John Wing son of Daniel Wing & Hannah Swift The following history of the descendants of John Wing, son of Daniel Wing and grandson of the Rev. John Wing was submitted by Barbara Wing Haven. Our many thanks to Barbara for sharing her history with us. You can contact Barbara at jlhaven@sibcycline.comWe know of course that the Rev. John Wing was the first settled English pastor at the Hague and five publications are held by the British Museum. Some of his writings: "The Crowne Conjugall", "The Best Merchandise", "Abels Offering, or the Early, and Most Accepted Sacrifice of a Christian", "Jacob's Staff", "The Saints Advantage."Rev. John Wing returned to England in 1630, some think to accompany his father-in-law, Stephen Batchiler, to America, but the Reverend died in England. The Rev. John Wing's widow, Deborah Batchiler Wing and her 4 sons, John, Daniel, Stephen and Matthew came to America in 1632.Daniel, the 3rd child of Rev. John Wing and Deborah Batchiler Wing was born about 1615. He married Hannah Swift. A tablet was dedicated upon the grounds of Daniel's home in Sandwich, Massachusetts and it reads;" Daniel Wing...Son of the Rev. John and Deborah Wing, who came to Boston in 1632 with his mother and brothers John, Stephen and Matthew, with whom he settled in Sandwich in 1637. He bought this land of Andrew Hallett in 1640, and here he lived and died. He was an original member of the first Friend's Meeting in America, established at Spring Hill in 1659, and suffered great persecution at the hands of the Plymouth government in the cause of religious liberty. He died in 1697 and lies buried at Spring Hill. Erected in 1910 by the Wing Family of America, Incorported."Daniel of Sandwich has been characterized thusly: "The idealist and religionist."Daniel Wing and Hannah Swift Wing had 8 known children;Hannah, born July 28, 1642Lydia, born May 23, 1647Deborah, born Oct. 19, 1648Samuel, born June 28, 1652Hepzibah, born Sept, 1654John, born Nov. 14, 1656BeulahDaniel
JOHN WINGJohn Wing was born Nov. 14, 1656 and died Aug. 1, 1717. He was the 6th child of John and Hannah Swift Wing. John Wing was a Quaker and he married Martha Spooner. John and Martha were married about 1683.Since John Wing was a Quaker and the monthly meetings of the Friends drew its membership from far and wide...it is likely that he met Martha Spooner at one of those occasions. Martha Spooner was the 3rd child of William and Hannah Spooner of Acushnet in the Dartmouth purchase.John participated prominently in the early political affairs of Rochester, Massachusetts and was at different times, sealer of weights and measures, over-seer of highways and selectman of the town. John Wing signed his name with a mark. He was the first of the sons of Daniel to leave the home nest at Sandwich and he was evidently a man with the instincts of a pioneer. He left a large landed estate and made liberal provisions for his children in his will. The Rochester records show that he died Aug. 1, 1727. He undoubtedly lies buried in the Friends' burial place in Rochester (Buxxard Bay area).John Wing and Martha Spooner had 9 children;Stephen, born Sept 5, 1684Joseph, born Dec. 23, 1686Deborah, born Oct. 15, 1687John, born March 1, 1689Hannah, born Jan. 10, 1691Daniel, born Feb. 8, 1693Deborah, born Feb. 23, 1694Desire, born Feb. 3, 1699Samuel, born Nov. 12, 1704
JOHN WING JR.John Wing, son of John Wing and Martha Spooner was born March 1, 1689. He died in 1750...John was born in Rochester. Massachusetts. John married Experience Gifford, daughter of William and Mary Gifford, who, born October 7, 1685, was some four years his senior. On February 16, 1709, when young John was barely twenty years of age, his father "for and in consideration of love, etc." gave unto his "dutiful son John" 116 acres of land at Gret Neck in Rochester. Great Neck is upon one of the two extreme points which extend into Buzzards Bay from Rochester. Between these two points lie the quiet waters of "Wing's Cove."John met his wife in Sandwich. It was a marriage in meeting at Spring Hill and is entered in due form "in meeting on ye 23d of ye month." The papers for the marriage settlement were drawn by Stephen Skiffe, Esquire, of Sandwich. John improved his patrimony on Great Hill, and lived upon it for some forty years, or until his death in 1750. Today, the scene of his former home at Great Hill is somber and deserted, and his lands grown up with second growth timber.John and Experience Gifford Wing were blessed with 8 children;Benjamin, born May 14, 1711Daniel, born Oct. 31, 1715John, born Nov. 11, 1717Deborah, born Dec. 17, 1719Dinah, born Feb. 2, 1722Experience, born April 2, 1725Hannah, born Oct. 21, 1726Jabez, born Oct. 12, 1728
DANIEL WINGDaniel Wing, the 2nd child of John Wing and Experience Gifford was born in Rochester, Mass., on Oct 31, 1715. His exact date of death is unknown at this time but it was after 1759. The Plymouth County Records show that Daniel Wing of Rochester married Mary Clifton of Rochester on Nov. 26, 1740. She probably died within a few years after their marriage and there is no record of any children born of this marriage.According to Dartmouth records, Daniel married Rebecca Gifford on Dec. 21, 1746 and after her death he married Meribah Gifford. It is the present belief that after Daniel disposed of his lands in Rochester in 1657 he removed for a time to Dartmouth, where the parents of his wife lived and from Dartmouth he removed to Smithfield, Rhode Island and settled for a short time in the neighborhood of his brother Jabez.Daniel Wing and his 2nd wife, Rebecca Gifford Wing had 4 children;David, born Nov. 21, 1748Mary, born Aug. 20, 1752Benjamin, born Jan. 12, 1756Daniel, born July 2, 1757
DAVID WINGDavid Wing of Providence, Rhode Island. Son of Daniel Wing and Rebecca Gifford Wing. David was born in Rochester, Mass., on Nov. 21, 1748. David removed with his parents to Smithfield, Rhode Island, in the near vicinity of Providence and it is stated that his eldest son, Israel, was born in Providence in 1785. According to "New York in the Revolution", pp. 130, 132, David served in the "Cambridge Regiment" the 16th New York Miltia, living at that time in the neighborhood of Cambridge. The wife of David Wing was Dorcas Burdick.David Wing and Dorcas Burdick had 8 children;Israel, born March 9, 1785DavidWilliam, born Hoosic, New York, May 31, 1793GeorgeDorcasHannahAnnaSmith
WILLIAM WINGWilliam Wing, who was born May 31, 1793 in Hoosic, New York and died Oct. 1, 1842, married Miriam Moseley, who was also born at Hoosic, New York on Feb. 17, 1793. William and Miriam were married about the year of 1814. They lived in Hoosic until about 1819 when they removed to Otsilic, Cattaraugus County, New York. While living at Hoosic, William was a member of the Baptist Church. He was a quiet man, but also very firm and fearless, trustful in his business habits, and through that trustfulness lost his lands because of the treachery of a partner in business. William died suddenly of an epileptic fit in 1842.William and Miriam Moseley Wing had 9 children;Fiedelia, born March 19, 1815Filena, born Nov. 1, 1816William H., born Oct. 4, 1818Abram, born March 14, 1820Abram K., born March 29, 1822Sarah A., born June 27, 1824David M., born May 31, 1827Harvey Smith, born Sept 12, 1830Mary A., born Nov. 8, 1832(Additional notes on William Wing & Miriam Moseley Wing from Harriet Jones of Pennsylvania....William and Miriam settled in Hinsdale around 1835. Ella died at an early age leaving George with four young children, ranging in age from 17 to 8 years of age. He moved with the children to Cleveland, Ohio and lived there until his death. He and Ella are buried in the Cuba, New York Cemetery. My brother, Harry W. Wing Jr., remembers him from his childhood as a gentle man who took him to the woods in search of dandelion greens. My mother described him as having a wonderful way with growing things.George David Wing and Ella Viola Wilson Wing had 5 children;Clarence George, born July 25, 1891Harry Wilson, born Feb. 25, 1893Lucy, born Nov. 22, 1894Nellie, born Feb., 1897...died in infancy.Clara Olive, born Nov. 4, 1900
HARRY WILSON WINGHarry Wilson Wing, son of George David Wing and Ella Viola Wilson Wing was born Feb. 25, 1893 in Cuba, New York. His date of death was May 24, 1986. He married Eva Elvira Nelson on May 22, 1919.A story my father loved to tell of his early days in Cuba was of a time when he and his father went into the town on a Saturday to see Teddy Roosevelt as he passed through campaigning for Govenor of New York. My father heard a speech from the platform of the campaign train and quoted T. Roosevelt as saying with raised, clenched fist, "We'll fight 'em, we'll fight 'em and we'll beat 'em !!"The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio sometime after his mother's death in 1908. He joined the Army in 1917 and went to Waco, Texas for training. He told stories of Mexican border charges in pursuit of Poncha Villa. Another of his favorite stories was describing the drama of a cavalry charge with swords flashing during an inspection of the troops. He became a Lieutenant in the U. S Army Signal Corps during World War 1 and served in France. On May 22, 1919, Harry W. Wing and Eva E. Nelson were married.
