Michael loves playing the guitarHis interest in the guitar came from his early fascination with the Beatles. In 7th grade, Mike started to learn chords and copped a few tricks from his brother, Patrick. In 1979, Patrick loaned his Fender Mustang electric guitar to Michael for him to use. From there, Michael took off on a journey, playing in bands such as Arion, Foolish and The Janes. All bands played cover songs and original music, giving Michael the opportunity to improvise and create his own guitar solos. "I enjoyed the freedom that original music offered. It got frustrating trying to learn all the riffs from a 'Yes' song! In fact, it's still frustrating!"

Michael's guitar influences:"I am continually amazed by the guitar as an instrument and find so many new and great players everywhere I turn," Michael said. While he has played the piano longer and shows more proficiency on the keys (to some), he still enjoys learning new idioms and patterns on the guitar. "On one hand, I appreciate learning new theory and tricks, but I also play a lot from the heart, and can have fun crafting a solo out of pure angst versus proper-sounding notes." Michael played all guitar parts on his CD, "Share the Disguise." (Michael Provence, a good friend, played a 2nd guitar on "Don't Tip The Milkman.")
