Welcome to Joy's World

Hi there...thank you for stopping by to check out what's happening in my little part of the world.  Next up is an excerpt from the piece I wrote on my adopted hometown...the quaint, historical village located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River...gateway to the Atlantic Ocean...Southport, NC.

The Town With Two Names

Joshua Potts had a dream.  The year was 1786.

Paradise found, perfection personified and healing winds were justification enough, Joshua announced to everyone with whom he came in contact, to divide, plat and set boundaries for the community he wanted to establish on the west bank of the Cape Fear River situated on the eastern shores of North Carolina.  However, the political powers down river in Wilmington listened to the river pilots who years earlier claimed the land by squatter's rights and the Eden that Joshua envisioned was doomed until Nov. 15, 1792 when Benjamin Smith, the Brunswick County Representative to the General Assembly in Raleigh, was threatened with a very short political career if he didn't petition the legislature.

And it passed.
