Margie's curricula require the kind of deep-seated writing that has been shown in studies to help people heal.
James W. Pennebaker, Ph.D. at the University of Texas in Austin wrote about these landmark studies in his book,
Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions (Guilford Press, 1990). Specifically, Pennebaker showed
that when people wrote their deep thoughts and feelings about traumatic events, their heart rates slowed, their
bodies were better able to fight infection, and people felt a general sense of well-being. In short, linking deep
thoughts and feelings to events through writing is a healthy and creative activity.
The Healing Way, A Journal for Cancer Survivors by Margie Davis
(Element Books, 2000) is the first of its kind, structured journal
for cancer patients and survivors. This book elicits therapeutic writing
on over 60 well-researched writing topics. Margie has published articles
and essays in regional, national, international, and online magazines,
including aardvarkexpress.com, AboutHealth.com, Arts Around Boston,
Aruba Nights, Balance, Coping with Cancer, Entrepreneur's Business
Start-Ups, Family Issues, Mectronic Newsletter, Natural Living Today,
NovelAdvice, Oncology.com, The Outsider, Soundings, Tips, Today's
Caregiver, Transitions Abroad, and Tropi-Ties. She has been teaching
personal essay writing since 1993.
