Luke's Recap: (Ayesha goes off...)
Why did 3 school records fell by the wayside at the MTSU Valentine's Day Invite for the Lady Govs? Because of the freshman phenom from Barbados, Ayesha Maycock. After pacing the Lady Govs high jump squad with a 5'2" jump, she commenced to dominate the long jump competition, burying her next closest competitor by 7 inches and eclipsing Darlene Shipman's 1993 indoor record of 18'3" when she sailed 18.06.75". Then it was on to the triple jump where she settled for second place but again flew to a new Austin Peay indoor standard, jumping 37'01.50". To wrap up her stellar day, she added a solid 58 second leg to the Lady Govs 4x400 relay which blasted by the previous school record (set in 1992) of 3:57.81 to finish only behind Miss. St. in a time of 3:55.10. Joining her on the squad were Kenya Avant, Evette Edwards, and Selena Lockridge. It was also good enough to hold off indoor rival MTSU, who recorded a 3:56.80. Never before had a Lady Govs squad eclipsed three of their own records in one meet!
It was also a good weekend for Melissa Olivo and Ann-Marie Browne, who continue to improve their mile times heading into OVC's. It was a tough weekend for Emily Anthony, who suffered all day from hamstring tightness and had to be pulled from the record setting 1600 relay team. Coach seems to think once he can get her back on the relay and running at full strength, the squad can make a serious run at 3:50 and who knows what at conference in two weeks. It is definitely an exciting time for Lady Govs track...
Next competition for the Lady Govs (and for Coach, Mike, Jay and ME!):
Southern Illinois University Open - Carbondale, Ill. - Feb. 20, 1998
