POPSICLE STICKS

Put various shapes on popsicle sticks. Hold up one at a time and ask the children to tell you the shape, color and flavor it might be if it were a popsicle.

FEELY BOX


"Feely box" with a face drawn on front. Cut a mouth hole large enough for a hand to fit inside. Put in a shape (start with circle, square, and triangle). Let child feel that shape and see if he/she can tell what shape it is. Later other shapes or objects can be used (ex: a clothespin, sponge, feather, etc.)

Another type of feely box is a box filled with tiny styrofoam bits and the shape can be buried within the styrofoam. A sock also makes a good feely box.

BLINDFOLD GAME

Blindfold one child and then give him/her a shape to feel and tell what it is. Take turns doing this. later this can be used for textures and weight.

DRAW SHAPES

Draw shapes on the air and see if the children can guess what shape you are drawing. Let the children draw with you or have a turn in trying to trick the other children.

POSTER

Use any poster and ask the children to point to the various chapes within the poster. (Ex: a circle could be a wheel on a car)

SHAPE BOOK

* Crayons
* Construction paper
* Stapler

(1) Stack 2 - 4 pieces of paper and fold them to resemble a book. Staple pages on fold.
(2) Help children print "My Shape Book"
on cover.
(3) Write the names of shapes, such as rectangle, triangle, star, square, circle, oval, diamond. They can draw shapes on pages and color them.


PLATE OF SHAPES

* Construction paper
* Scissors
* Paper plates
* Crayons
* Glue
* Brass fasteners

(1) Have 4 different shapes cut out of construction paper. (2 ea of each shape for each child) (triangle, circle, square, diamond, etc)
(2) Have the children draw lines to divide the plate into 8 wedges.
(3) Have the children glue shapes onto the plate. 1 Shape per wedge. (have them mixed up).
(4) Cut out construction paper arrows and attach 2 in center of each plate with fastener.
(5) Have the children point arrows to matching pairs.

PAPER SHAPES


Cut out circles, squares and triangles - all different colors. Allow the children to glue the shapes onto contruction paper making geometric patterns on the paper.

RECTANGLE
