Journey North Current NewsOne of the projects I'm working on right now is with Journey North--a wonderful project to teach kids about migration through the Internet. Check it out!

And check our Journey North's fabulous Ruby-throated Hummingbird photos, from new nest each day through the babies fledging!  (I wrote the captions for them!)

To get answers to your bird questions, check out Ask the Birder or send me an e-mail lauraerick@aol.com.

One of the issues I care most about is the effects of cats on bird populations. To read more about it, check out "Cats and Wildlife: A Conservation Dilemma." This is not copyrighted, and the authors encourage copying and making it available to everyone in the universe. Cats.  And I am a proud member of the American Bird Conservancy, whose "Cats Indoors" campaign is a really great one! Check them out.

Some of the things I have written include an Essay About Hunting published in NorthLife magazine in October, 1999, a NorthLife magazine cover story about my birding experiences in Duluth, and a highly opinionated article about my reaction to the proposed Mourning Dove Season in Wisconsin.  I am currently working on a couple of projects with Gerard Fuehrer, and hope eventually to produce a book about Blue Jays (Nature's perfect bird) and some children's books.  I am searching for a publisher for a children's picture book called The Curious Adventures of Max the Maggot.  At some point I want to start what will perhaps be my magnum opus, a book about the birds in Disney cartoons. If you have serious or non-serious information about these topics, let me know. Also, if you have program ideas for "For the Birds," or comments, send me an e-mail.

I present slide programs about birds for adults and for children. I used to bring my federally- and state-licensed Blue Jay Sneakers along. Sneakers could say "Hi" and "C'mon," and whistle. She was a wonderful companion and partner for almost seven years, but she died on New Year's Eve,1997. In April, 2000, I received an Eastern Screech-Owl from Mona Rutger's "Back to the Wild" facility in Castalia, Ohio.  Archimedes has been coming with me to many of my programs and is proving to be a fantastic education bird.

My programs for school groups are arranged through Hartley Nature Center in Duluth. 218-724-6735.

If you would like a list of program topics I can do for any age or type of audience, or to arrange an adult program, drop me an e-mail. lauraerick@aol.com. I currently charge $150 for an hour-long program within 50 miles of Duluth, and $300 plus expenses for more distant travel.  In some unique cases I can make exceptions, but please remember that I'm trying to make a living at this, and don't get retirement benefits or things that most people take for granted.  I'm NOT going to do free programs for a group of doctors planning a trip to an exotic location that I could never afford, for example.

Once a month an article of mine appears in The Minneapolis Star Tribune's "Home and Garden" section. For more information about the Star-Tribune, check out Star Tribune, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota...  An article of mine also appears monthly in Your Life Magazine.

Five public radio stations carry my program, "For the Birds," which airs 3-5 times a week (when I'm caught up). You can listen to "For the Birds" live on KUMD's site, every morning at about 7:30 and again about 8:45 CDT.  It's only about 4 minutes long, so you might miss it!

I've had even more visits to this site than this number indicates!  Go figure!

This page was designed by ME!!  Not that it was all that hard, but I'm sort of proud of it because I'm technologically challenged.  It only took a weekend, using software I found just lying around the house--well, on my computer--and it was lots of fun.  After I designed it, one of my friends said she had to pay $300 to someone to design her business page.  No way could I have afforded THAT!  Let me know what you think!  Send me an e-mail
