the 1994 CAC Junior Championships in Trinadad, she again struck for a medal (bronze) in the high jump. I think she's being modest when she says that she has numerous school records at her former school. If she pitched in on 9 in one semester here, I just wonder what she did in 4 years....

More Personally...

Ayesha (born February 21, 1979) is a Business Management major, working hard to prepare for graduate school where she will pursue her masters. Like a lot of us, Ayesha also enjoys other sports, especially volleyball and basketball. She expresses a great deal of respect for the recently-retired first lady of track, JJK (I wonder if she's looked at my JJK Farewell Scrapbook?). She hopes that the '99 team continues building on its successes and also plans to better ALL (have mercy) of her performances up to this point...I also think that Ayesha is one of the easiest people to be around that you could ever meet, that her personality is as good as gold.

Ayesha on training: "Any workout that you are given will benefit you sooner or later and some athletes don't realize that. I know that we get really tired and it seems that we can't go any further...but at that stage it is mind over matter. Once you have the discipline and respect for authority, you will succeed because you have the potential to be the best you can be, at any cost."
