DARBY - Leominster area - John Darby went to Groton in 1695 which is not very far from Leominster. There were lots of Darby's in the area. His wife was Mary Blanchard, married about 1698. They had children James & William who moved to Canterbury Conn, and Oliver who I believe moved to Taunton Mass, and Mary. Would like to know where John Darby came from? He may have called himself John Darbyshire, but his descendants did not. They called themselves Darby's, and I see in the Barbour Collection that he also was referred to as Darby in records. However, someone has told me that he was called John Darbyshire originally in the first records. I would like to know where he came from, as far as did he immigrate, or was he the son of Edward & Susanna Darby, married in Boston in 1659. They did have a son named John, and our family history says he is their son - however, don't have anything from the "official records" that indicates that is so. There were a lot of Darby's living around him from Leominster and Westminster - don't know if they were related, if they came from children of Edward & Susanna, or Abraham & Hannah, also living in Boston in 1650's - or if the Leominster Darby's and Westminster Darby's were children of the Plymouth brothers who immigrated in the 1630's, Robert, & John. Any information on Darby's? Respond directly to Lynda & B.J. Ozinga - Ozlyn@egl.net (Posted 11/22/98)

RICE - Leominster - My g-g-gm, Martha Abigail PIERCE (b 18 Jul 1845) married Adin RICE 5 May 1868. I know nothing of him or his family, but family stories are that the RICE's were a prominant Leominster family and that Adin disowned his daughter (my g-gm) for marrying beneath her station. Other Leominster surnames (mostly spouses of my PIERCE ancestors) are: WOOD, STONE, JOSLYN(also spelled JOSLIN), TOWER. Other possibilities (from middle names) include Fiske, Richardson, Almonto, Edson, Burrage. Respond directly to Tom Murphy - tompmurphy@yahoo.com - (posted 8/30/98)
ROGERS- Leominster - Request any input on Harry, descendant of
Wilfred Billings GIBSON and Carrie Isabel Rogers Gibson of Leominister. They
had four sons, Ralph , Harry Waldo, Wilfred Elkanah and Warren Herbert, and
one daughter Lois. Wilfred Billing GIBSON was born April 07, 1868 in
Leominster, MA, and died December 30, 1936 in Leominster, MA. He married
Carrie Isabel ROGERS January 28, 1889 in Leominster, MA, daughter of Elkanah
ROGERS and Caroline CHASE.
ROUISSE, Caroline/a - Leominster - married Simeon BIRD. Who were her parents? She was born July 1859 in "French Canada". Believe Carrie had a brother Joseph who married Salina Trambly in Leominster 1888. Simon and Rose later went to West Boylston. SSMITH - Leominster - The 1790 Census lists a Joseph Smith residing in Leominster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Also listed in this family is one free white male under 16 and three free white females. The females are (I believe) his wife Abigail Goodridge, born 24 Nov 1756 to Joshua Goodridge and Lydia Stearns in Lunenburg, MA; their daughter, Betsy, born in Leominster 3 May 1784; and their daughter, Lucinda, born in Leominster 19 Apr 1788. Joseph and Abigail filed their marriage intentions at Leominster 7 Sep 1783 and were married 11 Sep 1783. I assume that they were probably married at Lunenburg. Joseph was born about 1752, place unknown. They had a third daughter, Polley, born at Leominster 27 May1792. Lucinda died in Leominster 9 May 1840, a spinster, and was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery. This is all of the information that I have on this family.
I am especially interested in learning who might have been the male under
sixteen listed in this family in the 1790 Census. Could it have been my
great-great-grandfather, Joseph Smith, 2nd who died in Leominster 21 Jun
1834? His age at date of death is given as 49. Based upon his date of death,
he would have had to have been born between 22 Jun 1784 and 21 Jun 1785.
According to his son, Lorenzo's, Death Certificate he was born in Vermont.
However, according to a Veteran's Grave Registration Card on file at the
Leominster Public Library (War of 1812) he was born in Leominster. I have
never been able to find a record of his birth anywhere. His age would fit
with the above Smith/Goodridge family and it would explain why he was referred
to as Joseph 2nd.
SMITH - Leominster - I am seeking any information on the Joseph SMITH who was born 5 Jun 1785 at Cavendish Twp., Windsor, VT, the son of Moses SMITH and Lucy (?). Is he the same Joseph SMITH who married Louise MARBLE 21 Apr 1812 at Ashburnham MA and resided at Leominster, MA where he died 21 Jun 1834? Joseph and Louisa had Lorenzo, Elvira, George, Alpha and Elbridge all of whom were born in Leominster. Joseph was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery. After his death, Louisa removed to Ashburnham where her parents had lived. Joseph and Louisa were my gg-grandparents. He was known as Joseph, 2nd and the story is that there were two unrelated Joseph Smiths living in Leominster, MA at the same time and mine, the younger, was referred to as Joseph 2nd to avoid confusion. Whittemore - Lunenburg/Leominster - Hi my name is Mary. I have been working on the Whittemore side of my family for 2 years now and it is slow going. Mabey you can help I have a list of descendents of Josiah Whittemore. I am the great +++++ grandaughter of Josiah. He lived in Lunenburg Ma in 1773 to I think 1776. His father was Thomas Whittemore , I don't know who his mother was. He married Lucy Snow of Lunenburg, her father was John Snow of Lunenburg , I don't know her mother's name. I know he also lived in Leominster. And I was told that he served in the Revolution. He had 10 children by Lucy , I guess Lucy died and he may have married again to a Martha Parkhurst Rider and had 4 children by her. If you have any information I could use I would dance for a week. Josiah's father Thomas came from England to Ma in the 1600's . I think there was a Ura Snow mabey Lucys brother and he married a Holly Ross. On my list of Whittemores I have 300 of Josiah's desendents. It is not easy to read but I will be glad to share it with any that need it. Thank you Mary Berry - berry1955@aol.com. Please resond directly to Mary. (Posted Sept. 16, 2000)
