JOHN HACKNEY was born about 1765 and died January 10, 1843 in Russell Co. VA. He was in the Revolutionary War, serving from 1778 to the end of the war. If his birth date were to be correct he would have been about thirteen years old.

He fought in the southern campaign, a Private and Fifer in Captains John Rhodes and Peter Jaquett's companies. He was in Colonels David Hall's and Joseph Vaughan's regiment of the Delaware Blues. In two battles of Cowpens, Gilford Court House and Eutaw Springs and at the siege of Ninety Six.

John was at Valley Forge during 1778, according to his pay roll records he was "Sick at Valey Forge" from June 1778 until Oct. 1778 when he returned from the hospital.

John married May 16, 1786 in New Castle DE to Jane VAIL who was born in DE 1768 and she died in 1855 Russell Co. VA. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Vail who died in DE. Vol. F1 Orphans Court Pg 87 Reel 1016-17 mentions Jane as a minor daughter at the time.

Wythe Co. was formed in 1789 from Montgomery and Grayson Counties VA and John was appointed constable of Wythe Co. Jan. 9, 1798. Residents of Wythe and Russell Co. (John Hackney included) signed a petition to form Tazewell Co. in 1798.

John and Jane bought 250 acres of land in Tazewell Co. VA Oct. 5, 1801 and sold one hundred and fifty acres of it November 12, 1801. In the 1802 Tazewell Land Tax, John Hackney was taxed for Three Hundred and eight acres. In 1804 he was taxed on the waters of Bluestone, Tazewell. He bought property in Russell Co. on the Clinch River, July 26, 1803.

They lived the remainder of their lives in Russell Co. They had nine known children:

9. Nancy ab1810 -after 1850 m-1824 Pike Co. Ky to Elias Adkins.

The family is found in the Russell Co. Census 1810-1840. In 1850 Jane age 83 is a widow and her daughter "Polly" age 62 is shown with her.

JANE HACKNEY (daughter of John & Jane) was b-1794 d-1870-80 Buchanan Co. VA. m-3/8/1812 Giles Co. Va to David Anderson, (son of John and Nancy VAIL #1Ahl). He was born 1794 in Montgomery Co. VA d-1850-60 Tazewell Co? VA. They had eight known children:
