Action Alert! - National - Life Issue - Born-Alive Infants Protection Act: On July 26 the House Judiciary Committee reported out of committee a new bill, H.R. 4292, the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, by a vote of 22-1. This bill would codify into federal law the long-established legal principle that a baby that is born alive is a “person” under the law. Under the bill, a “person” includes “every infant member of the species homo sapiens who is born alive at any stage of development.” A baby is “born alive” under the bill if the baby is completely expelled from its mother and breathes, has a heartbeat, or has muscle movement. The National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) has already issued a statement attacking the bill, saying that it would “effectively grant legal personhood to a pre-viable fetus – in direct conflict with Roe [v. Wade].” But nothing in Roe v. Wade supports the proposition that a baby that is entirely expelled from the mother alive is a non-person, just because someone believes that the baby is “non-viable.” The bill may come to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote in September. Action Alert! - Global/National - Life -  Mexico City Policy: A major pro-life victory in 1999 was the enactment of the compromise Mexico City policy. Under this legislation, 96% of the federal population-control funding could not be used to fund a private organization that either performs abortions or lobbies to legalize abortion overseas. However, under the compromise, some U.S. dollars (up to $15 million) could be used to do so, if the President so chose. As you can imagine, the pro-abortion lobby was incensed when they learned of this agreement in 1999. We expect a major effort by the pro-abortion lobby and the Clinton-Gore administration to prevent this from happening again in September.

 Action Alert! - National - Pain Relief Promotion Act: The Pain Relief Promotion Act (H.R. 2260) would prevent the use of federally-controlled drugs for assisted suicide while promoting effective pain relief. It passed the House of Representatives on October 27, 1999 with 271 votes. We hope to see the Senate vote on the bill in September.

 Action Alert! - National - Sen. Specter’s embryo killing bill: Every year since 1996, the Congress has enacted the Dickey-Wicker prohibition on federal funding of experimentation on living human embryos. Then in 1999, the Clinton administration took a novel legal interpretation of the Dickey-Wicker language and said that it would allow the funding of embryonic stem-cell research, despite the fact that living human embryos are killed in order to derive the stem cells used for such research. Christian Coalition strongly opposes this misconstruction of the Dickey-Wicker language.   But Senator Specter wants to go even further. He has introduced S. 2015 which authorizes the federal government to fund the killing of living human embryos. If S. 2015 were to become law, it would be the first time ever that the Federal Government authorized the killing of living human beings for research purposes.

 Action Alert! - National - Parental Right to Sue Over Obscenity:  Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) has introduced new legislation that would give parents the right to sue the distributors of obscene material if their minor child is injured due to exposure to the obscene material. Frustrated with the lack of enforcement by the U.S. Department of Justice, Rep. Hunter introduced H.R. 5045, the Parents’ Empowerment Act, to arm parents with the means to take action against those who sell or distribute material
that is harmful to a minor. 
* ACTION ITEM:  Please take this opportunity during the August recess to educate your Congressman [ Contact your Senators ] about the need for H.R. 5045, the Parents’ Empowerment Act, and encourage him/her to cosponsor this needed legislation. [Christian Coalition]

 Action Alert! - National - Marriage Tax Penalty Relief: On July 5, President Clinton vetoed the Marriage Tax Penalty Relief Act. But the Congress has not given up. Shortly after they return from the August recess, the House of Representatives will try to override the President’s veto. 
* ACTION ITEM:  Please contact your Congressman [ Contact your Senators ]  and urge him or her to “please help provide needed tax relief to tens of millions of married taxpayers by voting to override the President’s veto of the Marriage Tax Penalty Relief Act.” [Christian Coalition]

 Action Alert! - National - Internet Gambling: Soon after the House of Representatives returns from the August recess, the House of Representatives is expected to vote again on the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act (H.R. 3125). We must get this legislation enacted into law before the state lotteries and major casinos become active on the Internet. 
* ACTION ITEM:  Maryland Representatives Cummings, Hoyer, and Wynn [ Contact your Senators ] voted against the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act when it came to the House floor on July 16 under an expedited procedure. If any of these are your Representative, please contact him/her during the August recess and urge them to please reconsider his/her earlier vote and to vote in favor of  H.R. 3125, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act.  Action Alert! - National - Speech suppression by gay-rights league - Gay-rights advocates are infuriated by Dr.Laura's religious convictions against homosexuality. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is leading the campaign to get Dr. Laura off the airwaves and prevent the debut of her hour-long television show in September.  Procter & Gamble, United Airlines, and Levi Strauss  recently pulled their advertising from the Paramount Pictures-produced show.  Gateway computers has recently joined the fray.  GLAAD's executive director said, "If she can’t be controlled, she must be stopped." To view  the gay and lesbian movement's hypocracy when it comes to free speech and tolerance see their boycott site www.stopdrlaura.com .  Dr. Laura needs your help to stay on the air.  Public figure by public figure, the gay and lesbian movement will use this ploy to shut off all on-air dissent of their chosen perverse behavior [no study supports the gay gene theory].  We cannot let this happen!

Repeat Action Alert! - Maryland - Abstinence Program Abuse - [Contributed by FCCC] Maryland is receiving $525,000 in federal funds annually over a 5 year period to support abstinence-only programs.  This money is being misspent, you could say diverted, outside the school system.

Repeat Action Alert! - National -  McDonald's Support Gay Rights- The hamburger conglomerate McDonald's has "clarified" its Zero Tolerance Policy for Discrimination and Harassment policy.  The policy now states that it will not discriminate in their hiring or employment practices on the basis or face, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, veteran status and sexual orientation.   Their spokewoman writes that "McDonald's does not discriminate against anyone for any reason.  Read that "any reason."  If someone steals from them, they won't discriminate?  If someone comes to work naked or exposes their bodies to customers, they won't discriminate?  If someone speaks openly of torturing animals, they won't discriminate?  The truth is they do discriminate on behavior.  Every organization must.  Its just that political correctness has driven them to protect those involved with or profess to be involved in perversion.  Anyone speaking against homosexuality would have to be in violation of their employment discrimination policy and would have to be levied some form of retribution.  This is not only reverse discrimination against those of faith.  This is a clear violation of free speech.   Though they state that 85% of McDonald's restaurants are owned and operated by independent business owners, they get their supplies and food from McDonald's Corporate.
* ACTION ITEM:   Boycott all McDonald's establishments until it removes sexual orientation from its anti-discrimination policies.  You and your family will probably feel better and  probably feel better and be healthier .
* ACTION ITEM:   Write the owners of your local McDonald's establishment and let them know, that as much as you and your family enjoy frequenting their establishments, you are morally obligated to boycott their establishment and that you will do your best to convince others to do the same.  Let them know the use of anti-discrimination clauses to protect the open advocacy of perverse behavior and to shut down open debate on the issue cannot be tolerated.  They can help themselves by putting pressure on Corporate McDonald's to remove "sexual orientation" from the Corporate McDonald's anti-discrimination policy.  [click here for a draft letter]
